Health-related quality of life of children with developmental disabilities in Singapore and associated factors: A broad-based examination
The study investigates the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of elementary-aged children with developmental disabilities in Singapore, focusing on the influences of individual and family factors. Data from 113 students from special education schools was examined, with data collected from parents, teachers, and direct assessments of the children. The Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) was used to measure HRQoL across four domains: physical, emotional, social, and school functioning. Results showed that children with developmental disabilities generally experience lower HRQoL compared to typically developing peers, with the social functioning domain presenting the greatest challenges. Executive functioning difficulties emerged as the most significant predictor of overall HRQoL, affecting all domains, particularly social and school functioning. Parental psychological well-being was also significantly associated with children's emotional functioning, highlighting the broader influence of family factors on children’s well-being. This study contributes to the literature by examining a broad-based sample in a multicultural Asian context. Results underscores the importance of addressing both child-specific challenges, such as executive functioning, and family-centered interventions to improve parental mental wellbeing. In the pursuit of positive quality of life for children with developmental disabilities across multiple domains, this study’s findings highlight the need for a multi-component approach. Limitations and future directions, including the use of proxy reports and the need for culturally relevant interventions, are discussed.Accepted versionOER 18/01 K
Digital resistance against linguistic invisibility: Discursive positionings of resistance in the #PRO-Cantonese movement on Douyin
While there is a sizable body of scholarship on China’s social media and digital culture, including discourse-analytic studies, research into more contentious forms of discourse or how the internet and new technologies facilitate digital activism on the Chinese internet has remained sparse. This is especially true for newer types of platforms such as those built around short-form videos. This study takes the recent #Pro-Cantonese movement (PCM) on Douyin as a case study to investigate how users employ various technological and semiotic affordances to position themselves in response to the platform’s surveillance of Cantonese content. Using a critical multimodal approach, we analyzed 264 short videos under the hashtag #PCM posted between 1 September 2022 to 31 March 2023. Five distinct positions were identified within the PCM: radical activists, playful activists, positive energy patriots, rational experts, and cultural ambassadors. These results contribute to our understanding of the multi-faceted forms of everyday activism in China’s digital spheres and shed light on the sociocultural, technological, economic-political logics of platform culture in contemporary China.Accepted versio
A review of artificial intelligence applications in libraries in Southeast Asia: Where are we now?
Purpose: The purpose of this review is to examine the current state-of-the-art in artificial intelligence (AI) implementations within library settings across Southeast Asia.Design/methodology/approach: The study uses the AI Library Services Innovative Conceptual Framework (AI-LSICF) to evaluate the AI initiatives in Southeast Asian libraries. Sources include relevant libraries and association’s websites, mainstream newspapers across Southeast Asia, together with academic papers published between 2019 and 2024, with a focus solely on English-language literature.Findings: Most of the Southeast Asian libraries are in the decision and implementation stages in utilising AI technologies into library operations. It is evident that most of the libraries have made the decision to embrace AI techniques in the workplace and have started to implement the AI-enabled applications. Nevertheless, those implementations are not yet comprehensive and most of the projects are still in the trial stage. This suggests a unanimous decision concerning the use of AI in the libraries across the region has not been reached. Librarians may still face challenges and concerns in adopting AI, including resource constraints, application maintenance, staff reluctance, staff training, data security concerns and more.Research limitations/implications:
A limitation of this study is its focus on completed and published projects, due to limited access to ongoing or unpublished initiatives. Non-English publications were excluded which may have omitted relevant studies and insights from non-English-speaking countries.Practical implications: This paper seeks to address the gap by conducting a review of the current landscape of AI applications within libraries across Southeast Asia. Its aim to provide valuable insights for Southeast Asian libraries which seek to leverage AI advancements, ultimately supporting more user-centric and technologically adept library services.Originality/value: The originality of this paper lies in its unique perspectives on library settings in Southeast Asia, showcasing successful projects while also pinpointing areas and countries in need of further development.Accepted versio
The influence of mathematical problems on high mathematics anxiety students
Mathematics anxiety has been identified as an issue nationally and internationally. As part of a larger study on Mathematics Anxiety and Mathematical Problem Solving, this paper aims to explore high mathematics anxiety secondary two (13 to 14 old years old) students’ reasons and feelings with regard to choices of problems. Students were also asked to rank the order in which they would choose to solve three non-routine problems. The study strongly delineated the affective responses exhibited by highly anxious mathematics students when choosing to solve particular non-routine problems.Published versio

Predicting literacy intervention responsiveness using semi-supervised machine learning
Background: There is pervasive non-responsiveness to systematic phonics interventions which have furthermore tended to focus on near-transfer outcomes related to phonology. There is a need to predict intervention responsiveness related to far transfer outcomes such as literacy-relevant word reading and spelling. Furthermore, there is potential for the use of advanced machine learning to maximize predictive power.Aims: This study aims to longitudinally predict systematic phonics intervention using machine learning models.Method: The sample included children with special educational needs (M = 98.08 months, N = 838) who either received long-term intervention (average duration of 33.62 months) (labeled data) or only had baseline data without intervention (unlabeled data). We applied 12 semi-supervised learning models learned from the mix of labeled and unlabeled data to predict intervention responsiveness outcomes of word reading and spelling. Predictors were background information, domain-general cognitive abilities, and language-related achievement scores, with expanded predictors consisting of differences among these predictors.Results: Amongst 12 models developed, Random Forest and Gaussian Naïve Bayes models achieved the highest F1 score of 0.7 in the test set, supported by the incorporation of unlabeled data and expanded predictors. The top predictors were related to verbal comprehension, visual memory, and verbal working memory.Conclusions: We identified important predictors of intervention responsiveness and showed the promise of machine learning models with implications on the allocation of resources, mitigation of risk of failure, and tailoring of interventions
Cyberbullying victimization and mental health symptoms among children and adolescents: A meta-analysis of longitudinal studies
The open access publication is available at https://doi.org/10.1177/15248380241313051Cyberbullying victimization and mental health symptoms are major concerns for children and adolescents worldwide. Despite the increasing number of longitudinal studies of cyberbullying and mental health among this demographic, the robustness of the causal associations between cyberbullying victimization and the magnitude of mental health symptoms remains unclear. This meta-analysis investigated the longitudinal impact of cyberbullying victimization on mental health symptoms among children and adolescents. A systematic search identified primary studies published in English between January 2010 and June 2021, yielding a sample of 27 studies encompassing 13,497 children and adolescents aged 8 to 19 years old. The longitudinal association between cyberbullying victimization and mental health symptoms among children and adolescents was found to be weakly positive and consistent across time and age. Three significant moderators were identified: the effect of cyberbullying victimization on mental health was larger among older children, groups with a higher proportion of males, and in more recent publications. No evidence of publication bias was detected. This study adds to the existing body of research by providing a new perspective on the long-term effects of cyberbullying victimization on the mental health of children and adolescents’ mental health. Furthermore, it underscores the necessity of developing effective cyberbullying prevention programs, interventions, and legal regulations to comprehensively address this issue

Finger configurations and kindergarteners’ mathematical abilities
Previous research has demonstrated a link between children’s ability to name canonical finger configurations and their mathematical abilities. This study aimed to investigate the nature of this association, specifically exploring whether the relationship is skill and handshape specific and identifying the underlying mechanisms involved. Five-year-old children in Spain (N = 143) were assessed on their ability to name canonical finger configurations and analogous representations (buildings on a hill), alongside a range of mathematical skills (counting, knowledge of the verbal count sequence, single-digit arithmetic, and subitizing). Findings indicated that five-year-olds only recognize single-hand canonical finger configurations as summary symbols, processing them holistically. However, no direct association was found between the ability to recognize these configurations and the assessed mathematical skills. Notably, only the ability to name finger configurations corresponding to larger numbers (requiring enumeration) was associated with children’s arithmetic skills, suggesting that these configurations elicit combinatorial processes that are handshape specific. The implications of these findings for cognitive development and mathematical assessment are discussed, highlighting the potential for finger configurations as a tool for fostering mathematical understanding and the need for further exploration of their cognitive underpinnings.Accepted versio
