Seismic behavior of non seismically designed eccentric reinforced concrete beam column joints
Non seismically designed eccentric reinforced concrete beam column joints were extensively used in existing reinforced concrete frame buildings, which were found to be vulnerable to seismic action in many incidences. To provide a fundamental understanding of the seismic performance and failure mechanism of the joints, three 2/3 scale exterior beam column joints with non seismically designed details were cast and tested under reversed cyclic loads simulating earthquake excitation. In this investigation, particular emphasis was given on the effects of the eccentricity between the centerlines of the beam and the column. It is shown that the eccentricity had significant effects on the damage characteristics, shear strength, and displacement ductility of the specimens. In addition, shear deformation and the strain of joint hoops were found to concentrate on the eccentric face of the joint. The results demonstrated that the specimen with an eccentricity of 1/4 column width failed in a brittle manner with premature joint shear failure, while the other specimens with less or no eccentricity failed in a ductile manner with joint shear failure after beam flexural yielding. Test results are compared with those predicted by three seismic design codes and two non seismic design codes. In general, the codes do not accurately predict the shear strength of the eccentric joints with non seismic details
Polyelectrolyte multilayer composite coating on 316 L stainless steel for controlled release of dual growth factors accelerating restoration of bone defects
A composite coating of polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) consisting of collagen, a chitosan barrier, and poly- γ-glutamic acid was fabricated using a spin coating technique to investigate and overcome the limited osseointegration capacity of 316 L stainless steel (316 L SS). To further enhance the biocompatibility, bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) and basic fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) were loaded separately as dual growth factors, allowing for progressive drug release following the natural process of bone regeneration. The first burst release of FGF-2 triggered the proliferation of surrounding cells, and the subsequent release of BMP-2 stimulated their differentiation. The microstructure, surface potential, hardness, reduced Young\u27s modulus, and wettability were assessed using scanning electron microscopy, nanoindentation, and water contact angle. The formation of apatite layers after immersion in simulated body fluid confirmed the bioactivity of this PEM. PEMs loaded with BMP-2 and FGF-2 showed a long sustained release of growth factors for up to 48 days. The biological properties were studied in vitro with rat bone mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) and in vivo using a rat critical-sized calvarial defect model. PEMs loaded with growth factors further stimulated the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of rBMSCs and the histology results indicated that new bone tissues could directly grow onto the PEMs. These findings suggest that PEM composite coating possesses significant potential for surface modification and long-term drug release of metallic implants to assist with bone restoration

Yann Sadi, or BlindSalida, is a former art director who turned illustrator. He loves illustration so much that he decided to explore its many pathways, such as explosive illustrations, infographics, flat design, mathematical diagrams, line works or digital lettering. He has collaborated on international campaigns (for Google with Anomaly, Renault with Publicis Conseil), editorial works (Daily Telegraph, Adweek), national campaigns (Duracell with Publicis, Ryanair with Dare), motion design (Honda with Nexus and Wieden+Kennedy, Fiat with Saatchi&Saatchi) and packaging (Chipotle, Azzaro with BPCM)
HKDI Alumni - The Spirit of Esprit
Hong Kong- and Germany-based fashion brand Esprit was actually founded in 1968 in San Francisco with the aim of bringing a “sunny Californian attitude” to its wares, now sold in 40 countries via 761 directly managed retail stores and some 6,332 wholesale points of sale.
Its Esprit Cares Trust, set up in 1993, provides financial support and charitable donations to various communities and includes an annual exchange scholarship for HKDI design students to participate in full-semester or short study trips to renowned design schools in Europe.
Three such award-winners were sent to Germany recently and here we report on how they earned that trip and what the future holds for them
Studio Showcase - Way Studio
Way Studio is an innovative architecture and design studio with a focus on coalescing architecture with art and technology. It has focused on discovering new possibilities through cross-disciplinary collaborations. Its scope of work covers urban planning, cultural projects such as galleries, museums and opera houses, mixed-use buildings, architectural renovations, residential projects, exhibitions and installation designs. Its collaboration with other disciplines results in an adaptive, flexible approach and methodology in our work .
The studio has done a lot of inter-disciplinary work alongside artists, designers, consultants, engineers and others, always with a focus on finding new ways of doing things. It says it is interested in discovering the balance between people and Nature, culture and technology. Way Studio currently has offices in Beijing, Hong Kong and Vancouver
