Music and Sound in Weihsien Internment Camp in Japanese-occupied China
From the chapter\u27s Introduction:On 7 July 1937, Japanese forces based in Manchuria charged southward towards Beijing, invading north China and hence starting the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–45). On 7 December 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, transforming the Second Sino-Japanese War into the Pacific War. As a result of Pearl Harbor, the status of Allied citizens living in China at the time changed from neutral to ‘enemy aliens’. These Allied citizens included individuals and their families who worked in China as government officials, executives, engineers and Christian missionaries. They were forced into internment camps under the watchful eyes of the Japanese. At the end of 1942, the Japanese authorities decided to concentrate all ‘enemy aliens’ into larger camps. The chosen site for one such camp in north China was a Presbyterian mission compound called Ledao yuan (Courtyard of the Happy Way) in Weihsien (now Weixian) in Shandong Province. The Japanese referred to this site as the Weihsien Civilian Assembly Centre. From March 1943 to October 1945, anywhere between 1,500 and 2,000 foreign nationals were imprisoned in the camp. After the war, dozens of internees shared their experiences of imprisonment at Weihsien in memoirs, (auto) biographies and oral histories. Over thirty such accounts have been published, and there are many more unpublished accounts. This chapter taps into the large number of resources collected by internees and published through a digital memorial.
This chapter examines the distinctive auditory environments and music cultures that arose within the Weihsien Internment Camp and argues that the Weihsien internees forged a sense of belonging and community through their creative engagement with music and sound. […] The wide range of music-making and creativity displayed at Weihsien Internment Camp was similar to that which emerged in Nazi-controlled ghettos and labour camps across wartime Europe which have been examined by scholars in the field of Holocaust studies. The music analysed in this chapter includes three types: missionary music of faith, secular music of resilience and internees’ music of resistance

Grand Illuminations: Speaking from the Heart, Oh Rocks, Tell Us in Plain Words
Richardson will retire at the end of the spring semester after a distinguished career, one filled with legions of students who adored his Great Books and James Joyce courses, along with so many students who pursued Latin and Greek with him. This public lecture has the extra-special appeal of being his final lecture to the community, and appropriately, he will engage with some of his favorite themes and works of literature

The Phi Beta Kappa Society is the United States\u27 oldest and most prestigious academic honor society. Founded on December 5, 1776, at the College of William and Mary, the Society celebrates academic excellence and sponsors activities that promote education in the liberal arts and sciences. Each year, only about one college senior in a hundred is invited to join. Notable members of Phi Beta Kappa include 17 U.S. presidents, 42 Supreme Court Justices, and more than 150 Nobel Laureates.
Phi Beta Kappa currently has 290 chapters at leading colleges and universities nationwide. The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John\u27s University Theta of Minnesota Chapter was granted a charter in 2010. Each year, chapters select and invite exemplary students to become lifelong members of Phi Beta Kappa. The Faith of Jesus
According to Jon Sobrino, a theologian of Liberation Theology, Jesus has faith since He is a believer “like ourselves,” the model of faith, the one upon whom we have to keep our eyes fixed to live our faith. In another reference, Sobrino insists that “Jesus was an extraordinary believer and had faith. Faith is Jesus’ mode of being,” and “Faith describes the totality of the life of Jesus.” J. Sobrino’s view on Hebrews 12:2 does not conform with that of the Catholic traditional faith on the immediate and intimate relationship between Jesus and the Father. The essay is the arguments against Sobrino’s view, and then provide the sense of faith that should be understood for Jesus
Implementation of Staff Training Curriculum Aimed at Improving MDS Coding in a Long-Term Care Setting
Minimum Data Set (MDS) is used in long-term care facilities to document resident’s information and assessments and to determine the resident’s eligibility to receive Medicare or Medicaid insurance coverage for treatment expenses while in the LTC facility. When reviewing the MDS, the facility identified inaccurate documentation of the resident’s functional mobility ambulating on the unit. This quality improvement project was undertaken to improve assessments, resident interventions, and documentation regarding functional mobility. Following literature review and chart audits, an educational intervention was implemented for nursing assistants to promote understanding of the MDS coding system when charting functional mobility on the unit. The educational intervention included information on coding for the level of staff assistance and accurate charting of assistance levels. Following the education intervention data was again collected through chart review on MDS coding to determine effectiveness of the intervention. The goal of this project was to create more accurate MDS documentation and ultimately improve resident independence while ambulating on the unit in this long-term care facility
