Intercultural competencies in the opinion of managers from the Podlasie region
No full textThe increasing size, complexity, and geographical reach of global firms continually raise the bar for effective culturally diverse workgroup performance. Culturally diverse teams provide the opportunity for a greater number of cross cultural interactions and present a number of benefits for teams including increasing innovation, creativity and problem solving capabilities. For managing cultural diversity intercultural competencies, such as dissimilarity openness, emotion management skills, intercultural communication competence, tolerance for ambiguity, cultural understanding, information processing skills and cultural management skills are required. Many companies which are situated in the Podlaskie voievodship (Eastern-North part of Poland), cooperate with Belorussian, Russian and Lithuanian firms. To be successful they need to develop intercultural competencies. In this paper the result of pilot research dedicated to those competencies conducted between young managers working in local companies are presented. They show how they assess the companies' and their own intercultural competencies
Building Information Modelling: an Innovative Way to Manage Risk in Construction Projects

Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been recently one of the most common issues discussed in publications related to innovative changes in the management of construction projects. The concept of BIM integrates all the activities related to the design, construction and operation into the ICT model developed and implemented within a communication platform. From the point of view of the project management theory and construction practice, the area of interest is integrated risk and change management based on BIM. Negative consequences such as delays and financial losses that are detrimental especially to public projects conducted by investors raise a question of whether and how implementation of principles of BIM in project management can improve management activities associated with risk in construction projects. Research aims. This paper aims to gain insight into the current state of knowledge about risk and change management in construction projects in terms of BIM implementation, and to set the direction for further research as well as to determine further research objectives related to this issue.Methodology. The arguments presented in this paper are based on the analysis of reference literature. Key findings: Risk is an issue in the concept of BIM that still needs to be systematized. It is necessary to develop an optimal way to integrate procedures, methods and techniques of risk management with other management actions within BIM. Change is perceived as one of the major risk factors and therefore the inclusion of change management processes into this system also requires the establishment of standards and methodical approach within BIM. Further research in this area should include past experience in the implementation of BIM in construction projects, the presence of risk-related procedures in this process and conditions of effective integration of management actions. From a practical point of view, it is also necessary to explore the willingness of entrepreneurs and investors to implement BIM, understood as a platform for communication, risk and change management as well as an optimal method for a systematized implementation of this process
Benchmarking for Public Hospital Management – Research Findings
Get PDFBackground. Benchmarking is a conceptual framework of effective management policy that allows for organisational improvements. It has been successfully implemented in enterprises and is more and more often applied at public institutions, including health care institutions. Research aims. The aim of this article is to present to what extent benchmarking may be applied at public hospitals. Methodology. The survey method and the research instrument in the form of an individually prepared and customized questionnaire was used. The research was carried out among the management boards of 35 public hospitals in the Lubelskie voivodeship, which constitutes 90% of the statistical population. The financial standing of the entity in the studied group served the purpose of an additional characteristic piece of information. Key findings. The research findings have allowed to determine how many hospitals in the studied voivodeship use benchmarking, what is the dominant type, in what areas it is implemented and how frequently the healthcare facilities use benchmarking to improve activities of a given organization. The most frequently used types of benchmarking in public hospitals have been distinguished as: internal and competitive benchmarking. The main motivations to implement this conceptual framework in healthcare facilities are connected with both qualitative and economic aspects
The Influence of Flexible Employment on the Commitment of Workers – the Employer Perspective
No full textThis article is about commitment of flexible workers. It is based on our own question-naire investigation. The research took place in February and March 2011. It was carried out among 36 organizations which function in the area of the Silesia voivodeship. Four hypothe-sis were verified. First: “workers doing work within flexible forms of employment show smaller commitment then stable workers”; second: “organizations tie the a smaller weight to the commitment of flexible workers than stable workers”; third: “the form of employment exerts the influence on the level of the workers commitment”; fourth: “employment stability is the important factor supporting the commitment of the workers”. On the basis of the answers collected, we can affirm that at the studied organizations flexible workers commitment is as important as stable workers commitment. Respondents perceive the positive relationship between the period of work and the commitment level, and also attribute the various level of commitment to the different elastic forms of employment

Get PDFThe recent amendments to the Civil Code of the Republic of Poland regarding the liability of a seller for the lack of conformity of delivered goods with the contract of sale will have a significant impact on the art market. Until recently the Code provided for a distinction between the seller’s liability in the case of a consumer (liability for lack of conformity of goods) and liability in other types of sales (“rękojmia”- warranty). As a consequence of the recent amendments to the Polish Civil Code both types of liability have now been amalgamated. Currently, the seller’s liability is based on the concept of warranties and conditions, which makes a significant difference, particularly in the case of the sale of forged artworks or antiquities. Surprisingly, new amendments to the Civil Code and to the Antiquities Protection and Care Act aimed at combating art theft have led to unexpected results, depriving many buyers of stolen works of their right to rescind the contract and to claim money back
Death and dying in mass media aspects
Get PDFWe live in times when the mystery of human’s death and life becomes a big, almost every day’s subject to present means of social communication. The private observation of a media report shows us that this is a matter which is worth describing and discussing as it meets with great resonance on receivers not only due to writing it in periodization human’s development as a final stage but also due to prism of the issue’s commercialization. Each situation is a good opportunity to make the receiver associated with the subject matter. However, the way of its presentation makes a lot of objections in many scientific environments. The subject to death is given very rarely in mass media deepen by philosophical-religious reflection which is so important to proper human’s development. It is rather presented in violence images, murders, catastrophes, wars, conflicts or lately numerous terroristic attacks, which on the one hand arouses fear, on the other hand because of high mass media frequency makes the receiver accustomed to the view of death. And it leads to the receiver’s becoming indifferent. The man starts living as if death would be around him and using defense mechanisms tries to protect himself against accepting still painful for him truth about its finiteness and transience. Meanwhile, death is written in human’s existence independently of his worldview

Example of Estonia and PolandThe social media are more and more important in creating the strategy for conventional media development. The aim of this article is to demonstrate how social media as Internet tools can diversify access to media and affect on the dynamics of dialogue with readers. Discovering the specifics of the Internet communication via social media becomes important. The article contains the characteristics of leading national dailies in Estonia and Poland and description their Facebook profiles. The authoress has examined the number of entries, likes and news sharing on dailies official Facebook profiles in the first two weeks of April 2015 (1.04.2015–15.04.2015). The results of the analysis are far from optimistic. The official dailies profiles available on Facebook are not a represent significant platform for dialogue. There are not effective for maintaining relationships between customers and newspapers. Maintaining a Facebook account in many cases seems to be only a necessity. In most cases it is not a complementing channel of communication between traditional press and readers. Only a few media publishers can lead account on Facebook in effective way
On theoretical and practical aspects of resistance system of the company

One of the fields within which academics look for solutions is nature. The mechanism behind immunology system could also bring some stimulants for managers’ thinking. The response towards a disturbance factor of the immune system is an inspiration for identifying a resistance system of the company. From the methodological point of view, the system approach constitutes a framework for building comparisons between two different research areas, respectively – immunology and the company. The external barriers subsystem, the non-specific defence subsystem, the fuzzy specificity subsystem and the target-oriented (specific) defence subsystem constitute the resistance system of the company.
