Open Strategy and the implementation of VSME standards in SMEs : challenges, risks, opportunities, and support ecosystems
This thesis investigates the Voluntary Reporting Standard for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (VSME). It explores how Open Strategy (OS) principles address the unique challenges these firms face in environmental reporting. The study identifies resource constraints and a lack of practical guidance as significant barriers to effective adoption of this standard. This qualitative inquiry employs a single case study and semi-structured interviews to examine the intersection of these critical areas. Key findings indicate that successful implementation involves “Calibrated Openness,” a selective application of transparency and inclusivity. The work also reveals a "paradox of expertise," emphasizing the need to balance specialized knowledge with engaged operational staff. This research develops a comprehensive framework, bridging theoretical insights with practical application, to guide successful VSME processes. It contributes to understanding how openness facilitates responsible practices in resource-constrained environments, thereby advancing strategic management theory.Calvin Lenno GräßleMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202

CSR in Controversial Industries: Overcoming Legitimacy Barriers through Openness : Towards a Conceptual Framework
This thesis explores how businesses operating in controversial industries such as oil, tobacco, and gambling can establish, maintain, and defend the legitimacy of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives through greater openness. Although CSR is widely adopted as a tool to align corporate behaviour with societal expectations, firms with a persistent negative stigma often face heightened public scepticism, even in the face of extensive CSR engagement. While previous studies have primarily focused on CSR implementation (e.g., sustainability reporting), the underlying processes influencing the legitimacy of CSR initiatives remain largely underexplored, particularly in stigmatized sectors. To address this gap, this conceptual study draws on an integrative literature review that combines insights from Stakeholder Theory, Legitimacy Theory, and CSR literature with the two core dimensions of Open Strategy: transparency and inclusion. Based on this synthesis, the study develops a conceptual framework identifying five misalignments that illustrate how discrepancies between corporate actions and societal expectations can undermine CSR legitimacy: (1) Inclusion Refusal, (2) Exclusion of the Affected, (3) Talk More, Act Less, (4) Doing Right but Rooted Wrong, and (5) Investing Without Listening. In addition, eleven associated legitimacy barriers are derived to explore whether and how these barriers can be addressed through the lens of Open Strategy. The findings suggest that although Open Strategy shows mixed dynamics in overcoming these barriers, it offers a valuable, process-oriented approach that may help controversial firms establish, maintain, or defend the legitimacy of their CSR initiatives over time. Moreover, top-down CSR practices appear least compatible with the core principles of Open Strategy, highlighting the importance of its processual orientation. The study concludes by proposing Open Strategy as a promising approach for overcoming key limitations in traditional CSR, offering both theoretical insights and practical guidance, while advocating a paradigm shift from “Talk More, Act Less” to “Act More, Talk Less.”Masterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202

In the area of information security, companies are subject to various requirements that can differ depending on the industry. One example of this is the automotive industry. TISAX is an established assessment and exchange procedure for verifying the status of information security. This is based on a questionnaire developed by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) in order to address industry-specific circumstances. In addition, the manufacture of motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts falls within the scope of the NIS 2 Directive, which means that the companies concerned are legally obliged to implement appropriate measures in the area of information security. If a company is now subject to both requirements, this can present a challenge. For this reason, this master thesis develops a process model that supports automotive industry suppliers in efficiently expanding the existing TISAX label in order to fulfil the requirements of NIS. The structure comprises five steps, which are carried out in a defined sequence and ensure that the results produced are kept up to date. Ten guideline-based expert interviews were conducted to test this developed process model. In general, the interviewed experts were of the opinion that this approach is an efficient way to expand the existing TISAX label in order to fulfil the NIS requirements. However, there is room for improvement in the described implementation of the process model. Furthermore, an exemplary run-through of the model is shown in this master thesis.ausgeführt von: Sascha OrtnerMasterarbeit Fachhochschule Technikum Wien 202
In the era of digitalization and the widespread use of mobile applications, data protection has become a key challenge. This master’s thesis examines the compliance of mobile applications with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and evaluates the data protection practices of ten selected apps. The central research question is: To what extent do the data protection practices of mobile applications meet the requirements of the GDPR?In order to answer this question, a methodological approach was chosen that combines empirical, deductive and comparative analyses. The investigation includes the analysis of the apps’ privacy policies, the collection of information provided in the app stores and technical checks of the trackers and permissions. A detailed questionnaire with 90 questions covering the central requirements of the GDPR was developed and used to evaluate the apps. The results show that none of the apps examined fully comply with the requirements of the GDPR. Common violations include a lack of transparency in data collection and transfer, insufficient information on third-party providers and payment service providers and the failure to carry out data protection impact assessments. The discrepancy between the data provided in the privacy policy and the actual data practices of the apps is particularly critical. In addition, the analysis shows considerable shortcomings in the handling of location data and biometric data as well as in the implementation of security measures such as multi-factor authentication. The thesis provides concrete recommendations for improving data protection practices, including the implementation of transparency tools, the development of specific data protection guidelines and the regular performance of data protection audits. By applying a risk-based approach and complying with the GDPR, app developers can better protect users’ privacy and avoid legal consequences. This research helps to raise awareness of data protection in app development and provide practical solutions for GDPR compliance.ausgeführt von: Jusreta JashariMasterarbeit Fachhochschule Technikum Wien 202

Airport privatization - does ownership matter? : a systematic literature review
This thesis investigates the effects of public, private, majority private, and minority private ownership models on the operational and financial performance of airports in Europe. It investigates the function of mediating factors like airport size, location, and regulation through a thorough literature review of 28 studies conducted between 2000 and 2025.
While results for smaller regional airports are mixed, findings indicate that full privatization can increase profitability and efficiency, particularly in larger airports. Although hybrid models like corporatization and PPPs are popular, their efficacy varies based on the quality of governance. By applying Radić et al.'s (2021) privatization framework, organizing disparate research, and identifying research gaps such as the need for additional data on long-term results and regulatory impacts the thesis contributes in this field of research.submitted by: Stach Valentin FrederikMasterarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
The thesis focuses on one of the most prominent and protracted political conflicts in Tyrol in the late 19th and early 20th century (1879–1918). This was the conflict between the “mild tone” and the “sharp tone”, the Christian-Socials and the Conservatives. This decade long conflict culminated in the establishment of the Christian-Social Party (1901) and the definitive schism of the catholic-conservative movement in Tyrol, which included the clergy, and was far more than a mere political and ideological dispute between individual politically influential players. It was a confrontation between different generations of politicians and different ideas of what “catholic” politics should look like, taken to the extreme with the help of the media. There was a fierce battle for both the favour and the mobilisation of the broad masses of the primarily rural population.
One of the main intentions of this work is to work out the multi-causal reasons that lead to the conflict and the division of the catholic-conservative faction in Tyrol - in particular the central, ambivalent role of the media.
This will be analysed on the basis of selected newspaper examples from the Christian-social and conservative environment, such as the “Brixner Chronik” and the “Neue Tiroler Stimmen”, which were oriented towards groundbreaking political events like regional elections and Reichsrat elections imperial council elections.
In general, the thesis is that the unmistakable, characteristic of this conflict - the high degree of virulence and the generally heated political atmosphere, which repeatedly prevented an early settlement - is largely due to the work of the newspapers.Elias Weißengruber, BADiplomarbeit Universität Innsbruck 202
