Javanese Cultural Epistemology of Raden Muhammad Adnan’s Thoughts in Tafsir Al-Qur’an Suci Basa Jawi
This paper discussed the epistemology of Javanese interpretation, studying the thoughts of Raden Muhammad Adnan through Tafsir Al-Qur’an Suci Basa Jawi book. This tafsir book, published in the 20th century, has become an essential document in studying the science of the Qur'an and tafsir. This phenomenon is because the book was written by the first rector of the Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University, Yogyakarta. The book was written in Javanese and lived in the New Order era, coupled with the involvement of power, which is why the authors study it further. Therefore, we need to know the background of the book's writing, the exegete's scientific genealogy and the book's methods and presentation to increase the local interpretation values. Thus, the authors used qualitative research methods and an interpretive epistemological approach. In the study of epistemology, seeking knowledge focuses on three aspects: the source of knowledge, the validity of the truth and the implications of the fact of the interpreter's knowledge. The transformation of science impacted the Basa Jawi interpretation book, which emphasizes local Javanese cultural and mystical approaches
The Concept of Maşlaḥah Family in Lampung Customary Law: A Study of Mak Dijuk Siang and Its Relevance to Indonesian Marriage Law
This article discusses the concept of maşlaḥah family, which is part of the customary law of Mak Dijuk Siang (prohibition of divorce) in the Lampung Pepadun Megou Pak clan. Despite the prohibition of divorce, household problems are addressed within the community, and there are customary sanctions for violating this rule. The purpose of this article is to analyze why traditional leaders enforce and uphold the Mak Dijuk Siang customary rules and their relevance to Indonesian marriage law. The study uses a qualitative method, combining field research with library research in the sociology of law. The research was conducted in the Lampung Pepadun Megou Pak community in Tulang Bawang Regency and West Tulang Bawang Regency, Lampung Province. Primary data was obtained from traditional leaders through observation, interviews, and documentation. The analysis applies the theory of legal effectiveness. The results show that the concept of maşlaḥah family in the Mak Dijuk Siang rule reflects the community's belief in the philosophy of Piil Pesenggiri, which discourages divorce and aims to build eternal families. In cases of household conflicts, mediation is preferred through the Penyimbang Pepung Adat Customary Institution. The practice of maşlaḥah family through the Mak Dijuk Siang customary rules has been effective in reducing the high divorce rate, demonstrating its relevance to Indonesian marriage law
Contestation of Religious Identity in the Cultural Heritage Sites: A Case Study of the Masjid Gedhe Kauman Yogyakarta, Indonesia
This article explores the contestation of religious identity at the Masjid Gedhe ‘Grand Mosque’ of Kauman Yogyakarta, a provincial cultural heritage site in Yogyakarta. The study focuses on two events between October 2019 and March 2020: the rejection of the Muslim United #2 event by the Keraton ‘Palace’ and the refusal by the local Kauman community to hold a Nahdhatul Ulama anniversary at the mosque. The series of events can be read as an effort by each party to contest the power they have. This research is a descriptive study guided by a constructivist research philosophy and historical approach, which focuses on understanding cultural identity through the lens of social context. The study employs a combination of primary sources, such as photo archives and documents, alongside secondary sources, including articles from online news portals, to analyze two specific events. Data is collected through these sources and analyzed using Stuart Hall's cultural identity theory, providing a framework for interpreting the findings and examining how religious identity is contested at the Masjid Gedhe Kauman Yogyakarta. The result highlights how the Masjid Gedhe Kauman Yogyakarta became a contested space for religious identity between different groups, with each event reflecting ongoing power dynamics and cultural negotiations. The rejection of both the Muslim United #2 and the NU Anniversary events illustrates how identity is shaped and contested through representation and authority, where power structures, both institutional and community-based, played key roles in defining the mosque's religious and cultural identity
Business Performance of Batik Traders in Semarang According to Javanese Islamic Trade Culture
This study seeks to analyze the business performance of batik traders in the Johar Baru market of Semarang City, focusing on Javanese Islamic trade culture as an integral aspect of Javanese culture. This culture is characterized by three essential traits: harmonious, functional structural, and transcendental. The application of these characteristics draws from local wisdom rather than directly from the Qur'an or Hadith; however, upon closer examination, they do not contradict Islamic teachings. Thus, the business performance of batik traders in Johar market effectively reflects Javanese Islamic ethical values in trade. Employing qualitative research methods with a single case study design, the analysis followed the framework proposed by Miles and Huberman, which encompasses data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification. Informants were selected through purposive sampling techniques, which included in-depth interviews, documentation review, and focus group discussions. The study revealed that the moral attitudes and business performance ethos of batik traders in the Johar market are grounded in these three characteristics of Javanese cultural moral values: harmonious, functional structural, and transcendental. The identification of their performance is illustrated through various concepts that form several propositions. These findings culminated in the development of a new mini-theory termed the "Religiosity of Sustainable Javanese Trade Performance". This theory comprises four key steps: harmonization of the environment, harmonization of society and government, fostering friendliness and honesty, and implementing educational marketing strategies. These four steps embody moral values rooted in Islamic Shari'a and are scientifically valid as indicators of Javanese Islamic trade performance
Religious Moderation and Cyber Social Morality: An Internalization Study among Student
The rapid expansion of digital interaction among university students has created new challenges for sustaining religious moderation values in online environments. This study examines the process of internalizing religious moderation values among students of the Institut Agama Islam Bakti Negara (IAIBN) Tegal and its implications for the manifestation of their social morality in cyberspace. Amid the government’s extensive efforts to strengthen religious moderation—particularly within Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTKI)—the digital sphere has become a dominant arena of social interaction that presents unique psychological challenges. Employing a qualitative case-study approach, this research collected data through in-depth interviews, digital participatory observation (digital ethnography), and document analysis. The data were analyzed thematically by integrating the theoretical frameworks of value internalization and John Suler’s Online Disinhibition Effect. The findings reveal that the internalization of religious moderation values at IAIBN Tegal—implemented through initiatives such as the Rumah Moderasi and curriculum integration—has been largely successful at the cognitive level. However, the manifestation of these values in students’ social morality within cyberspace remains complex and ambivalent. Online disinhibition factors—such as dissociative anonymity, invisibility, and dissociative imagination—significantly shape students’ behavior, often creating discrepancies between the values they espouse and the actions they display online. These dynamics may lead to benign disinhibition (positive openness) that aligns with moderation values, or to toxic disinhibition (aggressiveness and intolerance) that contradicts them. This study concludes that value internalization is contextual rather than absolute; the situational forces of cyberspace can temporarily override internalized values. The findings underscore the urgency for developing a “Digital Moderation Literacy” curriculum within PTKI—one that goes beyond theological knowledge transfer and equips students with metacognitive skills to consciously recognize and manage the effects of online disinhibition
