    The cultivation of university students’ spiritual wellbeing in holistic education: longitudinal mixed-methods study

    This longitudinal mixed-methods study, which consisted of (1) questionnaire surveys and (2) individual in-depth interviews, explored the development of the spiritual wellbeing of university students over the past four years under the cultivation of holistic education. A sample of 276 in quantitative and 32 students in qualitative studies was successfully followed up. The quantitative results suggest a main effect of time on the spiritual wellbeing of students, though no significant interaction effect is found between time and other variables, including gender, age and major disciplines. Qualitative results further show that holistic education through experiential learning contributes highly to the development of Chineseuniversity students’ spiritual wellbeing in three specific domains, namely personal and communal, environmental and transcendental. The finding indicates that (1) environment-related forces and (2) educationrelated dynamics were critical factors for the successful implementation of holistic education through experiential learning in universities

    香港城市景貌伴隨市區更新引發的拆舊建新而不斷變遷。不少「後九七香港青年作家」作家通過小說刻劃箇中變幻的軌跡,折射個人對此城此地的情感和記憶。本文聚焦於李維怡、可洛、張婉雯等三位後「九七香港青年作家」,考察他們筆下的市區更新,探析他們如何以小說反思資本不斷積累,不斷重塑香港地景所引起的種種問題。本文借用地方心理學的概念,討論資本重塑地景如何造成人與地方的情感斷裂,繼而探析市區更新如何帶來「無地方性」。最後,本文試圖指出「後九七香港青年作家」筆下的市區更新,怎樣呈現了他們對香港此城的「地方之愛」,以及對香港城市空間運用的期望

    Online learning during a global pandemic: Perceived benefits and issues in higher education

    The COVID-19 pandemic has created substantial challenges across higher education, requiring academic institutes to conduct all teaching, learning, and assessments remotely online. To obtain a stronger understanding of the opinions of teachers and students in Hong Kong during this period, an anonymous online survey was distributed to all teachers and students at a higher education institute. Overall, 48 teachers and 425 students responded to the survey. This paper specifically analyzes the responses to open-ended questions from the survey to identify key topics and concepts. Open coding was used to obtain key terms, which were further grouped into categories. Results indicated that higher education teachers and students had similar issues (e.g., access to digital devices and software) and benefits (e.g., flexible scheduling and time arrangements) regarding online education. However, some categories were reported as both issues and benefits by teachers and students (e.g., communication/interaction), demonstrating that individual circumstances, abilities, preferences, and experiences, may influence satisfaction levels. Furthermore, results indicated that the delivery of quality online education enforced during a pandemic requires a multi-factorial and tailored approach. The information presented in this study will help higher education institutes to develop, redefine, and re-conceptualize online learning initiatives

    Effect of concentrated Butt-Joints on flexural properties of laminated Bamboo-Timber flitch beams

    This paper presents the experimental and analytical studies to investigate the effect of concentrated butt-joints on the flexural properties of laminated bamboo-timber flitch beam (BTFB, or bio-flitch beam). The experimental results reveal that the concentrated butt-joints significantly reduce the flexural strength of the BTFB. They also suggest that the failure mechanism of the BTFB with or without concentrated butt-joints are completely different but less evidence shows an obvious effect of the butt-joints on the modulus of elasticity in bending. In addition, laminated bamboo lumber with concentrated butt-joints is found to be unsuitable for structural applications. The analytical predictions are in close agreement with the experimental results that demonstrate the potentials of the proposed analytical model as a forensic investigation instrument to estimate the strength reduction of the structure, if the butt-jointed laminated bamboo was, unfortunately, used in construction

    What Water Professionals Should Know about Antibiotics and Antibiotic Resistance: An Overview

    In light of recent predictions that by 2050, antimicrobial resistance will cause almost 10 million deaths annually, costing the global economy 100 trillion U.S. dollars, the examination of antibiotic resistance on both local and global scales has become essential. Antibiotic resistance is a multidimensional problem that connects water professionals with many scientists from different professions. In this review, we provide the big picture to the researchers venturing into this topic with respect to wastewater treatment and water safety, focusing on two aspects: antibiotics and antibiotic resistance and how they are intertwined. The story opens with the history of antibiotics, followed by their classes, modes of action and main bacterial targets, uses in clinical settings and agriculture, and presence in wastewater and the environment. The section about antibiotic resistance starts with its definition in clinical and environmental settings, followed by types and means of genetic transfer, prioritization, environmental risk and the current regulation framework, and the fate of antibiotic resistant bacteria and their genes throughout the wastewater treatment plant. The review ends with recommendations that should help water professionals in making educated decisions in research pursuits and avoiding common pitfalls when embarking on a journey of antibiotic resistance
