    Democratic Views in Islamist Groups

    Islamist groups do not have the greatest reputation among supporters of democracy as they are typically seen as anti-democratic. While there are a plethora of Islamist groups that oppose democracy, there are some that see the appeal in at least a few aspects of democracy. The question then becomes: why do some Islamist groups support democracy more than others? In an attempt to answer the question, this paper provides a unifying definition of Islamism that allows the reader to understand what Islamists’ goals are, and what most Islamist groups have in common with each other to fit under the term “Islamism.” Furthermore, a minimalist description of democracy that highlights elections over measures of normative values will be defined to properly measure Islamist support or opposition towards democracy. The paper also highlights which Islamic symbols Islamists borrow from to justify their views of democracy. By using both a “most similar systems design” and a “most different systems design,” Islamist groups are compared based on their ideologies and views of democracy in order to find out how, and why these Islamist groups vary in their views of democracy

    Conference proceedings paperCritical information literacy and transformative learning theory grow from the same roots: Both are founded in examinations of power structures, critiques of cultural systems, and aims of emancipation. However, librarians haven’t considered whether transformative learning theory can support critical practices in our teaching, nor have we explored how critical library instruction can shape our own transformative experiences around who we are as educators. In this conference paper, I connect these complementary theoretical approaches to consider our instructional identities in more critical ways, create conditions where students may experience perspective transformation, and provide pathways for true and meaningful praxis

    Transcription is important for gene expression and is a tightly-controlled process involving multiple mechanisms of regulation, including regulation by chromatin structure. Chromatin consists of nucleosomes, which are comprised of DNA wrapped around histone proteins. Chromatin remodelers such as the Remodels the Structure of Chromatin (RSC) complex play important roles in controlling DNA accessibility to the transcriptional machinery and organizing chromatin throughout the genome. Mutations in yeast and mammalian RSC orthologs have been linked to dysregulated cell cycle progression, chromosome segregation, stress response, and developmental processes. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms by which RSC associates with chromatin on a genome-wide scale and the impact of disrupted RSC-chromatin interactions on transcription. Previous studies have suggested that nucleosome acetylation via histone acetyltransferases (HATs) may facilitate RSC binding to chromatin. To explore this, we examined the effects of removing HATs Gcn5 and Esa1 on RSC occupancy. Surprisingly, our results revealed distinct effects of HAT loss on RSC occupancy at promoters and gene bodies. In promoters, the loss of HATs increased RSC association with promoter nucleosomes, particularly in promoters containing partially-unwrapped fragile nucleosomes. Additionally, we found that HAT-mediated acetylation is crucial for maintaining nucleosome depletion at promoters. Conversely, HAT loss decreased RSC occupancy in gene bodies of highly transcribed genes. This reduction in RSC binding was dependent on histone tails, as cells lacking these tails also showed a significant loss of RSC binding to gene bodies. High-resolution mapping and analyses demonstrated that RSC-bound nucleosomes, particularly in gene bodies, were highly accessible. Consistent with these findings, loss of HAT functions resulted in widespread transcriptional changes, impacting both transcription initiation and elongation. This work provides valuable insights into how HAT-mediated histone modifications regulate RSC association with chromatin and the consequent impact on global transcription

    The Impact of Writing Center Consultations on Writing Self-Efficacy

    This study sought to determine the impact writing center consultations have on student writing self-efficacy and to illuminate effective consultant strategies for fostering student writing confidence. As part of a multi-method study, a survey was administered for students to reflect upon and to assess their feelings of writing self-efficacy by describing experiences in writing center consultations. Selected respondents were asked to elaborate on the strategies used by their peer consultant(s) in an optional open-ended interview. Findings suggest that writing center consultations help increase writing self-efficacy. The effective consultant strategies described by study participants are synthesized into an overarching consultant framework of empathy-based tutoring, which includes four key consultant moves that work to foster writing self-efficacy, which are listening, translating, advising, and motivating. Results from this study have implications for further consultant training and/or professional development programs and reaffirms the value writing centers bring to student writing growth

    Macron, Trump, and Biden: Shaping French Foreign Policy with the U.S. from 2016-2022

    This thesis will examine French foreign policy towards the United States starting in 2016 through early 2022, considering the entirety of Emmanuel Macron’s presidency in France, and spanning both the Trump and Biden administrations in the United States. The first goal of this investigation is to understand the primary directions of French foreign policy towards the U.S. The second is to establish who in France is primarily responsible for determining foreign policy towards the U.S. The third is to examine whether France’s behavior changes when working with a Republican or Democrat administration within the U.S. This research will aid academia, as part of an effort to provide a better understanding of French foreign policy towards the U.S., while also providing U.S. decision makers with information on what drives French foreign policy and whether the ideology of the U.S. President matters

    Discrete Functionalization of Resorcinarenes for Applications in Supramolecular Chemistry

    Resorcinarenes are three-dimensional cyclic oligomers obtained by acid-catalyzed condensation between resorcinol and an appropriate aldehyde. This doctoral thesis research presents basic and translational research studies that demonstrate the versatile functionalization and applications of the resorcinarene macrocycle. In chapter one, this thesis introduces macrocyclic chemistry with a brief reflection on the history of the science and Beyeh Lab’s use of the resorcinarene macrocycle in supramolecular chemistry. Chapter two presents a fundamental study of cooperativity in non-covalent interactions using a resorcinarene as an anchor to a guest in a solution that restricts its free rotation in the solution. Chapter three explores the molecular recognition potential of functionalized resorcinarenes as sensors for ammonium cations and pyrophosphate anions. Last, chapter four presents functionalized water-soluble resorcinarenes as aggregation inhibitors for peptides that cause eye cataracts. These applications are all realized through the persistent hydrophobic cavity inherent in the basic resorcinarene cavitand and the synthetic functionalization of the macrocyclic ring, which underscores the versatile use of resorcinarene compounds in supramolecular chemistry

    Building a Better Accounting World with Artificial Intelligence

    This thesis’s purpose is to explore how the emergence of artificial intelligence in accounting shifts the focus and daily tasks and responsibilities of accountants. The project will also explore the impact that these new advancements in artificial intelligence will have in the accounting world in areas such as document management and bookkeeping. From artificial intelligence implications, the immediate and future impacts of these shifts in technologies will become present and utilized to enhance the field in the right direction. Through the implementation of artificial intelligence, new knowledge is uncovered that will enhance the everyday tasks of an accountant such as bookkeeping and journalizing entries. This enhancement will allow the focus of accountants to shift to more advisory services and other high-value tasks. The methodology used will be exploratory content from individuals from accounting firms and scholarly peer-reviewed journals through the Oakland University Libraries database. This methodology will be obtained through primary sources and secondary research. The results of this research will aim to provide knowledge to those currently in the field or those becoming part of the field, so they stay ahead of the game and competition to stay employed. Current accountants or people who plan on graduating soon as accountants will benefit from this thesis to stay an asset to their current or future company by being technologically advanced and advancing the company technologically for the evolving future
