POLA SPASIAL KONSUMSI ENERGI RUMAH TANGGA DI PULAU SUMATERA TAHUN 2020
Sumatra Island is one of the largest islands in Indonesia and has a large population, but the distribution of population and utilization of energy resources is not evenly distributed. The purpose of this study is to examine the demographic, socio-economic, and physical factors of the region that affect household energy consumption on the island of Sumatra and their spatial patterns. The data used are the 2020 National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas), Village Potential (Podes) 2018 and Podes 2020. The analysis used is the Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) method, the Global Moran Index value and Local Indicators of Spatial Autocorrelation (LISA). The results showed that the demographic, socio-economic and physical factors of the area consisting of gender, age, employment status, education of the head of the household, household size, household income, access to modern energy, area of residence, regional topography and road accessibility affect household energy consumption on the island of Sumatra. The spatial pattern formed from household energy consumption on the island of Sumatra is a clustered pattern, so that the achievement of household energy consumption in one island is not evenly distributed, both in terms of the type of household energy used and the price obtained at the consumer level
REVEALING MILES’ MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES IN UGLY LOVE NOVEL THROUGH TRANSITIVITY SYSTEM
This study investigates the linguistic representation of mental health issues in the character Miles Archer from Colleen Hoover’s Ugly Love using the transitivity system of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and supported by psychoanalytic theory. A descriptive qualitative method was employed to analyze 1,171 clauses from Miles’ utterances, identifying six transitivity processes: relational, material, mental, verbal, behavioral, and existential. The findings reveal that relational processes dominate (31%), reflecting Miles’ fixation on identity and self-blame, followed by material (29.4%) and mental (29.1%) processes, which signify his emotional detachment and internal conflict. These linguistic patterns align with clinical traits of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), as outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The study concludes that transitivity analysis is a powerful tool for exploring mental health portrayals in fiction, offering interdisciplinary insights into how language encodes psychological distress
An Investigation of Error Made by Students Based on Their Gender in Writing Narrative Text
This study aims to investigate the types and frequencies of writing errors made by male and female students at SMAN 2 Indralaya Utara in composing narrative texts and to examine whether there is a significant difference in their writing performance based on gender. Employing a quantitative descriptive design with a comparative approach, the research involved 100 students (50 males and 50 females) selected through stratified random sampling. The students’ works were analyzed using Dulay, Burt, and Krashen’s (1982) surface strategy taxonomy, covering omission, addition, misformation, and misordering errors, while their overall writing performance was assessed through a rubric-based scoring system. The findings revealed that male students produced 305 errors with misformation as the most frequent type (53.77%), while female students made 167 errors, predominantly omission (40.72%). Results from the Independent Samples t-test indicated a significant difference in writing scores, where female students outperformed male students by an average of 7.251 points. The study concludes that gender influences students’ error patterns and narrative writing performance, highlighting the need for gender-sensitive teaching strategies in EFL classrooms
The Impact of Writer’s Block on Academic Writing Performance: A Study of English Education Students
This study aims to investigate the impact of writer’s block on academic writing performance among English Education students at Sriwijaya University.Employing a mixed-methods approach with Sequential Explanatory design, the participants were 59 sixth-semester students enrolled in the Academic Writing course, selected purposively as they had prior experience with Paragraph Writing and Essay Writing. Quantitative data were collected using a writing test and writer’s block questionnaire (QIWB) by Mike Rose (1981), and analyzed using Spearman’s rho. The findings revealed a correlation coefficient (r) of -0.023 and a significance value (p) of 0.865, indicating a very weak negative correlation that is not statistically significant. This result suggests that writer’s block does not meaningfully affect student’s academic writing performance, implying that it may be a minor factor compared to other influences such as language proficiency, time management, and motivation. Qualitative data were collected through open-ended questionnaires administered to 9 participants, selected purposively based on their writing test results (3 high achievers, 3 average, and 3 low achievers). The results showed that students still experienced writer’s block due to psychological pressure, lack of ideas, and overthinking, but they could overcome these challenges through peer support and self-regulation strategies. The study concludes that while writer’s block is present among students, its impact on academic writing performance is minimal, highlighting the importance of addressing broader cognitive and affective factors in writing instruction
The Influence Of Use Of Educational Games On Student Learning Outcomes In The Network Systems Administration Subject Class Xi Tkj At Muhammadiyah 1 Padang Vocational School
This study aims to analyze the impact of using educational games on students' learning outcomes in the subject of Network System Administration for 11th-grade students majoring in Computer and Network Engineering (TKJ) at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Padang. The background of this research is based on preliminary observations, which revealed that students often struggle to understand the material presented by the teacher, resulting in low learning outcomes. The learning media used appeared to be monotonous, and students lacked motivation to learn. This research employs a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental design method with a one-group pretest-posttest type. The research population comprises all 13 students of the 11th-grade TKJ class, and the entire population is used as the research sample. The research instrument consists of multiple-choice tests administered before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the use of educational games. The data were analyzed using descriptive techniques and inferential statistical tests, including normality tests and t-tests. The analysis results indicate a significant effect of using educational games on students' learning outcomes. These findings suggest that educational games can serve as an effective and engaging learning medium to enhance students' understanding and learning outcomes, and they can also be used as a reference for teachers to improve the quality of education at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Padang
INCREASING ENGLISH ABILITY OF COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS THROUGH MAHIR BAHASA INGGRIS APPLICATION AND MOBILE DICTIONARY
English is essential skill to master by not only students in English major but also students in other major such as computer science students. Since not all computer science students have enough ability in English, therefore the intervention in the teaching using Mahir Bahasa Inggris application and Mobile Dictionary were used. This study aimed at investigating the effect of these application on computer science students. This study belonged to quantitative study namely pre-experimental. Pre-test and post-test were used in this study to identify the effectiveness of these application. From the data gathered, it was found that the use of these applications specifically the use of Mahir Bahasa Inggris application has significant influence toward computer science students’ English ability especially in speaking
Moral Education Through Minangkabau Oral Tradition: A Semiotic Analysis of ‘Budi’ Pantun in the Context of Cultural Preservation
In the face of rapid globalization, traditional oral literature faces the risk of marginalization, particularly in its role as a transmitter of local wisdom and moral values. This study examines the Minangkabau traditional pantun titled Budi to explore how moral education is embedded within local poetic forms. Utilizing Riffaterre’s semiotic framework, the research applies qualitative referential analysis to uncover the symbolic and intertextual dimensions of the text. Data were collected through observation and note-taking, followed by a four-stage semiotic reading process: heuristic reading, hermeneutic interpretation, matrix-model-variant analysis, and intertextual mapping. The findings reveal that Budi pantun encapsulates a rich tapestry of moral teachings: heuristic reading uncovers normative guidance for proper conduct; hermeneutic reading highlights deeper ethical reflections; matrix-model-variant analysis emphasizes cultural ideals of civility; and intertextual analysis connects the pantun with broader moral discourses in Minangkabau and Nusantara traditions. This research contributes to the preservation of intangible cultural heritage by documenting and analyzing indigenous moral philosophy embedded in oral literature. It also provides a critical pedagogical framework for integrating traditional texts into character education curricula. By highlighting the educational potential of pantun, the study advocates for culturally responsive teaching strategies that reinforce local identity while fostering universal ethical values. Future research should explore comparative semiotic analyses across ethnic literary traditions to enrich intercultural understanding and moral literacy in education systems
DINAMIKA URBAN HEAT ISLAND DI KOTA PEKANBARU TAHUN 2013-2021
Land clearing into built-up areas can cause the urban heat island phenomenon which can have an impact on microclimate change, especially in urban areas. This study aims to determine the effect of land cover dynamics, vegetation density (NDVI), and buildings (NDBI) on surface temperature in Pekanbaru City in 2013-2021, based on interpretation of Landsat 8 imagery in 2013 and 2021. Supervised classification-maximum likelihood analysis was used to identify land cover, and calculation of pixel values to identify temperature conditions, vegetation density index, and buildings using ENVI 5.3 and ArcGIS 10.5 software. Furthermore, multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted using SPSS 25 software between the variables of land cover classification, vegetation density and buildings on land surface temperature to determine the factors that significantly affect the Urban Heat Island phenomenon in Pekanbaru City. The results of this study indicate that there is a relationship between land cover change and temperature increase in Pekanbaru City with a sig. value of <0.05. This indication is related to the increase in settlement area of 2,263 ha causing an increase in high temperature class (29-330C) which is spatially concentrated in Pekanbaru City
Teachers’ Perceptions of Using FluentU as Learning Media to Improve Students’ Pronunciation
This study explores teachers' perceptions of using FluentU, a video-based language learning application, to enhance students' pronunciation skills in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. Recognizing that pronunciation plays a crucial role in communicative competence; the research addresses the gap in studies focusing specifically on digital platforms like FluentU. The study used a qualitative phenomenological design to gather data from eight secondary school teachers in Medan through closed-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that teachers generally hold positive perceptions of FluentU, with an average score of 31.65 and a percentage score of 79.125%, categorizing the effectiveness of application as "Good." Teachers noted FluentU's strengths in enhancing student motivation, suprasegmental pronunciation (intonation, rhythm), and phoneme recognition. However, they expressed reservations about using FluentU as the primary tool for pronunciation instruction, citing the need for more interactive feedback and advanced segmental practice. The study concludes that while FluentU is a valuable supplementary resource for improving pronunciation, a blended learning approach may be optimal. These insights contribute to the growing field of digital-assisted language learning, highlighting the potential of interactive multimedia tools in EFL pronunciation teaching
EXPLORING STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS ON NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKER TEACHER (NEST) TEACHING STYLES
This study investigates English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ perceptions of the teaching styles of native English speaking teacher (NESTs). Using a qualitative phenomenological method, the study investigated students' experiences, preferences, and concerns while learning from native English-speaking lecturer. Data were gathered through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 28 fifth-year English language students at a university in North Sumatra, Indonesia. The findings demonstrate that, in general, students have various positive perceptions regarding native speaker teacher, particularly their participatory teaching techniques, structured assignments, effective classroom management, and strong communication abilities. Furthermore, students enjoy the affective qualities of teaching, such as passion, empathy, and drive, which help to create a positive learning environment. However, some students had difficulties due to cultural differences and a linguistic barrier. This study highlights the significance of communicative and learner-centered learning strategies in foreign language acquisition. The findings suggest that pairing NEST teacher with non-native English teachers can result in a more balanced and effective language learning experience. Although this study produced useful insights, its scope was confined to a single college, indicating the need for a larger study that covers other universities and varied language learning contexts. Future research should look at the long-term impacts of NNEST training and ways for bridging cultural and language gaps in the English classroom
