Distinguished graduates in mathematics of Jagiellonian University in the interwar period. Part II: 1926‒1939

    Get PDF
In this study, we continue presenting profiles of some distinguished graduates in mathematics of the Jagiellonian University. We consider the years 1926‒1939, after the ministerial reform which allowed the students to graduate with a master’s degree. We also give a list of master’s theses in mathematics

The application of photovoltaic cells as an alternative power supply for small HVAC systems

    Get PDF
his paper presents selected aspects of an alternative power supply for small HVAC systems. The application of a system based on photovoltaic cells together with energy accumulation in VRLA gel batteries was analysed. The results were obtained using laboratory installation and were compared with the predicted data

Analysis of water intake screen’s performance under various conditions

    Get PDF
The article presents the problem of ichthyofauna protection in aquatic ecosystems. One of the possible solutions to protect the fish and fry in the water intakes is the use of properly designed water intake screens. The article presents the results of numerical calculations performed in Autodesk Simulation CFD software considering the performance of water intake screen under various conditions

Optimization of system parameters controlling electric furnace temperature using genetic algorithms

    Get PDF
The optimization of the parameters of the electric furnace temperature control was considered. The optimization was executed using genetic algorithms. The model takes into account nonlinearity, which is connected with the penetration of heat. Also, it is connected with losses of heat due to convection and radiation. The genetic algorithm determines the selection of parameters of the mathematical model in which the system accurately reproduces the input action

Drawing as a lesson from the built heritage

    Get PDF
The notion of drawing skills that an architect shall be equipped with has several aspects. First of all, drawing can be used as an instrument for learning the principles of defining space, its scale, composition and architectural detail. Sketches and studies of existing buildings help an architect understand the way they were assembled. These drawings represent, therefore, a compulsory phase in building up one’s skills as an architect. Such is the goal of the outdoor drawing, considered as an important teaching method since the 17th century, when the French king Louis XIV founded the Prix de Rome. This drawing scholarship has endured till the 20th century and is still being imitated in other lands, giving students a possibility to gain knowledge directly from the greatest works of architecture

The city ‒ a political (non) idea and a politicides structure

    Get PDF
This article strives to give a polemical response to the theses occurring in contemporary Polish publications on the theory of urbanism. The presented text emerged from the clash between the visions, theses and opinions presented in the aforementioned publications and the vision of the city that has been absorbed and assimilated by the author from his distinguished professors of the Institute of City and Regional Planning of the Faculty of Architecture at Cracow University of Technology. The author focuses on addressing the thesis that “the city is a political idea”. On the basis of some examples the author demonstrates in the text that the city is not a political idea, but a structure within which politics is made

The influence of changes in the city infrastructure on the type of parks illustrated by the Szczytnicki park in Wrocław

The paper is an continuation of author’s reflections about the historical parks in Wrocław, which beauty is in danger of loss due to man’s activities. The focus of the paper is on the very controversial issue of recent years – building the inner city ring road in Wrocław. The planned location of the ring road crosses Szczytnicki Park – one of the oldest historical parks in the city. The project included the location of a four-lane street on the edge of the park and crossing far coherent historical urban complex (the components of this complex are remarkable modernistic building such as: UNESCO WHO Heritage site – Centennial Hall, Zoological Garden, WUWA Exhibition Area, Olimpic Stadium and housing estates Sępolno and Biskupin) generates multifaceted social conflicts

Public space playing with street art

    Get PDF
Street art is a particular kind of art, not only because of its spatial context, but also due to its ability to redefine the character of a place. The artistic actions related to street art influence the reception and form and function of a space. This article discusses the image, sculpture and performance as fields of a kind of game between the artist and recipient in the public space

How to study mathematics – the manual for Warsaw University 1st year students in the interwar period

    Get PDF
In 1926 and in 1930, members of Mathematics and Physics Students’ Club of the Warsaw University published the guidance for the first year students. These texts would help the freshers in constraction of the plans and course of theirs studies in the situation of so called “free study”

La narrativité picturale dans la BD algérienne francophone

    Get PDF
Our statement aims to see how it is possible to express oneself in images and the process used to build a dynamic intrigue in a narrative in order to ensure an easily comprehensible narrative line. For that, we will first try to expose the multiple techniques used by the cartoonists while illustrating our statement by excerpts extracted from the corpus in study. We will also discuss the type of narrative and also reveal the coexistence of comic and realistic narrative in most cartoon albums where the “dramatization” of the narrative has often resorted to dramatic turns, mystery or suspense. The reality is often trivialized or sublimated in the same objective, which is to go more or less beyond the real, thus competing with the traditional dramatic author, with the drawing in less
