Using Fad Diets to Teach Information Evaluation
In Spring 2021, the librarian presenters partnered with Laura Bauer, a Nutrition faculty member, to teach students in introductory Nutrition classes information evaluation skills. The instructor\u27s assignment originally asked the class of non-science major students to find a recipe online that met a personal nutrition goal based on current recommendations. The assignment evolved for a class of pre-health science students into an evaluative assignment where students were asked to research a fad diet online and compare those findings with the scholarly literature, all while considering diet culture through a social justice lens. In this session we\u27ll discuss how the librarians and professor collaborated to create an assignment that incorporated the learning objectives of the course into a real-life scenario where students would be expected to critically evaluate information. Over our two-part library instruction session with the pre-health science majors, we introduced two evaluation methods to students in the class: SIFT (Stop, Investigate the source, Find trusted coverage, Trace the claims) and TRAP (Timeliness, Relevance, Authority, Purpose). We will explain these evaluation techniques and how they can be applied to evaluate various types of information. We will also discuss our plans to incorporate the fad diet assignment into courses for non-science majors in the fall, replacing the more basic recipe assignment
Kura: prophetic messenger
In August 2020, Richard Bresnahan\u27s Kura: Prophetic Messenger became the first permanent installation of the Jon Hassler Sculpture Garden on the grounds of Saint John\u27s Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minnesota. Richard is the founder and director of the Saint John\u27s Pottery and for more than 40 years has served as artist-in-residence of Saint John\u27s University and the College of Saint Benedict. The intention of this book is to describe the people, thought processes, materials, and stories that compose the sculpture Kura: Prophetic Messenger. But even this is not complete, because the stories will go farther and have traveled further than we know. Kura: Prophetic Messenger is a teaching sculpture, with a message for the present and a deep well of care for the future --Jacket.https://digitalcommons.csbsju.edu/books/1000/thumbnail.jp
The Power, (Problem), and Potential of Prayer
This paper illuminates the complex and nuanced relationship between mental health and prayer, particularly seeking theologically grounded understandings of prayer and of our relationship with God in times of mental distress that goes beyond intercessory prayer. The paper begins with an evaluation of social structures that cause mental health problems (notably in college students). A discussion on emotional agility, scarcity, and vulnerability serves as a transition to examining this question from a theological perspective, the second main section of this paper. In this section, I claim that a misunderstanding of the divine-human relationship and of prayer is one potential source of harm for individuals in mental distress, and I outline an application of emotional agility and prayerful resilience as an alternative. My final main section is a pastoral response in light of the previous two sections
