Perception of work environment among women and men – workload and autonomy in relation to job engagement

    Get PDF
This article refers to the phenomenon of employee engagement as one of the key aspects of contemporary human resources management. The concept of professional engagement is a multi-dimensional approach relating to the positively understood effects of work, welfare of on employee, and optimization of the organization and its environment. Job engagement is believed to be strongly related to such processes as introduction of change in organizations, quality and performance issues, customer satisfaction or health, and effectiveness of people and organizations. Following the widely recognized in occupational health psychology model of Karasek (1979) and its further expansions, the authors of this article look upon work engagement as a subjective, psychological state of employees that emerges in certain circumstances, namely a “healthy” work environment. Following Kara-sek’s thinking it was hypothesised that perception of managable workload and sufficient autonomy will lead to the most required effects, such as higher levels of job engagement and its positive consequences. Thus, the specific purpose of this article is to investigate the way employees perceive their work environment in terms of workload and job autonomy in relation to job engagement. The empirical research was conducted from the perspective of the analysis of professional activity depending on the gender of respondents, limitations of social roles and the situation of women in Poland. The authors of the article conducted a questionnaire survey on a sample of 748 economically active persons, both women and men. The analyses showed statistically significantly higher levels of all three examined dimensions of job engagement (i.e. absorption, dedication, vigour) in women compared to men, together with a lower level of control (professional autonomy) declared by women. Control was a clear predictor of work engagement, to a similar extent in both men and women. In contrast, the relationship of workload with absorption, dedication and vigour proved to be variable and dependent on gender

Odpowiedź na list Dr. Pawła E. Tomaszewskiego na temat badań życiorysu Jana Czochralskiego

    Get PDF
The author replies to the letter of Dr. Paweł E. Tomaszewski, which is a subsequent (third) stage of the controversy regarding the facts of life of Jan Czochralski and the differences in the way they are presented by an amateur researcher and a professional historian. The source of the controversy is the biography Powrót. Rzecz o Janie Czochralskim (2012), the English edition: Jan Czochralski restored (2013).In the opinion of the author, a professional historian of science may have some reservations regarding the sometimes too popular a style of the publications of Dr. Tomaszewski. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that so far this amateur [i.e. enthusiast] of historical research has done much more regarding the biography and achievements of Jan Czochralski than professional historians and historians of science. This reply concludes the exchange of polemics. Rzecz o Janie Czochralskim (2012), edycja angielska: Jan Czochralski restored (2013).Zdaniem Autora, profesjonalny historyk nauki może mieć pewne zastrzeżenia wobec czasami zbyt popularnego stylu publikacji dr. Tomaszewskiego. Nie ulega jedna żadnej wątpliwości, że jak dotąd to właśnie ten Amator [tj. miłośnik, entuzjasta] badań historycznych dokonał znacznie więcej na polu badań biografii i dokonań Jana Czochralskiego niż profesjonalni historycy i historycy nauki.Odpowiedź ta kończy polemikę

O znanych i mniej znanych relacjach Leonharda Eulera z Polską

    Get PDF
In this work we focus on research contacts of Leonhard Euler with Polish scientists of his era, mainly with those from the city of Gdańsk (then Gedanum, Danzig). L. Euler was the most prolific mathematician of all times, the most outstanding mathematician of the 18th century, and one of the best ever. The complete edition of his manuscripts is still in process (Kleinert 2015; Kleinert, Mattmüller 2007).Euler’s contacts with French, German, Russian, and Swiss scientists have been widely known, while relations with Poland, then one of the largest European countries, are still in oblivion. Euler visited Poland only once, in June of 1766, on his way back from Berlin to St. Petersburg. He was hosted for ten days in Warsaw by Stanisław II August Poniatowski, the last king of Poland. Many Polish scientists were introduced to Euler, not only from mathematical circles, but also astronomers and geographers. The correspondence of Euler with Gdańsk scientists and officials, including Carl L. Ehler, Heinrich Kühn and Nathanael M. von Wolf, originated already in the mid-1730s. We highlight the relations of L. Euler with H. Kühn, a professor of mathematics at the Danzig Academic Gymnasium and arguably the best Polish mathematician of his era. It was H. Kühn from whom Euler learned about the Königsberg Bridge Problem; hence one can argue that the beginning of the graph theory and topology of the plane originated in Gdańsk. In addition, H. Kühn was the first mathematician who proposed a geometric interpretation of complex numbers, the theme very much appreciated by Euler.Findings included in this paper are either unknown or little known to a general mathematical community.W tej pracy skupiamy się na kontaktach badawczych Leonharda Eulera z polskimi naukowcami jego epoki, głównie z Gdańska (wtedy Gedanum, Danzig).

A study of the composition of cement mortar lining in water and sewage pipelines

    Get PDF
Cementation of iron water and sewage pipes is a standard procedure that is used to ensure internal protection against corrosion. In order to reduce leaching of chemical elements from coating to water, the neutral impact of cement coating on the water is of major importance. In the present study, the elemental composition of the cement mortar lining, taken from the new cast iron pipes with a diameter of 100 and 150 mm, has been investigated. A reference sample was made from Portland cement. Studies using scanning electron microscopy revealed an increased contents of titanium in the sewage pipes coating and also aluminum and alkali in water pipe coatings

    Dispersion Kinetics Modelling

Stirred tanks for dispersion, the pre-dispersion of two immiscible liquids or particulate solidliquid suspension are extensively used in the chemical, food, pharmaceutical and metallurgical industries, for purposes such as suspension/emulsion polymerisation, heterogeneous/phase-transfer catalytic chemical reactions, paint production and hydrometallurgical solvent extraction. The aim of this paper is to propose the simple dispersion model enabling the prediction of particle size changes over time and taking into account the type of breakup mechanisms, the non-homogeneity of local turbulent energy dissipation rate in an agitated vessel and the effect of the number of times the liquid passes through the impeller and the impeller zone. The model was successfully tested on data published by Ditl et al. (1981)
