    Moving Vulnerable Kernel Logic Into User Space

    Programs which run at ring zero are a security risk. Moving code into user space can mitigate this risk. As a demonstration, a simple kernel module with vulnerable logic was used as a control case. This module was capable of targeted data exfiltration from the kernel. It was shown that moving the application logic into user space decreased the severity of the vulnerability. Furthermore, rewriting the user space program in Guile – a very high-level language – removed the vulnerability entirely

    NOVEL AUTOMOTIVE ANTENNA DESIGNS UTILIZING CHARACTERISTIC MODE ANALYSIS

    The Theory of Characteristic Modes (TCM) provides a valuable method for antenna analysis. It helps decompose the total radiation into a set of orthogonal radiation modes. Each mode exhibits a unique reaction in terms of its current distribution and radiation pattern. TCM has proven helpful in numerous antenna design applications, such as enhancing radiation patterns, decoupling antennas, increasing bandwidth, and achieving input impedance match.This study aims to apply characteristic mode analysis (CMA) to address automotive antenna design challenges. The work involves synthesizing and controlling the desired radiation characteristic mode (CM) at the intended frequency range to achieve an excellent radiation pattern for automotive applications. The study focuses on practical antenna design for the newly defined 5G-sub 6GHz cellular bands in the 0.617-5 GHz range and its cooperation with other coexisting wireless antennas for other wireless functions

    A Post Institution Society: Adapting Respite for Caregivers of People with SMI

    Serious mental illnesses, or SMI, are illnesses that are debilitating and impact the activities of daily life (Whitney et al., 2015). Many of these people with SMI require caregiving which places quite a burden on the caregiver, especially since after deinstitutionalization. Respite care models have been found to be effective in other areas so this research will further address how these existing respite care models can be adapted for future SMI respite care. Background research was conducted on the role of deinstituonalization in shifting the care of people with SMI from institutions to families. As well as the prevalence of mental illness today, the increase in caregiving, what respite care programs have been effective so far, the current barriers to implementing respite care, and the overall importance as to why respite care should be further adapted for specific SMI respite care. An integrative literature review was conducted using online databases and keywords to fill in the gaps of the lack of best practices and curriculum surrounding SMI respite care. The review will look into if existing respite care models can be used to adapt future respite care for caregivers of people with serious mental illnesses. The results found that the similarities among caregiving across illnesses, needs of caregivers, existing respite care models, and best practices on behavioral crisis care show that SMI respite care can be further adapted and point out the lack of clear best practices of SMI respite care. These findings can lead into further development of these SMI respite care best practices, information dissemination on respite resources, longitudinal studies of respite care, and more needs assessments of SMI caregivers. Some limits of the review were finding articles with just SMI statistics and not AMI (any mental illness). Another limitation is some data found being outside of the US and that the results of the theory are subjective. This research will address the need for competency and emphasize the value of service in social work practice by finding literature that can contribute to best practices for SMI respite care to attempt to reduce the burdens of SMI caregivers

    Modeling Extreme Insurance Losses Using Transmutation and Copula

    In this dissertation, we apply transmutation to the theoretical work in insurance. From our extensive literature search, this seems to be a novel piece of work with regards to the transmutation, we particularly focus on the theoretical application of the exponential, Pareto and Weibull distributions. By shedding light on this unexplored area, our findings contribute valuable insights into the broader domain of insurance studies. We also do some exploratory work with regard to future research pursuit on a combined application of copula and transmutation to insurance data

    Induced Methylation of the KITLG as a Treatment for Hippocampal Degeneration in Bipolar Disorder

    This article is an examination of the literature regarding bipolar disorder and our understanding of it. Specifically, a focus is placed on the biological symptoms associated with bipolar disorder and their impact on the hippocampus. Through this research, a new genetic component will be introduced as a link between bipolar disorder and hippocampal degeneration. It appears that methylation of a specific ligand that mediates the stress response can be used as a treatment for the neurotoxic effects of cortisol. By reducing the high levels of cortisol found in those with bipolar disorder, brain damage to the hippocampus may be reduced. This treatment could be performed through induced methylation of the proposed ligand

    Modeling and Control of Heat Transfer in a Single Vertical Ground Heat Exchanger for a Geothermal Heat Pump System

    The Ground Heat Exchanger (GHE) is regarded as the most critical component of a Geothermal Heat Pump System (GHPS) due to its direct contact with the Earth and ability to benefit from its relatively steady temperature. A GHE can attain the maximum benefit from the Earths heat when the water temperature reaches the ground, which occurs when the water velocity is moderate, allowing the heat exchanger to balance. Optimally, controlling water velocity is crucial such that the water reaches the desired temperature. Therefore, in this dissertation, I proposed a novel mathematical model of heat transfer behavior between the water inside the underground pipe and the surrounding ground for heating and cooling modes in a GHE. The proposed dynamic model was applied to three case studies of GHPS at Oakland University, the University Politècnica de València, and Oklahoma State University in heating and cooling modes to assess its validity and further enhance the performance of the GHE by determining the optimum velocity range. The results revealed the optimal water velocity ranges for three GHPSs. Model Predictive Control (MPC) was designed to optimize the GHE’s output temperature by controlling the water velocity, which can reduce the power consumption used for the water circulation pump and therefore maximize efficiency. In this dissertation, I also introduced an Improved Grey Prediction Model (IGM (1,1)). The proposed IGM (1,1) model was based on optimizing the current predicted value by subtracting the error prediction between the previous accumulated time response of the GM (1,1) model and the previous background value throughout the prediction length. The IGM (1,1) model was applied to perform the GHPS’s output temperature prediction eight hours in advance at Oklahoma State University, the University Politècnica de València, and Oakland University, respectively. Thus, the IGM (1,1) model outperformed the traditional GM (1,1) model for all used datasets

    The Effect of Dialysis Shift on Depression and Sleep Disturbances in Patients on Chronic Hemodialysis

    Individuals dialyze during the morning, afternoon, and evening shifts at dialysis units based on the unit’s and individual’s availability. Studies suggest that the dialysis shift impacts sleep disorders, depressive symptoms, quality of life, and mortality. One of the most common psychological problems in the dialysis population is depression that affects hospitalizations, mortality, and adherence to medications, treatments, and fluid restriction. In addition, sleep disturbances are common among end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients that further impair quality of life and increase mortality rates. Studies examining depression and sleep disturbances in relation to dialysis shifts are lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the effects of hemodialysis (HD) shifts (morning, afternoon, and evening) on outcome variables of depression and sleep disturbance. Quantitative data was collected with the following surveys: Demographic Data Survey, Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The overall level of depression (M = 4.25, SD = 2.52) and sleep disturbance (M = 8.31, SD = 3.96) were both considered mild. Patients who dialyzed on the first shift had the least amount of depressive symptoms (M = 4.25) and those on the third shift had the most depressive symptoms (M = 11.67). Patients who dialyzed on the third shift had significantly higher levels of depression (p = .002). In addition, patients who dialyzed on the third shift had the poorest sleep quality (M = 14.50), compared to those who dialyzed on the first shift who had the best sleep quality scores (M = 8.31) (p = .013). A significant positive correlation was found between depression and sleep quality scores (r = .72, p = .008). These results indicate the dialysis shift can play a significant role in sleep disturbances and depression in patients on HD. Further studies need to be conducted to validate these findings. Furthermore, this study could be the basis for future studies investigating effective health promotion interventions such as sleep hygiene in order to mitigate depression and sleep disturbances
