Magnesium Sulfate as an Anesthesia Adjunct: Establishing Opportunities for Enhancing Outcomes of Care
Magnesium sulfate can be utilized as an analgesic adjunct for patients undergoing surgery. It can lead to decreased postoperative pain scores, improved patient outcomes, better perioperative care, and it can curb the current opioid crisis. When administered as an analgesic adjunct, the sole reliance on opioids to manage perioperative pain is reduced therefore the associated adverse effects of opioids are also minimized. Magnesium Sulfate effectively provides pain relief for a multitude of different surgical populations, is relatively easy to administer, and is inexpensive. It works as an analgesic by noncompetitively blocking NMDA receptors as well as acting as a calcium channel blocker. A formal educational webinar was provided to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) that are members of the Michigan Association of Nurse Anesthetists (MANA). The purpose of the webinar was to inform providers of the mechanism of action, efficacy, and benefits of intravenous magnesium sulfate as an opioid sparing analgesic adjunct in select surgical scenarios. A post-webinar evaluation was distributed to webinar attendees and their respective responses were evaluated. Overall, CRNAs responded positively and provided comments that the webinar was extremely informational permitted a greater understanding of the benefits to enhance patient care outcomes
A Case Study of the Role of Universal Design for Learning in Impacting Teacher Professional Development and Instructional Design
Educators continue to try to address the many different learning styles, disabilities, and intelligences of the students who enter their classroom. With each new year, the ask of our teachers becomes greater. Consequently, designing instruction from the start that addresses the many differences found in a classroom is a challenge for educators. Therefore, professional development centered around creating a flexible learning environment that reaches many types of learners has become the new expectation. The purpose of this mixed method case study was to understand the impact of professional development using the Universal Design for Learning framework on changing teacher practices, and thereby increasing perceived student engagement at three local middle schools. The findings of this study were analyzed through the lens of four data sources: Teacher Focus Groups, Teacher Lesson Plans, Teacher Formative Assessments - Understanding the Role of Lesson Design, and the Technology Usage Perception Survey. My study revealed the challenges that teachers had with identifying students unique learning needs and shows the importance of schools having a systemic learning framework. Teachers understood the importance of student engagement and good instructional design; however, designing the lessons to create a learner-centered classroom required them to completely rethink their lesson design process. This study concludes with recommendations for redesigning professional development, job embedded coaching, and systemic implementation of the UDL framework within a school district
FASB Revenue Recognition ASU 2014-09: Impact on the Software Industry
Revenue recognition standard ASU 2014-09 was issued by FASB to provide clearer guidance and improve how revenue is reported on financial statements. This has significantly impacted several industries, especially the software industry. It is discussed what FASB sought to change by issuing ASU 2014-09, and why ASU 2014-09 was issued. Software companies face significant challenges regarding revenue, so the new standard significantly impacted them. In addition, there was an analysis done regarding whether the standard helped provide better quality information for users of software companies’ financial statements. Both professional research and the financial statements of two software companies were analyzed to determine this information. It was discovered ASU 2014-09 has ultimately improved the recognition of revenue for software companies by providing better quality information for users of financial statements, as the benefits of a consistent framework for revenue recognition outweigh the drawbacks of the potential for more aggressive revenue recognition
Association Between Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Hypertension
Hypertension is growing more prevalent in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
than in the general population. Because of the linked association between OSA and hypertension, patients are at an increased risk for stroke, heart failure, and premature death. The proposed study will explore the bidirectional relationship between OSA and hypertension, and the epidemiologic factors that are responsible for their correlation. The project will examine current methods regarding the treatment of high blood pressure in OSA patients, and it will discover other mechanisms that may be promising for treatment and abolishing apneas. The expected results of the project will allow healthcare professionals to have a better understanding of the link from OSA to hypertension and the preferred route of treating OSA so that hypertension and its related morbidities can be prevented. All patients that are currently diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and have hypertension, as well as those with OSA who may be at risk for developing hypertension, will benefit from the findings of this project

Saudi Parents’ Perspective on the Role of Social Media Platforms in Promoting Parenting Knowledge
The purpose of this research was to assess social media, and specifically a podcast entitled Consultation with Sarah, as a source for parents obtaining knowledge about children’s development, and to consider the factors that influence the use of social media to acquire knowledge on parenting in Saudi Arabia. The questions inquired about sources of information Saudi parents perceive as beneficial for learning about parenting, and which factors, such as gender, age, number of children, marital status, education, and employment status, are related to knowledge seeking behaviors. The research questions also sought to understand if there was a difference reported by Saudi parents who use social media for parenting knowledge before the COVID-19 pandemic. The Using Social Media for Parental Knowledge Survey was distributed to 353 Saudi parents. A mixed method survey design was used, as the survey included both multiple choice and open-ended questions. SPSS was used for quantitative data analysis. Findings indicated websites and social media were the two most common sources parents utilized to obtain parenting information. Results also indicated there were differences in knowledge seeking or reported parental knowledge based on gender, age of parents, marital status, education level, and employment status. Findings also indicated there was a statistically significant difference in respondents’ use of social media before COVID-19, although there was not a difference with regard to Consultation with Sarah. Finally, the results suggested listening to the Consultation with Sarah podcast made a significant difference in parenting knowledge, and there was a statistically significant difference reported by parents or caregivers who listened to the Consultation with Sarah podcast. The qualitative findings shed light on the reasonings behind the relationships. These findings may provide valuable information for parents, caregivers, podcast leaders, influencers, and educators
Identifying Best Cancer Management Strategies for Undeveloped Nations: A Literary Review
Today, cancer research is often done in developed nations in expensive labs thanks to funding from wealthy donors. However, cancer is a global disease and is expected to become much more prevalent in undeveloped nations, due to severe lack of medical infrastructure and properly trained personnel. Given the limited resources available in undeveloped countries, more
research is needed to find effective cancer management tools which don’t require a hospital or expensive medical equipment. These treatments must also be easy to administer to patients as the medical training in these nations isn’t the same as developed countries. By finding more cost-effective treatment options for underdeveloped countries, developed nations can also use them in poorer communities to help alleviate the burden of costly medical treatments. Through the review of literature on global cancer prevalence and the various treatment options available in different countries, I hope to highlight where specific cancers are expected to be most prevalent and guide research towards finding treatments that can be effective in those areas given resource availability. Additionally, as new cancer treatments are developed they should be designed to work in areas where the cancer it is treating will be most common. Together, this information should help guide countries to make smarter decisions in regards to how they can best improve cancer management for their people
