    Gigapan® Photogrammetry For Outcrop Description, 3d Modeling, And 3d Printing

    The collection of 3D information on geological media is fundamental for field geology, however it can be both time consuming and expensive. This report proposes a new method for the collection of 3D information of outcrops using simple to use and inexpensive technology. GigaPan® systems can be used to take high resolution images of outcrops and these images then be either left in 2D for additional description of the outcrop in the lab, or they can be processed in Autodesk 3ds Max® to create realistic 3D models of the outcrops which can then be 3D printed. The collection of this data can allow for maximization of field time and may allow for additional analysis and descriptions in the lab. The ability to visit or revisit an outcrop without physically going there has implications for facilitating collaborative research projects and improving the learning outcomes of students

    Bathymetry Based Modeling of Subaxial Magma Flows Under the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 0 to 30° N

    Fracture patterns of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) provide evidence of tectonic forces related to divergence and magma upwelling at the ridge axis. In this study, we focus on the MAR from 0 to 30° N, where the N-S ridge exhibits slow spreading rates (2-4 cm/yr) and pronounced axial topography. Ridge segments and transform faults identified in bathymetry data were analyzed for strike orientation and axial depth profiles. Azimuths of transform faults and ridge segments exhibit increasing clockwise rotation with latitude, and all have left lateral displacement. Bathymetric sampling along ridge segments occurred at 9 km intervals with 20 km sampling radii, producing axial lithostatic pressure gradients. One-dimensional magma flows parallel to the ridge axis at 10 and 50 km depths were modeled using Darcy’s law based on published parameters and calculated gradients. Subaxial magma velocities of up to 4 cm/yr were predicted for horizontal flow at depth and are comparable in magnitude to upwelling rates in published literature. Average flow magnitudes (n = 422) within the melt generation region are predicted at 0.8 and 0.2 cm/yr for 10 and 50 km depths respectively. Flow velocities up to five times higher are expected with this model in the high-porosity boundary layer below the solidus. The Coriolis parameter would affect the movement of the flows predicted by our model and may be linked to rotational patterns observed at the MAR. Future research of magma migration below divergent margins would benefit from incorporating axial lithostatic load variations as a driver of flow

    Target of GLUT4 Regulating Protein TUG-UBL1 to Treat Insulin Resistant Type Two Diabetes

    Type two diabetes mellitus is a highly prevalent disease for which the mechanism of insulin signaling to initiate glucose uptake in cleaving TUG-UBL1 by the protease Usp25m is currently not well understood. As increased insulin resistance can lead to the development of type one insulin deficient diabetes, the knowledge of this pathway may uncover underlying causes of insulin resistance. This research aims to understand the effect and stoichiometry of Usp25m binding to TUG-UBL1 in relationship to the cleavage of TUG-UBL1 initiating translocation of GLUT4 glucose transporter. The action of protease effector PIST will be investigated to understand the importance of order in protein presence to initiate TUG-UBL1 cleavage. The mechanism of PIST action on TUG-UBL1 Usp25m protease will be elucidated to understand the cascade of insulin signaling effects on glucose uptake. The understanding of this mechanism will allow for investigation of this mechanism in relationship to a novel therapeutic pathway in insulin resistant diabetes treatment. Current diabetes medications do not directly impact the cellular uptake of glucose but negate the negative symptoms of insulin resistance, while a therapeutic targeting this cleavage pathway can bypass insulin stimulation to reduce increased insulin resistance. The specific description of this mechanism allows for therapeutic small molecule investigations to stimulate or replace PIST action on Usp25m to artificially trigger glucose uptake for diabetes treatment

    The Fierce Urgency of the Slow: How Pope Francis is Calling Us to Save the Planet

    Addressing the urgent issues facing humanity today, in his recent encyclical on social friendship, Fratelli Tutti, Pope Francis reminds us that it is “all the more urgent that we rethink our styles of life, our relationships, the organization of our societies and, above all, the meaning of our existence” (no. 33). In this and in his previous encyclical on care for creation, Laudato Si’, Francis makes clear that we do not have a moment to waste. None of his diagnosis should “be read as a cool and detached description of today’s problems” (no. 56). Before an onslaught of urgency backfires in paralysis, however, we might notice a heartening paradox: Read carefully, Francis’s message to us is that we move quickly to slow down! Yes, “rethink” immediately. Yes, act now, and “boldly.” But then, once we have promptly changed direction, Francis insists that we take all the time we need. After all, what we most urgently need is to do the hard work of truly human encounter on the way to authentically human solutions. We might call this “the fierce urgency of the slow.

    This paper studies Marin Luther King, Jr.’s and Desmond Tutu’s strivings for justice and reconciliation as the leaders of movements against white racist systems in the US and South Africa. Despite their differences in terms of nationality, age, religious denomination, and geography, the paper demonstrates how King’s and Tutu’s quests were grounded in the distinctive communal ethics informed by their Christian faith and their shared spiritual heritage as African peoples, which emphasize community, the ubiquity of religion, the moral order of the universe, and hopefulness. Contrasting their communal approach to a secular rational ethical approach to justice and peace, the paper explores their ongoing moral relevance in the globalizing world
