    No full text
This study investigates how task complexity affects students’ speaking performance based on their English proficiency levels. It was conducted at SMA N 9 Bandar Lampung in the 2024/2025 academic year with 31 eleventh-grade students, divided into low (n = 16) and high (n = 15) proficiency groups. Each student completed a simple and a complex speaking task. The tasks were based on task-based language teaching (TBLT) and aligned with the curriculum. Using Two-Way ANOVA, the results showed that both task complexity and proficiency level significantly influenced speaking performance (p<0.05). High proficiency students outperformed low proficiency students in all aspects: complexity (M = 3.85 vs. 2.97), accuracy (M = 4.12 vs. 3.21), and fluency (M = 4.08 vs. 3.05). A significant interaction was also found, meaning task complexity affected students differently depending on their proficiency. This study shows that speaking tasks should be adjusted to students’ proficiency levels to improve learning outcomes

This study applies Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, utilizing Teun A. van Dijk’s methodological framework. Since its release in 1975, the song has captivated audiences with its intricate composition and enigmatic lyrics, sparking diverse interpretations. This research explores how language and discourse within the lyrics reflect, construct, and challenge dominant ideologies and power structures. Through van Dijk’s model, the study examines the macrostructure, microstructure, and superstructure of the song in relation to social cognition and contextual influences. By analyzing linguistic choices, narrative elements, and intertextual meanings, the research reveals how the song navigates themes of identity, defiance, and existential turmoil. The findings indicate that Bohemian Rhapsody extends beyond its musical significance, functioning as a vehicle for cultural critique and social reflection. This study underscores the interdisciplinary relevance of CDA in music analysis, highlighting how discourse in popular songs both shapes and mirrors sociocultural dynamics, reinforcing their role in critical discourse studies

    No full text
This study explores how local tourism and hospitality workers in West Sumatra negotiate intercultural encounters with international tourists through the use of strategic communication practices. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through non-intrusive observations of seven naturally occurring service interactions in public tourism spaces such as cafés, markets, and hotels in Padang. The findings reveal that five communication strategies—simplification, code-switching, nonverbal cues, reiteration, and pragmatic accommodation—were used consistently to overcome language barriers and facilitate mutual understanding. These strategies were not applied in isolation but often overlapped, creating a multimodal ecology of communication that emphasized empathy, relational harmony, and context-sensitive adaptability. Interestingly, no digital mediation tools were observed, highlighting the dominance of face-to-face interaction in this tourism setting. The results challenge deficit-oriented perspectives that frame limited English proficiency as a barrier to effective service delivery. Instead, the study demonstrates that flexible communication strategies, grounded in local cultural values such as hospitality and cooperation, can effectively support intercultural dialogue and service satisfaction. The implications extend to English language teaching, tourism training, and policy-making, emphasizing the need for scenario-based pedagogy that fosters pragmatic competence and intercultural sensitivity among tourism professionals. Keywords: communication strategies, intercultural tourism, English as a lingua franca, multilingual interaction, hospitality industr
