    Eliciting Post-Activation Potentiation Using Blood Flow Restriction Technique: A Preliminary Look

    Post-activation potentiation (PAP) describes a phenomenon that occurs in muscles that is commonly used to achieve maximum performance of a power-based movement, such as a vertical jump. PAP is traditionally achieved through physiological mechanisms that occur from high load, biomechanically similar exercise, completed before the power movement intended to be maximized. Blood flow restriction (BFR) is a training method wherein a pressure cuff is used to occlude blood flow to a limb during exercise. PAP has been studied extensively, though limited research has introduced a convenient way to make PAP accessible to athletes for immediate performance improvement. BFR resistance training with low-load has been shown to mimic the training effects of high-load resistance exercise. Current research combining the use of BFR to elicit PAP is very limited and needs to be examined further. It is theorized that BFR may be able to induce PAP by means of its simulation of high-load resistance exercise. Recreationally trained individuals may also benefit from this for personal use and may display a different PAP response. Methods: The proposed study investigates PAP effects on vertical jump height, following the completion of body weight (BW) squats with BFR among recreationally and competitively trained individuals. In two separate sessions participants completed BW squats with and without BFR, allowing participant characteristics to be controlled. Vertical jump height (VJH) was measured before and after each condition using a Vertical Challenger Jump Unit. Jump gain (JG) was calculated by subtracting the pre-squat VJH from the post-squat VJH and compared using a 2-factor with replication ANOVA. Results: No significant differences in jump gain were found. Conclusion: The results indicate less promising ability of BFR to elicit PAP, however, further investigation is needed

    “Places of Such Towering Misery”: The History of the Institutionalization of Disabled People and Deinstitutionalization

    Throughout the 20th century, hundreds of thousands of disabled people (or people considered to be disabled by society) in America were institutionalized. Institutionalization is the process of placing disabled people in large, state-run facilities where they are typically isolated from their communities and do not have control over their lives. Institutionalization occurred because of the belief that disabled people needed to be separated from society and that they could be treated or cured in institutions. In many institutions people were abused and neglected which caused them severe harm. Because of the abusive conditions of institutions many disabled people supported deinstitutionalization, which occurred from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. They helped to bring about deinstitutionalization through their efforts to destigmatize disability, activism, work to create independent living communities, and participation in lawsuits against institutions

    Process Optimization of Autoclave Bonded Light-Weight Material Joints

    This dissertation research fills a gap in the existing open literature regarding the significance of autoclave cure process variables and their interactions on the static strength of lightweight material single lap joints under tensile-shear loading. Specifically, the research investigates the dependence between the degree of cure of the epoxy adhesive and the mechanical performance of the single lap joint boded with same epoxy adhesive. Lightweight material system includes polycarbonate, Aluminum 6061 and glass reinforced plastics (GFRP) extren 500. A commercially available polyurethane film adhesive PE399 was selected to bond Polycarbonate single lap joints (SLJ) while epoxy film adhesive AF163-2K was selected to bond aluminum and GFRP joints. Studied variables include cure temperature, cure pressure and their respective rates as well as the duration of cure time. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) is used to quantify glass transition temperature of AF163-2K cured with different combinations of autoclave process variables. The relative significance of variables and variable combinations are investigated for their effect on the bond strength. Experimental test data shows interaction between autoclave variable cure temperature in combination with cure time, temp ramp rate and pressure ramp rate have significant effect on glass transition temperature, bond strength and failure mode. Changes in joint static load transfer capacity (LTC) was investigated after cyclic temperature profile fluctuates between 20° C and 85° C at a constant relative humidity (RH) level of 85 %

    Mass Incarceration: Evaluating Health Disparities Among Minority Offenders Pre- and Post- COVID-19

    Mass incarceration has exacerbated pre-existing health disparities and spread of COVID-19 within U.S. correctional facilities. African American, Latinx, and Indigenous communities disproportionately endure these consequences (Kuper & Turanvoic, 2020; Nowotny & Kuptsevych-Timmer, 2018; Ostler, 2020; Yancy, 2020, as cited in Farr, 2021). Although prior research addresses the relationship between mass incarceration and associated disparities, there is little research on the relationship between race, health disparities, and COVID-19. This systematic literature review fills the gap by comparing racial health disparities before and after the emergence of COVID-19. Synthesizing literatures on mass incarceration, race, health, and COVID-19, this review discusses relevant theories and empirical findings concerning the relationship between mass incarceration and health disparities. Without immediate action by U.S. criminal justice authorities to combat new COVID-19 cases and deaths, the health of racial minorities will be significantly impacted (American Civil Liberties Union, 2020, as cited in Bradshaw, 2021)
