Have they really left? Memory, heritage, and the names of our ancestors. The case of an Apulian family, mine

Throughout our lives, many of us ponder the significance of our names. Like others, Giuseppe Pio Cascavilla too embarked on this introspective journey during his teenage years, spurred by curiosity and a desire to understand his identity. His initial revelations came from Don Raffaele, a deputy-parish who informed him that Giuseppe means \u27may God add and abound,\u27 often sharing amusing anecdotes to emphasize this. Pio, on the other hand, simply translates to \u27pious\u27 in English. While these etymologies provided some satisfaction, they barely scratched the surface of what names mean on a personal level. Names can carry profound personal significance, reflecting the intentions of those who bestow them, and are deeply entwined with religious, territorial, and even sports-related identities. The author\u27s own family’s naming traditions offer a rich tapestry of such meanings, rooted in memory and devotion. The author explores these traditions in the Italian region of Apulia within the maternal branch of his own family, the Di Biases, spanning three generations. The names in his family fall into three categories: those honoring relatives, those originating from religious devotion, and those chosen purely out of personal preference. A recurring theme is the desire to keep the memory of loved ones alive through names. For instance, the name Luigi appears multiple times across generations, adhering to a tradition of naming firstborns after grandparents. This practice, common in the author\u27s region, creates a link between past and present, ensuring that familial bonds endure. Religious devotion also plays a significant role. Author\u27s cousin Veliana, for example, is named after the Madonna dei Sette Veli, reflecting both religious faith and a connection to their hometown. The author\u27s own name, Giuseppe Pio, honors both a family tradition and the revered Padre Pio. Despite the pressure of tradition, some names are chosen freely, reflecting the parents\u27 personal tastes once the customary obligations have been fulfilled. This blend of obligation and choice highlights the complex interplay of memory, devotion, and personal preference in the family\u27s naming practices. Ultimately, names in the author\u27s family are not just labels but symbols of heritage, devotion, and continuity, weaving a rich narrative that connects generations and preserves a shared history

A Co-Generated Analysis of Thai Homestays: Overcoming SERVQUAL Deficiencies and Sustainability Barriers

    No full text
Post-COVID-19, international travelers have brand assurance expectations that often surpass the benchmark set by the Thai Homestay Standard, leaving some operators struggling to position with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Thai homestays face significant challenges due to the lack of clear transitional pathways toward sustainability and alignment with international (ASEAN) standards for ‘service quality’ (SERVQUAL). This study critically examines these SERVQUAL deficiencies and analyzes Thai homestays in comparison with the ASEAN Homestay Standard, using frameworks derived from SERVQUAL and the SDGs. It identifies barriers within the standards and proposes actionable tools to bridge these gaps, enabling homestays to support sustainability objectives better. Adopting a reflective and co-creative methodological approach, the research engaged a rural community in Northeastern Thailand to co-generate insights towards homestay quality. Findings show community-identified barriers across three core SERVQUAL dimensions: Tangibles, Responsiveness, and Assurance. However, external observations on SERVQUAL of homestays identified all five dimensions, including Reliability and Empathy, albeit against different items. The internal/external gaze juxtaposition suggests a precarious role of sustainability within Thai ethnic homestays. The study’s novelty lies in its longitudinal fieldwork and applying a mutual gaze to embed SERVQUAL principles into homestay practices via a refined standards matrix. Findings highlight the pressing need for revisions to the Thai Homestay Standard, equipping hosts to transition effectively toward internationalization while achieving higher service quality and sustainability

Yet Again on the Liturgy Described in the Mystagogia of Maximus Confessor

In 2008, Robert Taft published an article trying to prove the Constantinopolitan provenance of the Mystagogy of Maximus the Confessor which countered the skepticism of the academic community. The discovery in the Liber asceticus (contemporaneous with the Mystagogy) of three quotations of prayers from the Liturgy known as the Liturgy of St. James weakens the arguments brought by Taft. This article further analyses several passages in the Mystagogy that point toward attributing Maximus’ Commentary to the liturgical tradition of the Jerusalem Patriarchate

Digital Media Education between Exhaustion, Classism and Dialogue – Action-Oriented Perspectives for Primary Education: Handlungsorientierte Perspektiven für die Primarstufe

    No full text
This essay examines how digital media education in primary schools can be shaped as an emancipatory practice under conditions of acceleration, exhaustion, and class-based assumptions. The starting point is drawn from experiences in higher education and school practice, which are linked to three theoretical perspectives: Hartmut Rosa’s theory of social acceleration and resonance, bell hooks’ analysis of classism and voice, and Paulo Freire’s concept of dialogical pedagogy. The analysis shows that digital technologies only create an appearance of relief while in fact generating new demands. Resonance here opens an attitude that prioritizes relationship and meaning-making over efficiency and timing. At the same time, it becomes clear that participation is not self-evident but depends on power relations. In particular, children from marginalised groups need spaces in which their voices carry weight, whether through audio recordings, peer feedback, or creative media products. Freire emphasises that digital media can only be liberating when they are not used merely as transmission tools but instead enable problem-posing learning and dialogue. As a connecting metaphor, digital learning is described as a drop process. Resonance forms the ground, voice is the impulse, and dialogue the spreading waves. What matters is therefore not the choice of individual apps but the teacher’s pedagogical stance. Media-educational practice in this context means design-ing learning spaces that make resonance, participation, and dialogue possible. Only then can digital education act as a liberating force otherwise, it reinforces acceleration, adaptation, and alienation

In Loss – A Fundamental Problem of Modernity (orginal title: Verlust – ein Grundproblem der Moderne), Andreas Reckwitz presents a comprehensive study that aims to understand loss in its social context. It convincingly traces how losses are playing an increasingly defining role and stand in opposition to the promises of a previously accepted narrative of progress. This monograph offers numerous relevant connections, not least for current educational issues and pedagogical research

Emphatically One’s Own: Autonomy, Identity and Self-Respect

Contemporary societies are increasingly polarized around identity issues. Demands for the recognition of a person’s gender identity, for instance, are viewed with scepticism or even hostility. This paper argues that recognition of persons’ identities ought to be of public concern in liberal democratic societies. It departs from Francis Fukuyama’s and Patrick Deneen’s critique of identity politics as self-centered and destructive of shared norms. Fukuyama and Deneen view identity politics as a demand for the recognition of an individual’s or group’s individuality or authentic self – who they really are. The paper clarifies this idea based on a discussion of Harry Frankfurt’s theory of personal identity and argues that, from a liberal point of view, recognition of one’s identity is a public concern. This is because identity is importantly related to autonomy. Acting autonomously depends on basal self-respect, and the ease of attaining basal self-respect depends on experiencing recognition for one’s identity. Systematic depreciation or unintelligibility of one’s identity render it much more difficult to attain the basal self-respect needed to act autonomously. This, it is argued, constitutes an injustice to which political actors and legal regulations should be attentive. In conclusion, the paper offers responses to some of Fukuyama’s and Deneen’s objections to identity politics.Contemporary societies are increasingly polarized around identity issues. In recent years, the cumulative imposition of administrative fines, as provided for under Austrian administrative criminal law, has increasingly become the focus of rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union. In view of this development, the aim of this paper is to examine the implications of European law pertaining to the cumulative imposition of administrative fines. By analysing the relevant case law of the Court of Justice, the paper establishes how the proportionality of cumulated administrative fines is to be assessed from an EU law perspective and what particularities need to be taken into account
