Get PDFIn the last 25 years, polemics about Constantin Noica multiplied. For a significant part of the Romanian intellectual élite, he is an exceptional philosopher, maybe the most representative of the Romanian culture in the 20th century. For a little one, his work and his activity represent the “embodiment” of all the critical problems of Romanian culture in the last century. A few scholars criticize philosopher’s ideological options, toward authoritarianism and totalitarianism. In my paper, I present an intellectual profile of the philosopher by revisiting his ontology. I strongly agree with Ion Ianoşi, who stressed that the philosophy of Noica is mainly based on the traditionalism. From this perspective of interpretation, Noica remains a controversial author, but reveals himself as one of the most consistent Romanian philosopher from the last century, who preserved his views till the end of his life

About the individuality of “too rhythmic” poetry (Jagiellonian University, Cracow 2015), which on the one hand is the literary theoretical versological manifesto, and on the other hand – the original proposal how to read three texts: Comments on death inevitable and common to all expressed in poems by Jozef Baka (1766), Ball in Opera by Julian Tuwim (1946) and Nothing twice by Wislawa Szymborska (1957). An original concept to transfer into the field of versification the category of individuality poetry by Derek Attridge, becomes here a contribution to the critical reflection on the history and condition of contemporary Polish theory of verse, which is entering the culturally oriented post-structural stage, as well as on the potential poetological practice centred around interpretation of the specific poetical cases.

The formal framework that we propose clarifies the structure of the most popular propagation models and helps rigorously re-establish the essential results concerning the problem of influence maximisation. We also introduce new models of propagation and show how they fit into the general picture. In particular, we focus on models that capture either positive or negative effects of resisting influence on individual’s future resistance

Get PDFThis essay examines the rhetoric and practice of translation in the Russian Empire’s Hebrew and Yiddish cultural communities and focuses on the intriguing fact that by 1917, many of the writers, critics, intellectuals, and publishers committed to a Jewish nationalist vision of Hebrew or Yiddish cultural renaissance were convinced that a massive program of literary translation was their most essential task. The study reconstructs the guiding translation program of this divided intelligentsia, which posited a universal canon of European and even world literature that had to be incorporated whole into Hebrew and Yiddish literature systematically and rapidly, without any sort of Judaization or popularization, and with an emphasis on the expansion of the expressive capacities of the target language and its writers. The essay traces how this commitment was expressed and embodied in translation theory, practices of selection and publishing, and in several acts of translation themselves. It further demonstrates how this translation program and its practices were linked to a larger vision of programmatic ‘de-Judaization’ or ‘de-parochialization’ of Hebrew and Yiddish culture propounded by some of the most committed Hebraists and Yiddishists in Russia. Finally, it argues that this translation program expresses a more general and seemingly paradoxical variant of East European Jewish cultural nationalism which held that a modern Jewish national culture could only be truly worthwhile and compelling to modern creators and consumers if it was universal in its expressive potentials and demarcated from other national cultures by language rather than content
Labour migration and its impact on Ukraine’s economic development
Get PDFThe author analyses the phenomenon of labour migration in Ukraine and its impact on the country’s economic development. Its positive consequences include more foreign currency flowing into Ukraine due to the remittances from the labour immigrants, as well as opportunities for the working population to improve its financial situation. Among its negative effects are the reduction of the population of Ukraine and the instability of its social security system. Some recommendations to address the issues of labour migration are also provided, which include, i.a., job creation, a reduction of the shadow economy and a continuous analysis of the scale of illegal labour migration from Ukraine
Commodity price changes after 2000 and their effects on the economies of commodity-exporting African countries
Get PDFAfter 2000, unprecedented rises in commodity prices were recorded. Despite sharp declines in the second half of 2008, from the beginning of 2001 to mid-2011 prices of primary commodities more than tripled in value against the USD. The aim of the paper is to analyse the effects of commodity price changes after 2000 on the value of Africa’s exports and economic growth of commodityexporting African countries. Section 1 analyses the significance of primary commodities in African countries. Section 2 presents commodity price developments after 2000. Section 3 analyses relations between commodity price changes and changes in the value of Africa’s exports and economic growth of commodity-exporting African countries. The author uses mainly descriptive statistics as a method of analysis. The results of the analyses suggest that there is a strong shortterm relationship between commodity price changes and the value of Africa’s exports as well as between changes in commodity prices and changes in GDP in commodity-exporting African countries
Papposphaera heldalii sp. nov. (Haptophyta, Papposphaeraceae) from Svalbard
Get PDFIn an attempt to establish a taxonomy for the polar contingent of lightly calcified coccolithophores, we are currently dealing with species of Papposphaera. Here we describe a new species, Papposphaera heldalii sp. nov., based on material from Svalbard. The species is unique in terms of calyx design, which is an elegant modification of the standard P. sagittifera theme, and also in terms of the absence of central area calcification in body coccoliths. The species thus occupies a further step in a sequence of five Arctic forms ranging from P. sagittifera via P. sarion, P. arctica and P. iugifera to P. heldalii showing a gradual reduction of central area calcification in body coccoliths. P. heldalii is unique also in the sense that the species has not been found during any of the major Arctic TEM nanoplankton surveys conducted during the last decades

Get PDFTen new species of myxosporeans found from marine fishes were collected from coastal waters off the Yellow Sea in China: Sphaerospora sebasta sp. n. coelozoic in the gall bladder of Sebastes schlegeli, Ceratomyxa hemitriptera sp. n. coelozoic in the gall bladder of Hemitripterus villosus, Ceratomyxa kareus sp. n. coelozoic in the gall bladders of Kareius bicoloratus and Zebrias zebra, Ceratomyxa lateolabrax sp. n. and Ceratomyxa lomi sp. n. coelozoic in the gall bladder of Lateolabrax japonicus, Ceratomyxa qingdaoensis sp. n. coelozoic in the urinary bladder of Argyrosomus argentatus, Ceratomyxa saurida sp. n. coelozoic in the gall bladder of Saurida elongata, Ceratomyxa sebastisca sp. n. coelozoic in the gall bladder of Sebastiscus sp., Ceratomyxa simplex sp. n. coelozoic in the gall bladder of Chirolophis japonicus and Ceratomyxa triacantha sp. n. coelozoic in the gall bladder and bile of Triacanthus brevirostris. All those forms were described in a book chapter cited as “known forms” several years ago, but have never been formally established as new taxa which are thus officially reported here. The present contribution only provided the morphology and geographic distribution of these organisms
On the Enigmatic Hook of the Metaradiophryids (Alveolata, Ciliophora)
Get PDFThe astomatous metaradiophryids are ciliates which live endosymbiotically in earthworms (Annelida, Lumbricidae). Their prominent hook apparatus is demonstrated in detail in light micrographs of living organisms as well as in scanning electron micrographs of Parducz-fixed cells. Since it was first observed, this structure has been interpreted as a ‘holdfast’ organelle preventing ciliates from being expelled prematurely from the intestine of the worm along with its excrements. No active movement of the hook has been reported in earlier papers or in our recent studies. Nevertheless, a detailed description of different parts of the hook apparatus exists in older literature, including a hypothesis on how these elements interact with each other to function as a holdfast device – without any experimental evidence. The suspected mode of function of this structure is questioned and critically discussed
