    No full text
Community ills such as beggars on the waterfront (seaside) in Padang are a social issue that requires special attention.  This research aims to determine the factors that cause the presence of beggars on Padang beaches, the factors that cause beggars to quit their profession, the life patterns of beggars on Padang beaches, and the impact that beggars have on visitors to Padang beaches.  The research method used is a qualitative approach using observation, interview and documentation study techniques.  The socio-economic impact that arises is the emergence of social inequality, decreased community productivity, and an increase in the government's burden in dealing with these social problems.  Comprehensive efforts are needed from the government and community to overcome the phenomenon of begging on the Padang seafront, such as empowering the community's economy, increasing access to education and skills training, as well as strict law enforcement

Waste Management through the 3R Program in Perspective Sociology of Environmental Communication

    No full text
Waste management has become a significant issue in Tangerang Regency, despite the presence of a Final Disposal Site (TPA). The open dumping method at TPA has negative environmental impacts, necessitating government involvement in policy regulation and enforcement. This study aims to analyze government communication strategies in waste management, evaluate the effectiveness of Reduce Reuse Recycle Waste Treatment Sites (TPS 3R), and identify challenges in their implementation. The theoretical framework is based on environmental communication sociology, particularly in managing public participation. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach at TPS 3R Mustika over a three-month period. The findings indicate that communication strategies through social media and field activities effectively increase community participation. Furthermore, TPS 3R Mustika is effective as an educational center, despite facing challenges such as low public awareness and limited financial support. In conclusion, increased socialization, cooperation with third parties, and improvements to TPS facilities are necessary. This study offers a reference for other regions in developing sustainable waste management programs. The novelty of this research lies in its strategic communication approach through TPS 3R as an educational center aimed at enhancing public participation in waste management

Spiritual Capital as a Driver of Entrepreneurial Spirit Permanent Community, Gambirsari, Salatiga

    No full text
This paper proves that spiritual capital is the driving force of entrepreneurial spirit. Spirituality comes from religious values, traditions, and the environment. It can be seen in the community of Tetep, Dukuh Gambirsari Kelurahan Randuacir, Salatiga, Central Java. The entrepreneurial spirit in this community develops due to the impacts of spirituality that manifest in daily practice. The approach of this paper is autoethnography, which is a narrative study based on the experiences of individuals and communities in society. The research utilizes the theories of capital developed by Karl Marx, Weber, and Pierre Bourdieu. Marx emphasized that humans are beings who work, and material possessions serve as the driving force behind work. Weber argues that economic development is closely intertwined with non-economic factors. Bourdieu conceptualizes capital across various dimensions-economic, cultural, social, and symbolic – which are interconnected with habitus and field. The spiritual capital that grows through the practice of life shows that people have the ability to manifest the appreciation of spirituality into the power to survive and thrive amid changing times. In its development, it was also found that some members of the community did not view their businesses solely as a means of survival, but rather as a source of livelihood that created jobs for many people. This spiritual capital is developed in concrete actions through the creations of self-employment in the form of trade and service business. The development of an entrepreneurial society with all its implementations can be used in this approach. Spiritual capital gives rise to fortitude, perseverance, courage to take risks, learners, gratitude, fruitfulness, and honesty. This spirit became the driving force of capitalism for marginalized communities, known as marginal capitalism or village capitalism. They proved the values, culture, and norms of society

CRITICAL THINKING AND PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS OF MAKASSAR YOUNG LEARNERS: AN EXPLORATION OF THE ROLES OF LITERACY, GENDER, AND SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS

    No full text
Critical thinking and problem-solving are key 21st-century competencies that determine students’ academic success and life readiness. Although numerous studies have been conducted, most have focused on dispositional aspects and learning strategies, whereas the dimensions of self-confidence and systematic thinking have remained relatively underexplored. This study addresses this gap by examining differences in critical thinking and problem-solving skills based on literacy, gender, socioeconomic status (SES), and maternal educational background. Using a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 1,797 junior secondary students in Makassar, Indonesia. Statistical analyses using t-tests and one-way ANOVA were employed to examine mean differences across groups. Results revealed that students with higher reading–writing literacy demonstrated greater self-confidence and more systematic thinking. Female students outperformed males in reflective aspects of critical thinking and problem-solving, whereas SES differences appeared only in the essential systematicity of thinking. No significant differences were found based on maternal education. These findings highlight literacy as the strongest differentiating factor in students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. In practice, the study underscores the importance of interdisciplinary, literacy-based instruction to strengthen students’ higher-order thinking skills. Future research should employ longitudinal and mixed-method approaches to explore the mediating role of the cultural environment in shaping young learners’ critical cognition in developing countries

DISCOURSE, IDENTITY, AND RITUAL ROLES: PARTICIPANT DYNAMICS IN THE ANRONG BUNTING KARAENG WEDDING TRADITION OF JENEPONTO

    No full text
This study investigates the role of participants in the Anrong Bunting Karaeng ritual speechwithin the Jeneponto community’s wedding processions in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Using an ethnographic approach framed by Duranti’s anthropological linguistics, the research analyzes ritual texts and performances from five ceremonial stages: Akbakra (yellow powder), Appasili (bridal bath), Akkrontigi (girlfriend night), Appantama Baju (wearing the wedding dress), and Appabajikang (uniting). Findings indicate two leading participant roles: internal participants encoded in the ritual texts through pronouns (e.g., proclitics ku- ‘I’, enclitics -na ‘he/she’, -nu ‘you’), and external participants comprising families, relatives, and guests. Beyond the grammatical functions, these pronouns construct social roles, hierarchies, and symbolic authority, with Anrong Bunting Karaeng serving as both animator and mediator between human and spiritual realms. The study highlights that ritual speech encodes power relations and collective identity, positioning participants as actors and carriers of cultural values. However, the analysis remains primarily descriptive; further research should integrate multimodal data (gesture, intonation, performance) and explore generational changes in ritual interpretation. This research contributes to anthropolinguistics by showing how ritual discourse preserves cultural identity while adapting to modernity. It also emphasizes the importance of documenting and analyzing local rituals to sustain intangible cultural heritage in Indonesia and beyond

MYTH, MEMORY, AND RESILIENCE: REASSESING THE BAKAUA RITUAL IN MINANGKABAU THROUGH STRUCTURALISM AND CULTURAL CONTINUITY

    No full text
This study explores the resilience of the bakaua ritual in Minangkabau society, focusing on its capacity to endure amid modernization, Islamization, and heritage commodification pressures. While many indigenous rituals have been desacralized or abandoned, bakaua persists as an annual agricultural rite rooted in myth and collective belief. Employing ethnographic fieldwork in Nagari Sijunjung and structuralist analysis of ten foundational myths, this research uncovers the reciprocal relationship between myth and ritual as the key mechanism of persistence. The myths surrounding Syeh Muhsin, a historical cleric mythologized as a sacred figure, provide legitimacy and narrative continuity. In turn, ritual practice actualizes these myths through sacred relics, communal cooperation, and annual recitation, thus embedding them in collective memory. This dynamic interplay between narrative and practice reinforces social cohesion, religious legitimacy, and cultural identity. Findings highlight that Bakaua is not merely a ritual obligation but a cultural strategy for resilience, sustained by collective memory and consciousness. However, external challenges such as tourism-driven commodification and generational shifts pose risks to its sanctity. By linking structuralist insights with theories of collective memory and cultural resilience, this study contributes to broader debates on how rituals adapt and survive in contemporary societies. The research underscores the importance of local agency in heritage preservation, emphasizing that cultural sustainability requires balancing internal values with external pressures. Ultimately, Bakaua exemplifies how myth and ritual co-create resilience, offering a model for understanding intangible heritage persistence globally.

Digital Education Through E-Booklets: Strategies To Enhance Adolescent Girls' Knowledge On The Impacts Of Early Marriage

    No full text
Indonesia is one of the countries with the highest prevalence of early marriage in Southeast Asia. The lack of knowledge among adolescent girls about the negative impacts of early marriage is a major contributing factor to the high rates of child marriage. Digital educational media, such as e-booklets, are considered effective tools to enhance adolescents' understanding. This study aims to determine the relationship between the provision of education using e-booklet media and the level of knowledge among adolescent girls regarding the risks of early marriage. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was employed. The subjects were 53 female students from Primbana Private Senior High School in Medan. Data were collected through an online questionnaire and analyzed using the chi-square test. Of the 53 respondents, 30 students (56.6%) received e-booklet education, while 23 students (43.4%) did not. A significant relationship was found between e-booklet education and increased knowledge about early marriage (p = 0.049; OR = 3.630; 95% CI: 1.155–11.406). E-booklet education effectively delivers information in a visual and interactive manner, making it easier to understand. Providing education through e-booklets is effective in enhancing adolescent girls' knowledge about early marriage. Active involvement of schools and healthcare facilities is necessary to implement similar educational media sustainably

ANALISIS PENGARUH LEVERAGE (SUSTAINABLE REPORTING, SALES GROWTH DAN DEBT TO EQUITY RATIO) TERHADAP KINERJA RETURN ON ASSETS (ROA) DAN RETURN ON EQUITY (ROE)

    No full text
This study aims to analyze the influence of Sustainability Reporting (SR), Sales Growth (SG), and Debt to Equity Ratio (DER) on Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE). A quantitative approach was employed, with a sample of 30 companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) from 2019–2023, selected using purposive sampling. The results indicate: (1) SR has a positive effect on ROA by enhancing operational efficiency and corporate reputation; (2) SG does not consistently influence ROA due to potential mismatches between revenue growth and cost management; (3) DER dynamically impacts ROA, where optimal leverage improves profitability, while excessive debt may reduce ROA. Furthermore, (4) SR positively affects ROE as ESG practices strengthen investor confidence; (5) SG has no significant impact on ROE since net profit depends on capital efficiency rather than sales growth alone; (6) DER enhances ROE through financial leverage, provided debt is managed prudently. The findings highlight the importance of SR and balanced debt management for financial performance, whereas SG requires complementary efficiency strategies. Companies are advised to integrate sustainability practices and optimize leverage for long-term profitability
