Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in Five Selected Poems

    No full text
This study, entitled Obsessive-compulsive Disorder in Five Selected Poems discusses individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a mental illness marked by intrusive thoughts, urges, or sensations (obsessions) that drive the individuals' repeated actions or behaviours (compulsions), as depicted in five selected poems. The purpose of this study is to examine how the characteristics of OCD are depicted in the five selected poems and to assess how these issues influence the patterns in writing the poems. The objects of this study are five poems: O.C.D., and Static Electricity by Neil Hilborn; You Can Take Off Your Sweater, I’ve Made Today Warm by Paige Lewis; and I’m Not Crazy, and I Can...I Will...Replace Those Weeds with Beautiful Flowers! by Cherry Pedrick. The theory used is psychoanalytical theory, as proposed by Sigmund Freud (2005). This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, involving a line-by-line analysis within each stanza. The findings reveal that obsessive-compulsive disorder significantly affects the writing patterns in these poems. This influence lends uniqueness to the literary works, offering individuals affected by OCD a space to freely express and share their inner selves through poetry

Background. Pneumonia is known as a forgotten pandemic, leading to high morbidity and mortality, especially among children under five years, with nutritional status identified as a risk factor for the disease's incidence. This study aimed to determine the relationship between nutritional status and pneumonia severity in children under five. Methods. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 122 children aged 2-59 months diagnosed with pneumonia based on medical record data from Prof. Dr. Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis Medan Hospital from February 2022 - January 2024. The data were obtained with consecutive sampling. Data were analyzed through univariate and bivariate analyses using the chi-square test with SPSS software version 27. Results. Of 122 patients, the majority of patients were aged 12-59 months (64.8%), male (56.6%), had good nutritional status (63.1%), had a high level of life outcomes (98.4%), and had pneumonia (71.4%). Bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between nutritional status and pneumonia severity (p < 0,001); PR = 4,3023; CI = 3,449 – 20,338). But there was no relationship between age (p = 0,081; PR = 1,740; CI = 0,989 – 4,963) and gender (p = 1,000; PR = 1,02; CI = 0,468 – 2,283) with severity of pneumonia. Conclusion. There is a significant relationship between nutritional status and severity of pneumonia in children under five. Keywords: Pneumonia, severity, nutritional status, severe pneumonia, childre

Metagenomic Analysis of Intestinal Microbiota Derived from Stool Samples of Third-Trimester Pregnant Women

Background: The human gut microbiota plays a unique role in metabolism, immunity, and nutrient absorption.  Various studies on the gut microbiota have identified a link between changes in bacterial abundance in the gut known as dysbiosis (imbalance) and the pathogenesis of certain disorders. It is known that an imbalance in the ratio of the phyla Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes has been associated with various chronic diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease and metabolic disorders. The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio is a measure used to assess gut microbiota composition, which is believed to play a significant role in intestinal health and metabolism. Studies suggest that a higher F/B ratio is often associated with obesity and other metabolic conditions. Objective: This study aims to carry out metagenomic analysis of third-trimester pregnant women's faecal samples to predict degenerative diseases using third-generation whole genome sequencing, namely PromethION nanopore technology.  Method: Nanopore Technology: DNA sequencing of faecal samples from pregnant women in the third trimester was performed using the Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) device based on the Ligation Sequencing gDNA - Native Barcoding Kit 24 V14 and following its guidelines. Result: Based on the quality and quantity of total DNA reads from 20 stool samples from pregnant women, only 4 samples were continued for analysis (1A, 2A, 3A and 4A). The results of the abundance of intestinal microbiota based on the most abundant phylum are Proteobacteria, Bacteriodetes, and Firmicutes. Conclusion: Meanwhile, based on species abundance, it shows that Prevotella copri (phylum Bacteriodetes) is abundant in samples 2A, 3A and 4A, while in sample 1A the most abundant species is Succinivirio dextrinosolvens (phylum Proteobacteria). Bacteroidetes are a group of Gram-negative bacteria that are often found to increase in individuals with type 2 diabetes and obesit
