Branding Their Business and Developing and Refining Their Menus: A Qualitative Study of Mobile Food Vendors in Southeastern Michigan
A modernized aspect of the food away from home (FAFH) culture are food trucks, as they allow consumers to make more educated decisions about their food consumption, while basing their business practices around co-creation. Thirteen qualitative interviews were conducted using semi structured questioning to investigate how food truck operators brand themselves and refine their menus. Using open, line-by-line coding in order to identify key phrases of text, coded information was analyzed to determine overarching themes. Following interview analysis, it was concluded that food truck operators developed a unique identity for their trucks to stand out amongst competitors and attract customers. These identities were primarily based on life experiences and personal cultural perspectives. Upon implementation of their identity, external (from consumers) and internal (from truck operators) feedback influenced menu adjustments in a physiology-like feedback loop model. Consumer’s specific menu needs, ingredients, nutrition, preparation, and ethnicities in the food all had an influence on menu specifications. Applicable to both food trucks and restaurants at large, co-creation, or working directly with the consumers to better reflect their desires, allows consumers to make more educated decisions about their meal purchases. Thus food trucks may just be the bridge between healthier meals and FAFH
The Use of Virtual Reality as a Nursing Intervention for Anxiety in Patients with Cancer
Distractions help to decrease anxiety, and virtual reality is a new form of distraction with the potential to relieve anxiety (Glennon et al., 2018). The use of virtual reality as a nursing intervention is a potentially effective way of decreasing anxiety in patients with cancer. However, there is currently insufficient empirical evidence regarding whether this nursing intervention is correlated with decreased anxiety in patients, which constitutes a gap in the current knowledge. This thesis aims to answer what factors need to be evaluated in order to fill the knowledge gap and determine if a correlation exists between the use of virtual reality as a nursing intervention and decreased anxiety in cancer patients. Nursing articles about the intervention of virtual reality for anxiety relief were found through the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) along with set search terms and filters for relevancy
A Phenomenological Study of the Lived Experiences of Nurses Weaning COVID-19 Patients From Mechanical Ventilation
Abstract
Background: Nurse-led ventilatory weaning has shown to decrease the duration of mechanical ventilation of patients, but this practice has not been researched during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the United States.
Objective: To explore the meaning of the lived experiences of intensive care unit nurses in caring for COVID-19 patients being weaned off of mechanical ventilation.
Methods: This phenomenological qualitative study involved open-ended interviews with registered nurses working in intensive care units (ICU) across the US during the Coronavirus pandemic.
Results: The length of time, severity of the disease, high levels of sedation, and the instability of COVID-19 patients influenced the weaning process from the nurses’ perspective. In addition, the time available, short staffing, lack of training, personal protective equipment shortages, and increased accountability inhibited the nurse’s ability to properly lead the weaning process. Some nurses communicated a lack of confidence and knowledge to lead the weaning process, but voiced the invaluable support from the interdisciplinary healthcare team, especially from respiratory therapy.
Conclusion: In regards to the ventilatory weaning process of COVID-19 patients, nurses are a major contributor to the healthcare team and driving the patient’s plan of care. However, the barriers and differences the Coronavirus disease presents needs to be addressed in regards to nurses leading the weaning process off of mechanical ventilation
Synthesis and Reactivity of Alkene Dioxygenase Model Complexes
Carotenoids are a family of molecules that are categorized by their alternating carbon-carbon double bonds, and are responsible for a variety of important processes in all forms of life. Carotenoid Cleavage Dioxygenases (CCDs) are iron-containing enzymes capable of converting carotenoids to biologically important molecules, which are critical for biological functions in plants and animals. CCDs cause specific carbon-carbon double bonds in carotenoids to break. In this study, the investigation of CCDs and similar structured enzymes using small molecule model compounds will help to determine the relationship between structure and reactivity. This relationship can be tested by using iron-containing compounds for enzyme modeling with continual structure adjustments and reacting said compounds with relevant organic molecules. This will result in further knowledge of enzymes and the creation of compounds that can be used as catalysts to assist in the determination of reaction mechanisms. This information will advance understanding of reactions previously proposed by experimental and theoretical investigators in this field
Does the Great Lakes Basin have novel genotypes of the common reed Phragmites australis?
The common reed Phragmites australis is present in both native and introduced subspecies throughout North America, and the introduced subspecies is highly invasive. The population of the invasive introduced subspecies in the Midwest is generally thought to be a single genetic lineage. In the following project, difficult to identify stands of Phragmites were investigated and evidence was found of more than one genetic lineage in the introduced population. Chloroplast and nuclear gene sequencing results from the project provided evidence that atypical samples can be identified as a different haplotype than the common introduced lineage, with proposed region-specificity to Missaukee County and Blake Lake areas of Michigan. Further studies of other genetic loci are needed for the expansion of knowledge regarding the atypical introduced haplotype, which will allow natural resource managers to treat and control the spread of the species post-identification
