Nyadran Ruwah Tradition as a Manifestation of Rationality in Nusantara Philosophical Thought

    No full text
The rationality of Nyadran as a cultural and philosophical Nusantara phenomenon needs to be studied, including Nyadran at Kemloko. The research aims to explain the Nyadran tradition, history, and the rationality of society. The data was collected by observation, interviews, literature review. We conducted observations of Nyadran practitioners in Kemloko hamlet, Temanggung, Central Java, and carried out in-depth interviews using purposive sampling based on key figures involved in the implementation of Nyadran in Kemloko. The data were examined through the lens of cultural rationality, which combines cultural and rational choice perspectives to explain behavior in political and social contexts. The results of the study, first, Nyadran in Kemloko was carried out in the months of Ruwah and Rajab, the month before Ramadan, coinciding with Friday. Kenduri Nyadran is performed at home or tomb and its implementation develops according to community conditions. Second, Nyadran has existed since the pre-Majapahit era and has grown to this day. Third, the implementation of Nyadran is based on traditional, affective, instrumental rationality and value rationality. Nyadran is an act of following the traditions of parents and ancestors. Affectionately, Nyadran is a proof of respect, obedience and devotion, as well as self-melting in society. Nyadran instrumentally becomes a means of showing devotion, a means of praying, a means of socializing, and a means of entertainment. The values contained in Nyadran are considered not to conflict with religious values and goodness in local culture

The Ritual Economy of Death: An Analysis of the Tulak Breuh Tradition and Fidyat al-Salāh in Acehnese Society, Indonesia

    No full text
This article examines the practice of fidyat ‘ransom’ for prayer (al-ṣalāh) for the deceased in North Aceh through the lens of vernacularizing fiqh, explaining how textual norms are translated into socially legitimate local practices. Employing a qualitative design—library research on Shāfiʿī fiqh and cross-madhhab comparison, combined with fieldwork (observation, in-depth interviews, documentation) across several sub-districts—the study maps operational definitions, normative bases, and modes of implementation, including the tulak breuh tradition (a rotation of rice-based almsgiving). Findings show that what is locally called “fidyat al-ṣalāh” operates primarily as almsgiving/ihdāʾ al-thawāb and, in specific cases, via the Ḥanafī route contingent on waṣiyya (valued at ṣadaqat al-fiṭr and drawn from one-third of the estate); practices are non-coercive and prioritize eligible recipients. Clerical reasoning clusters into three types: first, tradition-solidarity (communal almsgiving), second, iḥtiyāṭ within Shāfiʿī (qawl ḍaʿīf; one mudd= 650–700 grams of rice; per missed prayer) as a personal charity, and third the Ḥanafī position requiring a valid will. Tulak breuh functions as a socio-economic infrastructure that renders the practice feasible (cost-sharing) and legitimate (local authority, ʿurf). The article contributes by refining the operational-normative framework of fidyah/kaffārah for prayer, proposing a model of fiqh vernacularization for bodily acts of worship, and offering practical implications: terminological education, enforcement of waṣiyya and one-third limits, recipient prioritization, operational measures, and basic record-keeping

Oral Transmission to Symbolic Capital: Pragmatic Analysis of Teacher-Student Interaction in Tasmīʻ Ḥadīth Tradition

    No full text
The interaction between teachers (kiai) and students (santri) has always played a crucial role in Islamic education, particularly within the tasmīʻ ḥadīth tradition in pesantren, where knowledge is transmitted both orally and symbolically. This oral interaction not only represents a pedagogical process but also serves as a social mechanism through which authority, respect, and scholarly values are reproduced. This study aims to examine the pragmatic dimensions of communication during the tasmīʻ ḥadīth performance and to interpret how these interactions generate symbolic capital within the pesantren context. The focus of this study is directed toward how utterances, corrections, and verbal responses between teachers and students construct symbolic power relations and reproduce religious values within the Islamic scholarly tradition. This research employs a qualitative approach using participatory observation and in-depth interviews. Data were collected through observations conducted at a pesantren in East Lombok. Data analysis was carried out by identifying speech acts, politeness strategies, and forms of symbolic recognition that emerge during the tasmīʻ process. The findings show that oral interaction between teachers and students functions not only as a means of transmitting religious knowledge but also as a medium for constructing symbolic capital in the form of scholarly legitimacy, hierarchical respect, and the internalization of pious values. This study offers a new contribution by integrating pragmatic analysis and the theory of symbolic capital within the context of the tasmīʻ tradition, which has rarely been explored from an interdisciplinary perspective

Ethno-Religious Nationalism and the Restructuring of Citizenship in India: A Constitutional and Diplomatic Analysis

    No full text
India’s 2019 Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the revocation of Article 370 mark a significant shift from secular democratic principles toward ethno-religious nationalism. The CAA introduces religious criteria for citizenship by offering expedited naturalization to non-Muslim minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, while deliberately excluding Muslims. Simultaneously, Article 370’s revocation dismantled the constitutional autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir, India’s only Muslim-majority region. This qualitative empirical study employs document analysis, comparative legal analysis, and critical discourse analysis to examine legislative texts, constitutional amendments, and academic literature. Primary data sources include constitutional document, and citizenship laws. Secondary data is drawn from indexed scholarly articles, books, and reputable media. The article uses Religious Nationalism Theory and Neoclassical Realism as its theoretical framework to analyze the domestic ideological dynamics underpinning Hindutva and the filtering mechanisms in India’s foreign policy. The study finds that the legal architecture of the CAA-NRC fosters systemic discrimination and the risk of statelessness, particularly targeting Muslims, while the removal of Article 370 undermines collective political autonomy through centralized control. Despite widespread criticism from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, India maintains strategic partnerships with Gulf states, driven by pragmatic economic interests that outweigh pan-Islamic solidarity. This article contributes by integrating constitutional and diplomatic analysis within an ethno-religious framework, clarifying the interconnectedness of domestic policy and international relations. It fills a gap in the literature on the linkages between majoritarian domestic policies and global response, providing an analytical framework for policy development, human rights advocacy, and international relations research in pluralistic democracies

    No full text
This study aims to explore and analyze the practice of strategic planning in Islamic education at two Muhammadiyah elementary schools, namely SD Muhammadiyah Terpadu Sendang Agung and SD Muhammadiyah Bandar Jaya. The background of this research departs from the importance of institutional strategies in responding to the challenges of Islamic education in the midst of social, cultural, and national education policy changes. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design, involving in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation as data collection techniques. The results of the study show that both schools have formulated a vision and mission that reflects Islamic values through a participatory process. The main challenges faced include limited resources, the influence of external values, and a weak understanding of strategic management. The implementation of the strategy is carried out through various religious programs and strengthening governance, but its effectiveness depends on leadership and stakeholder involvement. The evaluation of strategies typically takes an administrative approach and lacks long-term evaluative tools. This research emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive strategic evaluation system and the repositioning of policies based on data and Islamic values. These findings make a theoretical and practical contribution to the development of Islamic education management at the primary school level

    No full text
(Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic) learning model in improving students’ understanding of movement dynamics in the traditional Tari Umbul dance, taught through the Cultural Arts and Craft (SBdP) subject in elementary school. The research was conducted at SDN Sindangwangi with 15 third-grade students as participants. Using a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, data were collected through cognitive and psychomotor tests, observation, and documentation. The VAK model was integrated into four structured learning sessions that combined visual media (videos, slides), auditory elements (verbal explanation, music), and kinesthetic activities (direct dance practice). The results showed a significant increase in both cognitive and psychomotor learning outcomes. The mean pretest score for cognitive skills was 58.3 and increased to 81.6 in the posttest, while the mean psychomotor score rose from 50.5 to 82. The N-gain scores were 0.56 for cognitive and 0.64 for psychomotor domains, both categorized as moderate effectiveness. Statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test confirmed that the improvement was significant (p < 0.05). Observational data also supported these results, showing higher student engagement, confidence, and motivation during VAK-based instruction. The study concludes that the VAK model not only provides a meaningful multisensory learning experience but also contributes to the enrichment of culturally responsive pedagogy in elementary schools. By integrating local cultural content with multisensory strategies, this approach strengthens active learning, supports holistic student development, and offers a practical framework for enhancing the preservation and transmission of traditional arts within formal education

This research aims to analyze the transformation of history learning based on local wisdom in fostering historical awareness in generation Z at MA Matik Al Uswah Banyuwangi. The background of this research is based on the need to strengthen students' historical identity and character through a contextual, meaningful, and local culture-based approach in the midst of strong digitalization and globalization currents. The methodology used is a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The research informants consisted of a history teacher (Yumna), a school principal (Ustadz Oky), and a grade XII student (Fahat Indra Tanaya and Anugrah Zulkarnaik Saputra). The results show that the integration of local wisdom in history learning makes a significant contribution to improving student understanding, emotional engagement, and character. Digital media such as documentary videos, project based learning, and virtual tours of local historical sites have proven effective in building connections between teaching materials and students' real lives. Another important finding is the increase in critical thinking skills and appreciation of local cultural values. This finding shows that history learning innovations based on local wisdom and supported by digital technology are able to become a transformative and adaptive learning model to the characteristics of generation Z. This study recommends the expansion of this model to other educational units to strengthen students' character education and historical literacy in a sustainable manner in the era of disruption. Ultimately, this research not only contributes to strengthening character education and historical literacy but also offers a scalable framework for educational transformation in the era of disruption, ensuring history learning remains relevant, engaging, and culturally grounded

    No full text
The study analyzed the mediating role of lifestyle in the influence of perceived behavioral control on the coffee consumption behavior of the Tulungagung community. Method Design and Sample: This quantitative study employs an explanatory research approach using a survey method, considering the research problems and objectives. The questionnaire was developed based on the research variables, namely perceived behavioral control, consumption behavior, and lifestyle. Data were collected from 100 respondents who constituted the study sample. Data collection was conducted using random sampling among coffee shop visitors in Tulungagung Regency, East Java, Indonesia. Data analysis was performed using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) approach with SmartPLS software. Results: The hypothesis testing results indicate that both lifestyle and perceived behavioral control (PBC) have a significant effect on consumption behavior. The analysis shows that lifestyle positively affects consumption behavior, meaning that the higher a person’s lifestyle, the higher their consumption behavior. Additionally, PBC positively influences both lifestyle and consumption behavior, indicating that higher PBC corresponds to higher lifestyle and consumption behavior. Furthermore, the study found that PBC has an indirect effect on consumption behavior through lifestyle, suggesting that PBC can influence consumption behavior indirectly by enhancing lifestyle. These findings highlight the importance of considering psychological and behavioral factors in understanding individual consumption behavior. The study’s implications suggest that marketers can develop more effective marketing strategies by taking into account consumers’ lifestyle and perceived behavioral control. Moreover, the research can increase consumer awareness of the factors affecting their consumption behavior, enabling them to make more informed decisions

The Rights of Children from Illegal Marriages of Indonesian Migrant Workers (TKI) in Selangor, Malaysia: A Review from the Perspective of Child Protection Law

    No full text
The phenomenon of illegal marriages among Indonesian Migrant Workers (TKI) in Selangor, Malaysia, especially in the Gombak area, has raised serious legal and social issues, especially concerning the protection of children's rights. Marriages that are not officially registered (nikah siri) cause children from these relationships to face difficulties in obtaining identity documents, citizenship status, access to education, and other basic services. This situation reflects the gap between the legal protection guaranteed by Law No. 35 of 2014 concerning Child Protection and its implementation in the context of cross-jurisdictional countries. This study aims to analyze how the Child Protection Law is applied to children from illegal marriages of TKI abroad, with a focus on access to education and legal status. The method used is a juridical-empirical approach through descriptive qualitative research, with data collection through interviews, field observations, and document studies in the TKI community of SB Sungai Mulia, Gombak, Malaysia. The results of the study indicate that although Law No. 35 of 2014 provides a strong legal basis, its implementation abroad faces major obstacles, including the limitations of Indonesian legal jurisdiction, strict Malaysian regulations, and minimal administrative awareness of Indonesian migrant workers. Data from 2024 recorded that more than 5,400 children of Indonesian migrant workers in Selangor were born from unregistered marriages, with the majority not yet having citizenship status. The Indonesian government has sought solutions through the overseas marriage validation program, the issuance of Birth Registration Certificates (SPL), and the establishment of non-formal learning centers. However, structural obstacles and suboptimal bilateral policies still hinder the fulfillment of children's rights in full

Tajdid Nikah: Legal Analysis, Ulama Perspectives, and Maslahah Mursalah (A Case Study in East Lampung Regency)

    No full text
This study examines the phenomenon of tajdid nikah (renewal of the marriage contract) among Muslim couples in Giriklopomulyo Village, Sekampung District, East Lampung Regency, with a focus on cases involving pregnancy prior to the official marriage. Although both Islamic law and the Compilation of Islamic Law (KHI) Article 53 confirm that such marriages are valid without requiring re-contracting, tajdid nikah remains prevalent due to societal pressure, cultural norms, and insufficient legal literacy. Using a qualitative case study approach with data from interviews, documentation, and field observations, this research systematically analyzes five key dimensions: the definition of tajdid nikah, local chronology of its practice, its legal interpretation under KHI, contemporary ulama perspectives, and its relevance within the framework of maslahah mursalah. The findings show that tajdid nikah is often pursued not for legal necessity but to achieve psychological relief, family acceptance, and perceived social legitimacy. While some scholars tolerate the practice as a form of precaution (ihtiyat), most ulama assert that it is unnecessary if the first marriage contract was valid. In terms of maslahah mursalah, tajdid nikah can be viewed as beneficial when it reduces stigma and promotes harmony but may be harmful if it reinforces public misconceptions about Islamic legal norms. Therefore, tajdid nikah should not be institutionalized as a religious obligation, and broader legal education is needed to align community practices with sharia principles and Indonesian legal standards
