Intersecting Disparities: Food Insecurity on College Campuses

    Get PDF
As students who attend a small midwestern university, we have realized that food disparities and insecurity is an often-overlooked problem. Drawing on a broader dataset, we analyzed how students are affected by food insecurity. Investigators analyzed fifteen transcripts of student interviews, created a codebook and coded the interviews. In analyzing the codes, investigators focused on three central themes: the lack of awareness of resources on or near campus, the student strategies to mitigate food insecurity, and the dietary habits or restrictions that make finding adequate food more challenging

The Effects of Dynamic Versus Static Stretching on Lower Body Power

    Get PDF
Dynamic and static warmups have both been used to prepare for exercise and sport. Previous researchers indicate that dynamic stretching is the best warmup before performing exercise because it involves moving joints through their full range of motion throughout the stretch. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in dynamic stretching versus static stretching in an athlete’s lower body explosiveness. METHODS: A convenience sample of twelve physically active college students completed the study (age: 20.25 ± 0.75 years; height: 176.69 ± 8.09 cm; weight: 76.74 ± 17.92 kg; mean ± SD). Three participants identified as female and nine were male. Each participant performed three randomly assigned treatments on different testing days, a dynamic stretching warmup, static stretching warmup, as well as a control treatment of no stretching. The two warmups were focused on the same muscle groups. Vertical jump and standing broad jump were performed after each stretching warmup and the best score of two trials was recorded. Testing sessions were separated by at least 24 hours. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference between warmup treatments for standing broad jump measurements (F (2,22) = 1.783, p = 0.192). The warmups did significantly affect vertical jump measurements (F (2,22) = 3.515, p = .047). The dynamic stretching warmup resulted in significantly greater vertical jump than static stretching (mean difference = 0.858cm, p = 0.034). There was no significant difference between the static warmup and control (mean difference = 0.100cm, p = 0.752) nor between the dynamic warmup and control (mean difference = 0.758cm, p = 0.08). CONCLUSION: The dynamic warmup resulted in a greater vertical jump than a static warm up. Warm up type did not affect standing broad jump. These findings suggest that dynamic stretching may be desirable for greatest lower body explosiveness, especially vertical lower body power production

Using EMG Signals to Control an Arduino Prosthetic Arm

    Get PDF
A prosthetic serves as an artificial limb to improve the lifestyle of a person with limb loss. Myoelectric technology allows for advancements in prosthetics to look and function like body parts before amputation by using electrical signals from surrounding muscles to power motors controlling the prosthetic. With newer designs of prosthetics being myoelectric, this technology has the potential to be more accessible to those that uses prosthetics. This research looks to incorporate myoelectric technology into a 3D-printed prosthetic arm prototype through the use of electromyography (EMG) sensors and an Arduino microcontroller board

Peacebuilding, Liberian Women, and the Invisible Hand of Conflict in the Postwar Era

    Get PDF
Liberian women gained international acclaim for their courage and persistence in bringing warring factions into a peace agreement in 2003, after a 14-year-long civil war that devastated the country, with over 250,000 killed, millions displaced, and a population left traumatized and in political and economic ruin. This study explores the challenges that women have faced in the years following the civil war with a focus on whether the international community has supported women’s advancements in Liberia. We find that while some efforts to support gender mainstreaming have been helpful, there remain serious political, economic, and social inequalities that threaten both women’s peacebuilding and women’s general security and social mobility. In this essay we present a feminist framework for sustainable peace to address the visible and invisible arenas in which both physical and structural forms of violence continue in Liberia, threatening the peace on multiple levels. Among the issues commonly addressed—political corruption, the persistence of a culture of violence against women, and outbreaks of violence in local conflicts—we argue that the international community must also address the inequities and conflicts arising around extractive industries to support the best outcomes for women and for peace in Liberia
