Algae biomass as a co-substrate in methane digestion of sewage sludge
The article discusses problems related to intensification of anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. The authors have analysed the principal indicators of a methane digestion process, focusing mainly on biogas production. The most commonly used methods of sludge disintegration were reviewed. Additionally, the methods of algae biomass processing for biofuels and a methanogenic potential of the biomass were presented. The article presents the literature review to identify the possibilities of energy profit caused by using algae in anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge
Why do architects still draw (using computer)? Remarks on techniques coexistence
As a discipline, architecture constantly needs to take on new challenges. Currently, a significant share of them regards presenting architectural ideas in the face of the IT revolution. In this context, it is reasonable to return to the question of why architects (still) draw. What – especially now – really is architectural drawing? What is the array of its unique features like in comparison with computer techniques? What is the unique potential of the latter, and is there a choice between them or are theymutually exclusive? One of the provided answers is to indicate a need for a critical analysis of the methods to present design ideas, regardless of the means used
Analysis of the 15th- and 16th-century building development of the western suburbs of Cracow as an example of research into the lost architecture of the town
In this article an attempt has been made to answer the question to what extent the use of exclusively traditional, archival research methods enables us to determine typical town-planning and architectural features of the 15th- and 16th-century residential development of the western suburbs of Cracow, including the iuridica of Garbary. After developing that historically valuable area, forming today a part of the city centre (Śródmieście) marked by Łobzowska, Dunajewskiego, Podwale, Jabłonowskich, Piłsudskiego streets and Mickiewicza i Słowackiego avenues, no material traces have remained – the old city suburbs were completely destroyed in the times of the Swedish invasion, the written sources have proved to be meagre, no iconographic sources exist, while the urban residential development erected in place of iuridica in the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries does not allow us to conduct extensive archaeological research
Basic principles and theorems of dimensional analysis and the theory of model similarity of physical phenomena
The paper concerns dimensional analysis and the theory of model similarity of physical phenomena. At the beginning of the considerations, basic notions, definitions, relationships and fundamental principles of the issues to be analysed has been presented. Next, Buckingham’s Π-theorem of dimensional analysis and theory of similarity as well as authorial generalized theorems Π of this field of interest have been derived. A separate chapter has been devoted to the problem of the nature of physical phenomena occurring in the mechanics of continuous or discrete material mediums. At the end of the paper, an example of the determination of similarity numbers in the case of a system with one degree of freedom at mechanical and kinematic excitation have been given

Modelling of a permanent magnet electrical machine with stator core anisotropy
This article deals with the methodological aspects of the modelling and field analysis of machines with surface mounted permanent magnets on the rotor, taking into account the anisotropic properties of the stator core. These considerations are intended to show the effect of anisotropy on the structure of the mathematical model of the machine and answer the question of whether if based on classical modelling, it is possible to take into account the rotational magnetization phenomena. The results explain the question, how the magnetic anisotropy effect at rotational magnetization is important from an exploitation point of view
The use of linear guides to move HEAVY loads
The paper presents results of laboratory tests of linear guides in the application to move heavy loads. The first phase of the work included construction of a test bench in the form of a steel frame running on profiled rails using HIWIN type blocks. Subsequently, investigations involving movement of the frame with various loads were performed. In each case a driving force of an operator was measured. Based on the obtained results, average values of the resistance to motion coefficients were estimated
Invisible buildings or a painter’s perspective on colour in architecture
My day-to-day observations made me reflect on whether the role of colour in architecture today is properly understood and whether it has not been pushed into the background. In this paper, I intend to show that painting classes in architectural schools aim at filling a certain gap. Using multiple examples and selected tasks, I hope to demonstrate the inseparability of the colour from the form, the influence of an appropriately selected colour on the architectural shape and the importance of combining colours depending on the form, space and light, as well as the way such combinations effect the perception of the shape and colour itself. This last variable inevitably makes us realise the significance of the so-called local colour. To conclude, the understanding of space, form, colour and light begins with practising the skills of “seeing”
An analysis of magnetic gear performance
Continuous development of technology determines the search for new solutions in the field of electric machine design with improved electromechanical properties. In recent years, there has been an increased interest in passive and active magnetic gears. This paper presents the design, operation and performance analysis of the modified magnetic gear. The new prototype magnetic gear allows obtaining a ratio of 4:1 or 5:1. For the analyzed construction, two and three-dimensional numerical models are developed for which the series of the magnetic field calculations are carried out . The characteristics of the magnetic torque vs. angle position of the inner rotor with respect to the intermediate ring (modulation ring) and the outer rotor are determined and compared. The examples of flux density distributions for the analyzed converter construction are presented. The calculation results are verified with measurements on the prototype
