Digital Hadith and Gendered Harm: Negotiating Religious Authority and Female Circumcision Discourses on Instagram

    No full text
The digital reproduction of weakly authenticated hadiths used to support the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM/C) exacerbates health risks. It reinforces patriarchal bias within Muslim communities, thereby eroding gender justice and maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah amidst the democratization of religious authority on social media. Although the World Health Organization (WHO) has designated FGM/C as a harmful practice with serious medical and psychological consequences, some Indonesian Muslim groups continue to perpetuate it through cultural and religious legitimacy, creating tensions between textual tradition, human rights principles, and the dynamics of online discourse. This study addresses this gap by analyzing hadith narratives on the Instagram account @halalcorner, integrating hadith criticism and digital netnography to explore the negotiation of religious authority. Using a qualitative-descriptive netnography approach, data were collected through non-participant observation (March–August 2025) of 12 core posts, 1,256 user comments, and multimodal elements, with purposive sampling based on keywords and engagement levels. The analysis followed Kozinets’ four-stage model (investigation, immersion, interaction, integration), with validity maintained through methodological, researcher, and theoretical triangulation, as well as Cohen’s kappa calculation (yielding 85% agreement), peer debriefing, and an audit trail. The findings reveal a dominance of pro-circumcision narratives (70%), followed by opposition narratives (15%) and neutral narratives (15%). The cited hadith tend to emphasize the notion of ṭahārah rather than legal prescriptions, revealing interpretive biases that contradict the protection of life and lineage. By drawing on feminist theology and digital religion theory, this study underscores the need for online discourse that is more reflective, humanistic, and aligned with Islam’s vision as a mercy for all creation

Innovative Integration of Islamic Values into the KiVa Program: A Justice and Empathy Framework to Combat Violence in Indonesian Schools

    No full text
School violence, including bullying and sexual violence, poses a significant challenge to the well-being and development of students, particularly in Indonesia. Despite the success of anti-bullying programs like KiVa from Finland in reducing such violence, adapting these programs to the Indonesian context, which is deeply influenced by local cultural and religious values, is crucial for their effectiveness. This study proposes integrating key Islamic values 'adl (justice) and ihsan (empathy) into the KiVa program to create a more inclusive and safe educational environment for Indonesian students. The aim is to address not only the behavior of students but also the underlying societal issues, such as patriarchal norms and social hierarchies, that often fuel sexual violence in schools. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), this research analyzes relevant studies published between 2018 and 2024, focusing on the application of Islamic principles in educational contexts. The findings suggest that integrating 'adl and ihsan enhances KiVa’s effectiveness by fostering fairness, justice, and empathy, which are essential for preventing bullying and sexual violence. The integration of these values ensures a more holistic approach, addressing both the emotional and social aspects of the problem. This research contributes to the body of knowledge by offering a culturally relevant framework that can be adapted to Indonesian schools. Additionally, the study provides policy recommendations to promote teacher training, community engagement, and the inclusion of these values in the school curriculum. Further research is needed to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of this approach in creating safer and more just school environments

    No full text
The mismatch between the grammar used in writing English and the structure of Indonesian was often the leading cause of errors in writing. This article further analyzed the error analysis of writing products made by Indonesian Islamic university students of EFL More specifically, this study attempted to describe the types of grammatical errors in written products, the frequent types of grammatical errors, and the students’ awareness of errors. Two methods, quantitative and qualitative, were applied to accomplish this. Written tests and semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. Students’ written Production was analyzed for errors based on the Surface Strategy Taxonomy Theory proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen. The findings of this study revealed that students from Indonesian Islamic universities displayed a range of errors in their written products. The most prevalent errors identified were Misformation errors within the writing products of these EFL students. The errors committed by the students in their written outputs were further substantiated by the results of interviews, indicating that, whether aware or unaware, the students struggled to recognize and self-correct their grammatical errors in their written product. This study has provided significant insights into teaching English in general and specifically in writing instruction. By understanding the types of sentence errors commonly made by students, educators can focus on critical teaching points and effectively monitor their student’s adherence to the lessons delivered

Problem solving and logical thinking are essential 21st-century skills that are highly relevant to science learning, particularly in biology. The purpose of this study is to present the interaction profile between problem solving and logical thinking in teaching materials for the topic of inheritance of traits in schools. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with indicator reduction. A total of 66 indicators were developed based on problem-solving aspects—Identify the problem; Define and represent the problem; Explore possible strategies; Act on the strategies; and Look back and evaluate the effects of your activities—and logical-thinking aspects, namely proportional reasoning, controlling variables, probabilistic reasoning, correlational reasoning, and combinatorial reasoning. The findings show that the teaching materials tend to emphasize the IPPR aspect (Identify – Proportional Reasoning) with an average of 4.77%, while the APBR aspect (Act – Probabilistic Reasoning) is less accommodated, with an average of 0.53%. Based on these results, the interaction profile of problem-solving and logical-thinking aspects in inheritance of traits materials in schools is presented unevenly and requires improvement. Therefore, further research is needed to develop and test problem-solving- and logical-thinking-based teaching materials through a classroom experimental approach to measure their impact on student learning outcomes. The findings of this study contribute to the field by providing an empirical basis for curriculum developers, textbook authors, and educators to design teaching materials that integrate higher-order thinking skills more evenly and effectively.

    No full text
Radicalization has entered the realm of education. Fundamentalist doctrines and movements have prepared students as their successors. Campuses are used as a medium for transnational ideologies to enter, which results in the rejection of the Pancasila ideology. Students with minimal religious knowledge are the main targets. This study aims to explore how religious moderation is actualized and strengthened among students of the State Islamic University (UIN) Jurai Siwo Lampung and the Islamic Institute of Islamic Religion Sunan Giri Ponorogo in responding to the increasing concerns of the influence of radicalism in higher education. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data is collected through in -depth interviews with college leaders, from the Chancellor to the Chair of the Study Program and its staff, as well as active students. In addition, observations were made on the understanding and attitude of religious moderation and the study of campus documentation. The findings reveal two primary modes of religious moderation implementation: (1) formal integration through curriculum content and the establishment of religious moderation centers, and (2) informal or hidden curriculum through cross-course character formation and lecturer role modeling. These efforts reflect a strategic response to preserve inclusive Islamic values and counter extremist narratives. The study recommends institutionalizing religious moderation pedagogies to support the vision of Islam as a religion of peace and compassion
