Community Empowerment In Palaes Tourism Village, West Likupang District

    No full text
Community empowerment is crucial for the sustainability of a village, especially a tourism village. The community is the core of development, ensuring that a tourism village is not merely a temporary viral phenomenon but can thrive long-term by involving the community as the primary foundation, rather than focusing on outsiders. This ensures that the community is not colonized within its own village and can generate its own income. The goal of developing tourism villages through the community is essentially to ensure the economic sustainability of the tourism village itself. From the community, to the community, and for the community. The purpose of this research is to understand community empowerment (enabling, empowering, protecting) or providing, empowering, and protecting. This research was conducted in Palaes Tourism Village, West Likupang District. The research method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method, namely data in the form of a collection of words, images, videos, recordings, and not numbers. The research instruments were the Palaes village government (Old Law, Old Law Secretary, Director of Bumdes) and the community (members of MSMEs, ordinary people) and also tourists as supporting factors. The research was conducted for 6 months, from May 2023 to December 2023. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study conclude that enabling (providing) the government successfully provides support in various ways for the advancement of tourist villages, so that the community can recognize the potential of the village and the potential of human resources (HR) itself, namely by building cooperation with various parties to achieve the necessary facilities. Empowering (empowering), the government empowers the community through Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDES), namely by becoming members of MSMEs, handicrafts, and becoming homestay managers. According to the interview results, only 30% of the community is directly involved in empowerment, the rest is still being worked on by the government. Protecting (protecting), the government's way of protecting the Palaes tourist village system is twofold: external protection, namely by being very selective in choosing future investors. Do not let investors be more important than the community itself, especially if it is colonized in the village itself. Next, internal protection, namely by always maintaining good relations with the Palaes tourist village community, both those directly involved and those who have not been involved/have not yet involved themselves in the development of the tourist village. The government considers maintaining harmony between the government and the community and between communities is paramount to prevent conflicts that break the system. In addition, the government also protects the system by providing firmness and sanctions to people who violate the rules

Financial and Institutional Quality: A Study on the Tourism Sector in Top Global Destinations

    No full text
This study analyzes the driving factors of the tourism sector in the top 17 global destinations based on International Tourism Highlights from 2000 to 2023. Using the GMM (Generalized Method of Moments) panel data method, this study specifically examines the role of financial development and institutional quality in developing the tourism sector. Our findings indicate that financial development has a positive and significant impact on the tourism sector in the short and long term. These results underscore that an efficient financial system and broad access to capital are important foundations for investment in the tourism sector. Conversely, the impact of institutional quality was positive but not consistently significant, implying that its role may be more facilitative or take longer to manifest. This study concludes that strengthening the financial system should be a key policy priority for governments promoting sustainable tourism. These findings make an important contribution to the tourism literature by providing comprehensive empirical evidence on the importance of these structural factors in shaping the global tourism landscape

    No full text
This study aims to analyze the use of multimodal resources in teaching English writing at the senior high school level, particularly their contribution to content delivery, student engagement, and lesson sequencing. The research was conducted in class X-2 of a public Madrasah Aliyah in Medan with 35 students, using classroom video recordings as the primary data collection method. Data analysis was carried out through O’Halloran’s as Systemic Functional Multimodal Discourse Analysis (SF-MDA), examining ideational, interpersonal, and textual meanings. The recorded lessons were divided into 40 segments covering the entire teaching sequence and analyzed based on verbal, visual, gestural, spatial, digital, and collective synchrony modes. The findings revealed that verbal and visual modes dominated content delivery, gestural and spatial modes directed students’ attention, and interpersonal engagement was enhanced through praise, humor, motivational prompts, digital interaction, and collective activities. Textual meaning was achieved through the integration of multiple modes, marking transitions, providing scaffolding, and maintaining lesson coherence. These results highlight the strategic implementation of multimodal resources as essential for creating an interactive, inclusive, and effective learning environment, offering practical insights for teachers to optimize English writing instruction at the secondary school level

A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF AI IN CHINESE COLLEGE ENGLISH EDUCATION BEFORE GENERATIVE AI: TYPES, ROLES, AND FUNCTIONS

    No full text
The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on language learning has grown rapidly, with various AI-based tools emerging. However, comprehensive reviews of its role in College English education in China remain scarce. Following PRISMA guidelines, this study systematically reviewed peer-reviewed empirical articles published between August 2013 and August 2023 across nine databases, including CNKI. Of the 1,224 screened studies, 15 empirical works from China (two in Chinese) were included, and a comparative analysis was conducted on the types of AI applied and their relevance to College English teaching. The findings indicate a generally positive attitude toward AI integration in College English, with particular emphasis on AI assessment systems and visual technologies. However, the review also identifies a techno-instrumentalist bias, with AI primarily framed as a tool for performance enhancement, while its implications for learner agency and identity construction remain underexamined. This review summarizes the decade's research trends, revealing that studies predominantly used quantitative and experimental methods, while qualitative research and mixed-methods studies were relatively scarce. Notably, research between 2019 and 2023 surged around immersive and automated systems, raising questions about which types of AI attract academic and institutional focus. Future research should diversify methodologies and address sociocultural, ethical, and equity issues in AI use. Though generative AI is emerging, its accessibility and ease of use mark a shift from resource-intensive tools like VR. Yet, its growing adoption requires critical inquiry into whose knowledge it privileges and what ideologies it reinforces in English education

This study investigates how multimodal learning practices can cultivate critical and ethical information and digital literacy among university students in teacher education. Responding to growing concerns about superficial digital skills and limited attention to ethics, the research explores how a multimodal writing and digital literacy course supported students’ development beyond technical proficiency. A qualitative interpretive case study was conducted in an Indonesian university, involving one lecturer and twelve undergraduate students over a twelve-week semester. Data were generated through non-participant classroom observations, semi-structured individual and group interviews, students’ reflective journals, and multimodal artefacts such as infographics, digital essays, and video projects, and were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings reveal three interconnected processes. First, students developed critical awareness as they interrogated source credibility, questioned visual and verbal representations, and recognized how semiotic choices shape meaning. Second, ethical reflection emerged when students engaged with issues of attribution, authorship, representation, and audience impact, gradually internalizing fairness, respect, and responsibility as part of their digital identities. Third, collaborative multimodal projects transformed learning into a shared ethical practice, fostering dialogic negotiation, empathy, and intercultural awareness. The study concludes that intentionally scaffolded multimodal pedagogy can reframe digital literacy as a social, cultural, and moral practice, offering concrete design and assessment principles for preparing reflective, responsible digital citizens in higher education
