Algorithms, Filter Bubbles, and Information Consumption Patterns: Implications of Mass Communication In Digital Platforms

    No full text
The development of digital technology and algorithms used by social media platforms has transformed the patterns of information consumption in society. The phenomenon of the filter bubble, where users are exposed only to information that aligns with their preferences and beliefs, has narrowed the space for public discourse. This study aims to explore the impact of algorithms on mass communication and its implications for information consumption patterns. The research utilizes a literature review with a descriptive qualitative approach, analyzing various articles and studies related to the influence of algorithms and the filter bubble on media interactions and audiences. The findings reveal that algorithms play a significant role in directing and limiting the types of information users are exposed to. This reinforces the formation of echo chambers, where individuals are more likely to receive information that confirms their existing beliefs, reducing the diversity of perspectives. The study also finds that this phenomenon may exacerbate social polarization, shrink the space for constructive dialogue, and influence political and social behavior. As a result, mass communication in the digital era faces new challenges in creating an inclusive and open public space. This research is expected to provide insights for the development of media policies and digital literacy to address the evolving landscape of mass communication in the future

Social media is now not only a mass communication tool but also a means of massively and rapidly shaping people's consumption patterns. In Padang City, the increase in social media use has triggered significant changes in consumer behavior, particularly among the younger generation. The emerging issues are not only related to impulsive consumption but also to individuals' increasing reliance on social media as a primary reference in determining consumption needs. This phenomenon raises concerns about the blurring of the line between real needs and digitally constructed desires. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, the data in this study were obtained through literature review and interviews with 30 respondents aged 18–40 who actively use social media for at least 2 hours per day. The results indicate that platforms such as Instagram and TikTok play a significant role in influencing purchasing decisions, particularly through promotional content and viral trends. These findings confirm that social media is a crucial actor in shaping urban consumer culture. Therefore, strengthening digital literacy and education on healthy consumption are needed to enable the public to respond wisely to social media exposure. Keywords: digital consumption, mass communication, social media, consumer behavior, visual trends

MEETING ESP NEEDS OF NURSING STUDENTS: PERSPECTIVES FROM STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONAL

    No full text
The nursing profession in Indonesia is rapidly developing, with an increasing demand for skilled nurses who can provide high-quality patient care. As the healthcare industry becomes increasingly globalized, the ability to communicate effectively in English is becoming an essential skill for nurses. However, existing English language teaching materials for nursing do not adequately prepare nursing students and practicing nurses to face the challenges they will encounter in the global healthcare environment. To address this gap, it is necessary to develop new teaching materials specifically tailored to the needs of Indonesian nurses. Therefore, it is crucial to explore the English language needs for professional nurses in developing future English for nursing curricula and teaching materials that align with the demands of the workforce. This research has high urgency and novelty because it involves nursing students at University X in West Jakarta, Indonesia, and professional nurses who work using English as a medium, thereby connecting global needs with campus learning. The involvement of these professional nurses contributes to authentic English language input in the nursing context. Qualitative research using semi-structured interviews and questionnaires with open-ended questions will be used to collect data. The research results have implications for the development of teaching materials, curricula, and campus learning

Mapping Political Rhetoric: A Scientometric Analysis of Figurative Language in Political Discourse (2014-2024)

    No full text
Political speech plays a crucial role in shaping public perception, influencing emotions, and constructing ideological narratives. This study employs a scientometric approach to analyze research trends on figurative language in political discourse over the past decade (2014–2024). Using bibliometric data from the Scopus database, we examined 870 journal articles to identify key themes, publication trends, and dominant research clusters. Findings indicate significant growth in the field, particularly from 2018 onward, reflecting increased scholarly interest in political rhetoric. Social Media and Society, Cogent Arts & Humanities, and Theory and Practice in Language Studies emerged as leading publication venues. Thematic analysis revealed four major research clusters: (1) Language and Rhetoric, focusing on metaphor, framing, and discourse strategies; (2) Politician Identity, covering leadership, charisma, and political messaging; (3) Political Discourse, highlighting ideology, persuasion, and propaganda; and (4) Political Events, examining how figurative language is used during elections, crises, and debates. While this study provides a macro-level overview of research on figurative language in politics, it also highlights gaps in qualitative analysis. Future research should integrate rhetorical criticism with scientometric approaches to provide deeper insights into how figurative language influences political engagement. Additionally, expanding the dataset to include diverse linguistic and cultural perspectives would enhance the understanding of global rhetorical strategies. By mapping this field, the study contributes to a more comprehensive knowledge of how language and power interact in political communication

The Influence of Parenting Patterns on Learning Motivation of Students with Learning Difficulties

    No full text
This study aims to analyze the influence of parenting styles on the learning motivation of students with learning difficulties. The research subject is a fourth-grade male student who has experienced learning difficulties and has repeated a grade twice. His parents work as market traders, limiting their ability to provide supervision and academic support at home. This lack of parental involvement negatively impacts the child’s learning motivation, leading to frequent absences and low participation in academic activities. This research employs a case study method with a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out through observations at school and home, interviews with teachers and parents, and analysis of attendance records and academic performance. The findings indicate that permissive parenting and lack of parental supervision contribute to low learning motivation. The absence of tailored educational interventions further exacerbates the student’s academic struggles. Therefore, strategies such as tutoring programs, enhanced communication between schools and parents, and more targeted educational interventions are needed to provide better academic support for students with learning difficulties. Keywords: Parenting Style, Learning Motivation, Learning Difficulties, Special Educatio

Students' Perspectives on Leveraging Lemon8 to Improve English Vocabulary in Middle School

    No full text
This study aims to analyze middle school students' perceptions of using the Lemon8 application to enhance their English vocabulary mastery. Using a qualitative method with a case study approach, this research involved ten students who had used Lemon8 for one month. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using thematic analysis based on Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, which emphasizes the role of social interaction in learning. The findings indicate that 80% of students found Lemon8 engaging, 70% considered the application effective in improving vocabulary, and 80% stated that it was easily accessible. However, several challenges were identified, such as its content being more focused on entertainment rather than education and the lack of practice and evaluation features to measure students’ vocabulary development. Additionally, technical challenges such as unstable internet connectivity and limited access to devices were also observed in this study. These findings suggest that Lemon8 has potential as an interactive learning tool to support English vocabulary mastery, but further development is needed to optimize its effectiveness in formal educational settings.
