    Social Disorganization in West Chicago: How crack cocaine sentencing disparities are linked to social disorganization in West Chicago.

    This study compares community social disorganization caused by excessive incarceration in two communities of West and North Chicago. This study attempts to confirm the hypothesis that African American communities will experience higher instances in crime and lower economic growth rates than majority white neighborhoods, because of the inequitably enforcement of crack cocaine mandatory minimum sentencing. This study expects that the majority African American community of West Chicago should experience larger levels of social disorganization than North Chicago a primarily white area of the city

    Correlating Cosmic-Ray Electrons and Positrons in Search of Spectral Features from Pulsars

    In recent years, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) on-board the International Space Station has provided unprecedented precision measurements of the electron and positron cosmic-ray fluxes in the 0.5 GeV to 1 TeV energy range. At the lower energies cosmic-ray secondary positrons dominate the flux, while at higher energies a new type of source becomes important. If that source is energetic local pulsars, they are expected to contribute to both the cosmic-ray positron and electron fluxes. This would result in features in their respective spectra that would coincide in energy; which we search for. We first fit the individual fluxes with parametrically smooth spectra to identify the significance of such features on either the electrons or the positrons and evaluate their respective residual fluxes. We then perform a cross-correlation analysis on the residual fluxes to see if their features are related and report our results

    Investigations Of Magnetic/Electric Field Control Of Magnetization Of Ferromagnetic And Multiferroics

    The shortcomings of contemporary complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technologies include increased power consumption, scalability, volatility, and device variability. New materials and novel devices are being investigated in this regard. Spintronic devices, which are normally based on magnetic materials, store and process data based on the modes of electron spins, rather than the presence or absence of charges as in the CMOS, are one possible approach. Numerous potential advantages of spintronic devices include its quick operational speed, low power requirement, and non-volatility. Two ferromagnetic materials suitable for creating spintronic devices are investigated in his dissertation study. Material properties, techniques for regulating the magnetization of materials, with both magnetic and electrical fields, and the development of devices useful for use in frequency modulations are all respectively detailed.The first section of this dissertation studies the magnetically-induced transparence (MIT) effect in Y3Fe5O12 (YIG)/Permalloy (Py) coupled bilayers. The measurement is achieved via a heterodyne detection of the coupled magnetization dynamics using a single wavelength that probes the magneto-optical Kerr and Faraday effects of Py and YIG, respectively. Clear features of the MIT effect are evident from the deeply modulated ferromagnetic resonance of Py due to the perpendicular-standing-spin-wave of YIG. We develop a phenomenological model that nicely represents the experimental results including the induced amplitude and phase evolution caused by the magnon-magnon coupling. This work offers a new route towards studying phase-resolved spin dynamics and hybrid magnonic systems. The second part of this dissertation discusses the research on the hexaferrite material, Zn2Y, and the prospect of controlling its magnetic characteristics by applying a dc voltage, which is akin to a bias electric field. The detection and investigation of the magnetoelectric (ME) effect for in-plane currents orthogonal to the hexagonal axis in single crystal and thin films of Zn2Y grown via liquid phase epitaxy. By applying a dc voltage, tuning of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) was achieved in the hexaferrites. In addition to the frequency shift caused by the electrical tuning, magnetic properties of the material as a function of the input tuning power was also studied

    An Interactive Ecosystem of Music Learning: Individual Learning in Small Group Contexts in a Music Classroom

    In this qualitative study, I explored the relationships between individual and group learning in the context of music ensembles in the classroom. I sought to understand how groups and individuals construct and develop identities and search for power in this context and how the self-esteem, efficacy, and productivity of groups and individuals may be related. As a teacher-researcher (Kincheloe, 2003) in an interactive, interconnected multi-age, constructivist learning environment (Brooks & Brooks, 2001; Fosnot, 1996; Wiggins, 2015) where learners and groups of learners were encouraged to share ideas and knowledge, I examined the musical community from multiple perspectives; focusing separately on the entire school community, small musical ensembles, and individual learners. The relationships among these perspectives, and the experiences of these individuals and groups were the primary focus of this study. Data consisted of extant videos, audio recordings, teacher observation notes, and informal interviews, and were analyzed through a process of identifying and categorizing emergent themes. The findings of this study enabled me to conceptualize the entire musical community at the school as a constantly evolving ecosystem in which every individual and group was influenced by the evolution of the entire ecosystem, and the evolution of the entire ecosystem was influenced by every individual and group. Through this lens, musical groups and musical communities are seen as cohesive and developing entities separate from, and interacting with the individuals who constitute them. Further, I found that ideas, understandings, resources, and innovations resided within the ecosystem and that a robust, multi-perspective awareness of the ecosystem, both in its entirety and of its individual parts, by the learners and music teacher, positively influenced self-efficacy, creativity, development, and growth
