Visual Representation of Computer System Cache Hierarchy
The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the component in a computer system that carries
out all the computations and calculations that are required. Because of this, good CPU
performance is key in having a fast computer. To ensure good performance, processor designers
often implement an internal cache that works like a hierarchy, with small amounts of very fast
storage closest to the processing core, and large amounts of slower storage furthest from the core.
Such a hierarchical design takes advantage of spatial locality, which says that if a piece of data is
used, the surrounding data is likely to be used, and temporal locality, the likelihood that if a piece
of data is used once, it will be used again.
Descriptions of the cache hierarchy can be confusing without models or diagrams. Such
visual aids are made all the time, yet they can often be difficult to interpret without prior
knowledge, which is a problem for those who have an interest in learning about computer
architecture. Our program will serve as a visual representation of the cache hierarchy and will
help fill the gap of visual cache representations that display pertinent information with clear
visual distinctions between the cache levels
Disability Representation in Children’s Books
This project has explored storytelling through the works of a creative visual project. It is
used and developed in order to answer the question of how one could write and create a
children’s book that accurately focuses on the topic of children with disabilities. This creative
project explored several different areas that included visual elements such as world-building,
character design, all with the support of storytelling. An important factor that was considered
through the process of this project was avoiding harmful stereotypes that can be found in books
on this topic. The hope for this project now that it is completed is that children will be able to see
themselves accurately represented in a book designed specifically for them. The focus of the
story in this project was creating an accurate tale of a child with disabilities that does not fall into
harmful tropes and to properly educate other children while entertaining them. The most
important goal was to have created a piece of literature that is both visually appealing as well as
sensitive to the topics at hand in support of the intended audience
Scholarly Communication Services: From an Island, You Can Build Bridges
In 2012, my library reorganized to align with a new strategic plan. As a result, my position
changed and I needed a new job title. My dean suggested scholarly communication librarian,
to which I had a strong reaction. “What on earth does scholarly communication even
mean?” After some discussion, we settled on faculty research support librarian, agreeing that
it more clearly communicated my role to campus. I was tasked with developing services for
assisting faculty throughout the research life cycle. I didn’t have a department or even a group
of other librarians who also embraced this work. It was just me on my island, and it wasn’t a
sunny tropical island but a medium-sized Midwest public university library with not enough
librarians (thirteen) to serve the growing student population (now 20,000), let alone over
500 faculty. My acquired competencies for this position at this point included some basic
expertise in copyright, I had recently served as open access track lead for a regional teaching
conference where I also presented on institutional repositories, and I was the author of two
peer-reviewed articles. I thought back to four years earlier when I was assigned to support
the School of Nursing and the School of Health Sciences with no corresponding experience
beyond having been a patient. To alleviate my sense of impostor syndrome, I completed
every continuing education course I could find on evidence-based medicine, PubMed, and
systematic reviews. Fortunately, many courses were free and my administration financed the
cost when there was a fee.
With my new title in hand, I set forth, sometimes deliberately and sometimes fortuitously,
to develop my skills and knowledge. Reflecting on this eight-year journey, the following
themes emerge
PTEN Deficiency in Intestinal Epithelial Cells Inhibits Autophagy by Suppressing YKT6 Expression
Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) has long been considered to be a tumor-suppressing gene. Therefore, when PTEN is inhibited, it causes tumorigenesis. However, emerging evidence suggests that PTEN deficiency alone does not cause tumorigenesis in the intestine. Thus, the crucial role of PTEN in the intestine remains elusive. Autophagy is a pathway of cellular waste clearance in the intestine by degrading intracellular waste, such as misfolded proteins. Therefore, autophagy is thought of as a survival mechanism and plays a key role in preventing countless diseases; autophagy inhibition ultimately results in cell death.
As preliminary data, it was found that a loss of the PTEN gene suppressed the expression of YKT6 in the intestinal epithelial cells (DLD-1). YKT6 is an R-soluble NSF attachment receptor (SNARE) protein that mediates the fusion between autophagosomes and lysosomes. While various mechanisms take place as a function of autophagy, proper lysosome function is crucial to regulate the process. Because autophagosome-lysosome fusion is required for matured autophagy, impaired YKT6 expression inhibits autophagy. Therefore, it is hypothesized that PTEN deficiency inhibits autophagy maturation through YKT6 suppression, leading to cell death. To test this hypothesis, the expression of YKT6 was examined in both control and PTEN-knockdown (KD) intestinal epithelial cells. By elucidating the role of YKT6, we hope to further the understanding of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and colorectal cancer
