On the Unmarked Natures of “zhe” and “so”
On anaphora of Chinese and Japanese demonstratives, “zhe” and “so” have higher use frequencies relative to other demonstratives, and are thus considered to be unmarked. Based on the investigation and analysis of data and examples from the corpus, this paper identifies their differences in terms of their respective unmarked nature, i. e. the anaphora of “zhe” is the expansion of its respective deixis, and its use is default if it is not necessary to express a particular sense of distance ; the anaphora of “so” is its original usage, and it has a strong function which can implant the aforementioned meaning into the referential object. Finally, the argument is verified by comparing the translation equivalence.departmental bulletin pape
Pamela Colman Smith and Yone Noguchi: The Significance of The Green Sheaf for the International Poet
Modernist painter Pamela Colman Smith (1878-1951) and poet Yone Noguchi, or Yonejiro Noguchi (1875-1947) lived in roughly the same generation and both experienced two world wars. Neither is the type of artist to be found in textbooks. Colman’s name is most known in occult circles as “the tarot card painter.” Noguchi is
regarded for his short tenure as a known “international poet” in Japan, America, and England.
At the turn of the twenty-first century, Colman began to attract rejuvenated cultural and literary attention, and studies of Noguchi deepened considerably. This renewed interest has indicated the two shared a connection. In 1903, Colman founded the small magazine, The Green Sheaf, in London. The Green Sheaf subsequently published three of Noguchi’s English poems, “The Violet,” “Evening,” and “Mugen.” This paper will discuss how and why Noguchi submitted his poems to The Green Sheaf, along with the significance of the poems’ submission and publication held for both Colman and Noguchi.departmental bulletin pape
The Solidarity of ‘Fishermen’ in the Kumano-Nada Sea of the Movements Against the Nuclear Power Plants in the 1960s: A Study of Residents’ Movements Beyond Administrative Frameworks
Kumano-Nada Sea is a coast facing the Pacific Ocean in the southeastern part of the Kii Peninsula. In the1960s, the first movement against nuclear power plants began in Ashihama on the coast of Kumano-nada ; sincethen, a total of nine projects have been blocked on the Kii Peninsula. The movement in Ashihama in 1963 is considered to be Japan’s first full-scale anti-nuclear power plant movement and became an important model for future activism against nuclear power plants on the coast of the Kumano-Nada.
In this paper, we attempt to frame the movement against the nuclear power plant in Ashihama as an initial condition for the residents of the coast of the Kumano-Nada who opposed nuclear power plants. To do so, we use records of the movement to reconstruct its process and consider its characteristics. We found that fishermen had shared negative experiences of sea pollution due to coastal development in the 1950s and 1960s. Because of this, they had a cautious attitude toward the many unknowns around the large-scale development of nuclear power plants and were strongly motivated to learn about the potential concerns. Power companies considered areas on the coast of Kumano-Nada as ideal for nuclear power plant sites because they were depopulated and isolated. The fishermen, however, were connected through the sea even if they were not in the same administrative divisions; they could therefore share information through their preexisting network and support each other in their movement against the power plants. Future activist movements learned from the solidarity of the fishermen and used these strategies to prevent other nuclear power projects.departmental bulletin pape
Development of Teaching Materials on Microscale Experiments using Low-cost Handmade Well Plates, Part 1 — Chemical Reactions concerning Baking Soda (Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate) and Elemental Iodine —
The author has already proposed the low-cost handmade well plates that contain plastic bottle caps and white cardboard containers for microscale experiments. Using these plates, teaching materials of microscale experiments on chemical reactions concerning baking soda (sodium hydrogen carbonate) and elemental iodine have been investigated for elemental school students. Daily necessities such as baking soda, citric acid, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), starch, and gargle liquid containing elemental iodine were used for reagents in order to secure safety during experiments. First, a teaching material on chemical reactions of baking soda and citric acid or vitamin C has been developed. Second, a teaching material on the iodine starch reaction and on the reduced reaction of elemental iodine by vitamin C has been developed. The required times for both microscale experiments were approximately five minutes, and the results for these experiments were the same as those for ordinary scale experiments. Using these new teaching materials, the author will perform practical lessons.departmental bulletin pape
Cross‒cultural Experiences of Study Abroad Programs in India and Their Significance : Reflections from Miyagi Gakuin Women’s University
In this report, I document the history, features, and content of MiyagiGakuin Women’s University’s study abroad program in India, which was carried out six times between 1994 and 2016. The program consisted of group activities, such as interviews and questionnaire surveys, conducted in cities with different cultural backgrounds, including Delhī as the capital of India and Vārānasī as the Hindū sanctuary. Our program was also conducted in Agra, where the Tāj Mahal is located, and the city of Jaipūr, which was the center of an eighteenth century princely state. The purpose of the program is to deepen understanding of Indian society and culture by visiting sites in person, experiencing different cultures, and interacting with local people. In this report, I divide the history into three periods and introduce the program itineraries, student activity reports, and learning. From this we can see not only the characteristics of each period, but also the changes in Indian society that have taken place during the 22 years. Finally, I consider the significance and challenges of the program in light of possible future study programs in India.departmental bulletin pape
