Mobilising parental capital for integration: New immigrant parents' strategies to facilitate 1.5- and second-generation immigrant children's academic and socio-cultural integration in Singapore
This article explores how new immigrant parents in Singapore deploy social, cultural, and economic capitals as strategies to support their 1.5- and second-generation children’s academic and socio-cultural integration. Based on in-depth interviews with 64 new immigrant parents from mainland China, India, the Philippines, Indonesia, and a few non-Asian countries, we identified foremost the distinct strategies parents employed to facilitate their children’s academic integration. Non-Chinese parents predominantly rely on bridging social capital, forming connections with local parents to navigate Singapore’s education system. In contrast, Chinese parents draw on bonding social capital derived from co-national networks, leveraging digital platforms like WeChat to exchange education-related resources. Beyond academics, immigrant parents also actively mobilise a variety of capitals—economic, social, and cultural—to support their children’s socio-cultural integration, whilst striking a balance between local integration with maintenance of socio-cultural connections with their homeland.Accepted versionOER 09/20 YP
Machine learning-assisted benign transformation of three zinc states in zinc ion batteries
The applications of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are limited by challenges such as zinc dendrite formation and hydrogen evolution. However, the traditional trial-and-error approach to designing interface layer structures has proven to be both inefficient and costly. To address this issue, a fully connected neural network model has been developed to analyze the relationship between the structure and stability across 168 000 interface layer candidates. Leveraging the power of machine learning, a cerium-iron bimetallic metal–organic framework interface layer has been successfully designed. This layer contains ion-sieving channels, polar –CN organic ligands, and a zincophilic Ce cation, which play crucial roles in reducing the desolvation energy barrier for the conversion of Zn(H2O)n2+ to Zn2+. Coordination channels ensure selective ion transport and facilitate uniform Zn2+–Zn transformation, which prevents zinc dendrite formation. As a result, this continuous transformation among Zn(H2O)n2+, Zn2+, and Zn states leads to long-term stability. The MOF@Zn‖MOF@Zn configuration attains an impressive cycle life of over 4300 hours at 1 mA cm−2 (1 mA h cm−2). Furthermore, the MOF@Zn‖Cu configuration exhibits an average coulombic efficiency of 99.8% over 1400 cycles at 2 mA cm−2 (1 mA h cm−2). An instant update on stem cell therapy
Stem cell therapy, a cutting-edge technology, aims to replace damaged cells with healthy ones. Stem cells possess the remarkable ability to multiply and differentiate into various cell types, making them ideal candidates for regenerative medicine. This therapy holds promise for treating a wide range of conditions and injuries. In this review, I will delve into the historical context of stem cell research and therapy, provide updates on clinical trials for different conditions, address the challenges faced in stem cell therapy, and explore strategies to overcome these obstacles. Additionally, I will discuss the ethical and legal implications associated with stem cell therapy. A lesson plan for teaching the challenges and ethical issues of stem cell therapy is found at the end of the review
The historical evolution and context of teacher learning and professional development in Singapore
This chapter provides the historical context and development of the Singapore education system. It describes how efforts on teacher professional learning, particularly teachers as our pedagogical leaders, have evolved together with the different emphasis of our developmental phases as a system. The chapter focuses more on teachers’ professional learning in the Student-centred, Values-driven Education Phase (2011–2018) and the current Learn for Life Education Phase (2019–onwards) where teacher learning and professional development focuses on teachers’ career-long development and learning. The chapter also describes efforts to encourage teachers to take ownership of their professional learning and the professional partnerships forged in order to develop teachers along a lifelong professional development continuum
Conceptualizing the dimensions of organizational evaluation capacity in art museums: A framework for visitor studies
The open access publication is available at https://doi.org/10.1080/10645578.2025.2480500If art museums are to conduct visitor studies in a way that both supports their needs and strategic goals and demonstrates their effectiveness and public value in today’s accountability climate, possessing adequate capacity to do so is and will undoubtedly continue to be paramount. In the relevant literature to date, discourse on capacity related to the conduct of visitor studies in museums has primarily centered around defining, assessing, and building the evaluative competencies of visitor studies professionals and their non-evaluator counterparts at an individual level. While important, recent scholarship suggests that even when individuals’ capacities increase, varied institutional factors can still impede evaluation’s enculturation, pointing to a critical need to simultaneously develop evaluation capacity at the individual (micro) and organizational (meso) levels. Frameworks such as the Visitor Studies Association’s Evaluator Competencies for Professional Development provide useful schemas outlining what capacity entails at an individual level and how it might further be strengthened over time. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to reduce the foregoing gap by presenting a conceptual framework for both understanding and assessing organizational evaluation capacity in art museums. The conceptual framework was both informed by a scoping review of the existing literature base and empirically validated through a multiple-phase pan-Canadian study into organizational-level capacity in the art museum sector. Findings from the validation study suggest that an art museum’s overall capacity for evaluation can be described through six sub-divided and interrelated dimensions (i.e., context and culture, demand for evaluation, resources & supports, capacity to do evaluation, capacity to use evaluation, and research & evaluation activities) organized under two main categories (i.e., influencing factors & capacity indicators). The proposed framework is likely to be useful to the growing number of art museums seeking to integrate evaluative thinking and practices into their organizational cultures
Unidirectional diffusion synthesis of stabilized triphenylamine-based organic frameworks (cofs) composite membranes for dye separation
The synthesis of high-quality two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) under mild conditions is crucial for their wide scale industrial application. Therefore, the advancement of the unidirectional diffusion synthesis (UDS) method has garnered significant attention. A comprehensive understanding of the diffusion dynamic occurring between the two phases is vital for optimizing reaction times and enhancing the growth conditions of highly crystalline COF films. In this work, we employed the UDS method, explored through various characterization tests, to fabricate 2D COFs on commercial PAN ultrafiltration membranes. Our study shows that the COF layer forms on one side contacting with the organic phase, regardless of whether the front side of the PAN-based film is exposed to the aqueous or organic phase. Through the different reaction times, it was found that the 2-min treatment yielded the optimal performance, with a pure water permeability coefficient of approximately 98 L·m−2·h−1·bar−1, along with a retention rate of exceeding 95 % for both CR and AR 120. Furthermore, it surpassed the interfacial polymerization method in terms of both stability and retention capacity for EBF molecules with molecular weights under 500 g·mol−1
Understanding students’ perceptions of fairness in group work assessment: Key conditions and implications
Supporting fairness in the assessment of group work remains an ongoing challenge for instructors, particularly that students feel their individual contributions need to be evaluated equitably. This study draws on social psychology and critical theories to examine the conditions that shape students’ perceptions of fairness and associated tensions in group work assessments across three large UK universities. The results highlight that the majority of students were concerned with individual recognition in their evaluation of fairness in group work assessments. Students also suggested procedural and relational solutions to address their fairness concerns with respect to recognizing individual contributions, workload distribution, accountability, and conflict resolution. However, these solutions were mostly instructor-focused, devolving their agency in the process. While there were students that valued group work for developing communal learning and collaborative skills, perceptions of fairness were conditioned by the current state of affairs in individual rewarding and recognition within contemporary societies. The findings demonstrate that to address the tensions between individual learning and communal learning, values underpinning the assessment of group work needs rethinking.</p
