ChatGPT vs Gemini: Which Digs Deeper into Arabic Semantics?
This study examined the performance of AI models in translating classical Arabic grammatical literature, focusing on Alfiyah Ibn Mālik and Naẓm al-Imrīṭī, two foundational texts marked by dense syntactic structures and strong pedagogical significance. ChatGPT and Gemini were evaluated in terms of translation accuracy, terminological precision, and contextual sensitivity. A panel of expert evaluators with more than fifteen years of experience in Arabic instruction assessed each model’s capacity to apply syntactic rules, preserve semantic coherence, and maintain stylistic and didactic integrity. The aim and scope of the paper centred on measuring translation quality through a combined framework of METEOR scoring and human expert judgement. Qualitative evaluation further explored the models’ adaptability to classical Arabic rhetorical patterns and instructional conventions. The results showed that ChatGPT achieved higher lexical alignment and word-level accuracy than Gemini according to METEOR scores; however, both models demonstrated notable limitations in rendering idiomatic expressions and conveying deeper grammatical and contextual meanings. Statistical analysis using the Mann–Whitney U test revealed no significant difference between the two models, underscoring the limited explanatory power of automated metrics when applied to highly structured classical texts. These findings underscored the ongoing need for expert validation beyond numerical scoring and supported the adoption of a hybrid translation framework, in which AI-generated outputs are systematically refined through scholarly review. Future research was suggested to broaden the textual corpus, incorporate additional AI models and evaluation metrics, and further strengthen expert-led validation to enhance the reliability of AI-assisted translation in advanced Arabic grammatical studies
The Effectiveness of Character Strengths-Based Peer Counseling in Fostering Psychological Well-Being in Islamic Boarding Schools
Low psychological well-being and elevated help-seeking behaviors among students in Islamic boarding schools underscore the necessity for effective psychological support systems. This study assesses the effectiveness of a character strengths-based peer counseling intervention in enhancing students' psychological well-being within Islamic boarding school settings. Grounded in the principles of positive psychology and aligned with Islamic educational values, the intervention emphasizes five core character strengths (gratitude, hope, zest, curiosity, and love) delivered through a peer counseling framework. Employing a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design, the study involved 81 first-year students (ages 13-17) from three pesantren in Semarang, randomly assigned to experimental (n = 45) and control (n = 36) groups. The Psychological Well-Being Scale (Ryff, 1989) was used to measure six dimensions of well-being. Data were analyzed via Two-Way ANOVA to evaluate the intervention's impact over time. Results indicated significant improvements in psychological well-being within the experimental group (p < .01), with a notable post-test mean score increase of 13.53 points, interaction effect with η²p = 0.049. This value approaches the moderate category. These findings substantiate that character strengths-based peer counseling is an effective and culturally appropriate intervention for promoting mental health in faith-based educational environments. The study contributes to applying positive psychology in non-Western contexts, emphasizing the potential of peer-led models to enhance adolescents' emotional resilience, interpersonal relationships, and religious character development. The study's limitations and potential directions for future research are also discussed to improve the generalizability and sustainability of the intervention
Herd Behavior as a Determinant of Students’ Choice of Major to Study in the University
After graduation from secondary school, students think of their choice of university major, a decision that may be affected by factors beyond their own preferences, including herd behavior effect. The aims of this study were to construct a scale for the herd behavior effect on students’ university major choice (HBMC) and to explore any differences in this effect according to gender and college. A ten-item scale developed by the researcher was administered to a sample of 1,254 students from six universities in Jordan. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the unidimensional structure for the HBMC scale, and its good psychometric properties (α=0.953). The results also indicated significant gender differences in herd behavior effects, in favor of males (F=5.281, df =1, p<0.01). These results highlight the importance of psychological and vocational guidance programs to enhance secondary school students’ independent thinking to select their university major according to their inclinations, abilities, aspirations, and their plans of professional future, rather than blindly imitating of others
Efficacy of Role Play Method Through Communication and Critical Thinking Approach in Arabic Reading Skills
Arabic reading instruction in Indonesian secondary schools still faces major challenges due to the dominance of teacher centered and conventional learning practices that limit students’ engagement, communication, and critical thinking. In response to 21stcentury learning demands that emphasize communication and critical-thinking skills, this study proposes an integrative instructional model that combines the role play method with communicative and critical thinking approaches to enhance Arabic-reading skills. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the role play method through a communicative and critical thinking approach on reading skills. This research is a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design. The participants were seventh grade students of Madrasah Tsanawiyyah Nahdlatul Ulama 19 Protomulyo Kaliwungu South selected through purposive sampling and divided into experiment and control classes. Data were collected through a reading comprehension test and analyzed using the Mann Whitney U test. The result indicated a significant difference in reading skill improvement between the two groups, with an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed)= 0.000<0.05. This study contributes empirical evidence by repositioning reading from a passive activity into an interactive and analytical learning process through role play based instruction. The findings are expected to broaden the application of role play beyond productive skills and provide a practical pedagogical model aligned with 21stcentury competencies. Future research is recommended to examine this model in wider educational contexts, integrate digital learning tools, and conduct longitudinal and qualitative studies to explore its long-term impact on Arabic-reading development
Istigāśah and the Construction of Social Ethics: A Case Study of Jama'ah Mantab in Ogan Ilir, Indonesia
This article examines the role of istigāśah in shaping social ethics and collective morality through the study of the religious practices of the Jama’ah Mantab in the Ogan Ilir region, Indonesia. Istigāśah not only functions as a spiritual ritual, but also as a medium of moral transformation in the social life of the members. This research is a field research with a qualitative approach and phenomenological methods. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of routine istigāśah activities. The analysis is carried out with reference to the theory of social constructionism, which emphasizes that social realities, including moral values, are formed through symbolic interaction and the process of construction of common meaning within religious communities. In addition, the theory of moral transformation is also used to explain the dynamics of ethical change in the members. The results of the study show that istigāśah plays a role in internalizing values such as patience, honesty, solidarity, and empathy, as well as strengthening collective awareness, social attachment, and moral identity. Thus, istigāśah not only strengthens individual spirituality, but also forms a more harmonious social order. This research contributes to the development of the study of social ethics and sociology of religion by emphasizing that collective religious practices such as istigāśah can be an effective instrument in building collective morality in society

Cosmopolitan Da'wah as a Social Response to the Phenomenon of Țarīqah Gairu Mu'tabarah in Indonesia
This article examines the concept of cosmopolitan da‘wah as a social response to the phenomenon of ṭarīqah gairu mu‘tabarah ‘ṣūfī orders’ in Indonesia through a qualitative library research approach. Data were collected systematically from official documents of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, fatwas of the Indonesian Ulama Council, academic works on sufism, and international journal articles, and were analyzed using content and thematic analysis. Employing Vertovec and Cohen’s theory of cosmopolitanism, the study argues that the existence of gairu mu‘tabarah orders cannot be reduced merely to questions of sanad legitimacy but should also be understood as expressions of spiritual plurality within contemporary muslim society. The findings demonstrate that the six dimensions of cosmopolitanism. Sociocultural conditions, worldview, transnational political projects, identity recognition, dispositional orientations, and practices, provide an analytical framework that positions cosmopolitan da‘wah as a means of accommodating ṣūfī diversity, strengthening social cohesion, and fostering an inclusive, moderate, and peaceful spiritual space
The Semiotic Construction of Boycott Narratives against Pro-Israel Products: A Case Study of Instagram Account @bdsarabic
This study investigates the semiotic construction of boycott messages against pro-Israel products on the Instagram account @bdsarabic, situated within the broader discourse of digital activism in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As social media platforms increasingly serve as tools of resistance, the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement strategically utilizes Instagram to disseminate political messages. This study aims to explore how visual and textual elements work together to construct symbolic meanings that influence public sentiment and mobilization. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research applies Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic model of semiotics—comprising representamen, object, and interpretant—to analyze three selected campaign visuals targeting Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, and Carrefour. The findings reveal that Arabic texts function not merely as linguistic signs but also as cultural codes that evoke moral and emotional responses. Meanwhile, modified brand logos act as visual arguments, transforming familiar corporate symbols into representations of violence and injustice. The study concludes that such multimodal constructions serve as rhetorical tools to align everyday consumption with ideological resistance. This research contributes to the understanding of how digital platforms, particularly in Arabic-language activist spaces, function as discursive arenas for contesting hegemony and constructing counter-narratives. The findings also offer insights into the role of semiotics in digital communication and the potential of social media as a catalyst for collective consciousness
Socio-Cultural Dynamics and Interethnic Relations: The Chinese-Malay Interface on Rupat Island in the Post-1998 Indonesian Reformation Context
This study examines the dynamics of relations between ethnic Chinese and Malays on Rupat Island, Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province, in the post-1998 Reformation context and its position as an Indonesia-Malaysia border region. In contrast to major cities such as Jakarta and Medan, which experienced ethnic violence in 1998, Rupat Island demonstrated social stability and intergroup harmony. This study aims to explain the socio-historical factors that support social resilience, identify the cross-cultural adaptation strategies developed, and interpret identity formation and social integration in this multi-ethnic border region. Using a border anthropology approach and descriptive-analytical qualitative methods, this study collected data through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and a review of historical documents and local archives. The analysis was conducted by combining Abner Cohen's (1969) theory of ethnic instrumentalization, Gudykunst and Kim's (2003) cross-cultural adaptation, and Homi Bhabha's (2012) theory of cultural hybridity. The research findings demonstrate that social resilience on Rupat Island does not arise from the absence of conflict, but from an active process of cultural adaptation, ongoing identity negotiation, and the role of local elites in maintaining social balance. The Chinese community's historical adaptation to coastal Malay values, the inclusive local wisdom of the Malay community, and the geographic character of the border, which is open to socio-economic exchange, are key factors in shaping harmony. These findings enrich the study of ethnic relations in Indonesia by demonstrating that economics and identity can serve as vehicles for social integration in border regions
