WHEN MACHINES SPEAK ENGLISH, DO WE STILL LISTEN? THE CHANGING DYNAMICS OF HUMAN AUDITORY ENGAGEMENT

    No full text
This research analyzes changing patterns of human response to machine speech within the framework of education-enabled AI technologies. This phenomenon is framed within the Media Equation Theory, Cognitive Load Theory, and the Uncanny Valley Hypothesis to study the effects of prolonged exposure to synthetic voices on emotion and trust. With a phenomenological approach, the author interviewed and asked ten Indonesian university students to respond to reflective journals. Students reported that AI voices may facilitate task-focused listening (e.g., to provide the definitions or pronounce words) but do not engage emotionally. Their lack of response adaptability and dynamic responsiveness evoke passive participation, attention drifting, and trust erosion. Students reported feeling emotionally detached, discomfort with hyper-realistic voice mimicry, and cognitive strain attributable to monotonically robotic pacing and tones. Compliance deviated from the voice of authority phenomenon; stronger collective participants expressed a greater need for emotionally responsive signalling. AI tools, while functionally convenient, do not inspire trust as conversational agents. This highlights the need for redesigning listening engagement interfaces and educational AI that adapt not only to the content but also to the user’s emotional context. Research on cross-cultural preferences and the dependence of AI voices on listening and communication skills is necessary

This study investigates the influence of intrinsic motivation and self-confidence on the English speaking ability of undergraduate students in the Industrial Engineering Study Program at Universitas Intraplasta PGRI. The research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design, involving 75 students selected through purposive sampling. Data on intrinsic motivation and self-confidence were collected using validated questionnaires, while students’ speaking ability was assessed through a standardized oral proficiency test. The collected data were analyzed using multiple linear regression to determine the extent to which the independent variables influenced the dependent variable. The results indicate that both intrinsic motivation and self-confidence have a significant positive effect on students’ English speaking ability, either partially or simultaneously. The findings highlight that students with higher intrinsic motivation and stronger self-confidence tend to demonstrate better fluency, accuracy, and communicative competence in speaking English. This study suggests that English instructors should design learning activities that foster intrinsic motivation and build students’ confidence to enhance speaking performance in technical disciplines

    No full text
Learner autonomy has gained attention in English for Foreign Language (EFL) study context, but research on its promotion through EFL textbooks used in Indonesian Classroom remains limited. This study addresses this gap by evaluating ‘English in Mind’ student’s textbook facilitation of learner autonomy. A qualitative case study was employed, using Levels of Learner Autonomy Implementation Framework to analyze the textbook. The result show that the textbook facilitates learner autonomy to varying degrees, with Awareness level being the most prominent. The facilitation of higher levels of autonomy, namely Involvement, Intervention, Creation, and Transcendence were less frequent. They suggest that while the textbook supports foundational autonomy, there are gaps in promoting higher-level autonomy. This study contributes to educational theory by illustrating how textbooks can support learner autonomy in a context with limited studies. Practically, it offers insights into how textbooks can be used to foster learner autonomy in EFL classrooms. From a policy perspective, while the findings suggest that the textbook lays a foundation for learner autonomy promotion, targeted policy initiatives are needed to systematically integrate higher-level autonomy tasks and support their effective implementation in Indonesian EFL classrooms

    No full text
Mind mapping is believed to be an effective technique for the pre-writing stage. This study aims to investigate the impact of mind mapping technique as a pre-writing activity in EFL classes. This study used a quasi-experimental research design with pre- and post-test control group design. The respondents were seventh grade students of SMPIP Assalamah Ungaran who were divided into two groups: the experimental group, which was given instructions on how to use mind mapping as a pre-writing approach, and the control group was given conventional teaching. A pre-test and post-test on writing performance were given to both groups, and the data collected from these assessments were evaluated and analyzed by comparing the results of the pre-test and post-test assessments. The results showed that there was a significant increase in the mean score of the experimental group by 13.35, while that of the control group by 5.36. This shows that pre-writing activities with mind mapping can improve students' writing skills. The mind mapping technique improves students' writing skills; ideas are more organized, sentences are more complex, the number of sentences is more in accordance with the number of ideas in each of the branches arranged in the mind map, and the relationship between sentences looks better and there is cohesion and coherence between sentences

Literature Review: Group Counseling with Transactional Analysis Approach to Overcome Aggressiveness

    No full text
This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of Group Counseling with a Transactional Analysis approach in overcoming aggressive behavior. The type of research used is library research, namely by reviewing and analyzing various relevant literature related to the topic of discussion. Transactional Analysis is an approach to counseling that emphasizes communication patterns between individuals as a reflection of a person's psychological condition. This approach is considered appropriate for group counseling because group dynamics provide space for individuals to interact and improve unhealthy transactional patterns. In this context, the form and method of communication displayed by group members are the main indicators for identifying and dealing with problems that arise, including aggressive behavior. Aggression itself is an individual's drive or tendency to hurt others, either physically, verbally, or psychologically. Through Transactional Analysis-based group counseling, individuals can be invited to recognize dominant ego states, manage emotions, and build healthier and more constructive communication. The results of the study indicate that this approach has great potential in helping individuals reduce aggressive behavior by increasing self-awareness and interpersonal skills. Keywords: Group Counseling, aggressive behavior, Transactional Analysis
