Qawm, Ummah, dan Syuʿūb dalam Tafsir al-Qur’an: Basis Teologis Nasionalisme Inklusif di Negara Multikultural
This study analyzes how the Qur'an and the Prophet’s Hadith perceive love for one’s homeland (ḥubb al-waṭan) and its implications for Muslim loyalty to the modern nation-state, particularly in the context of Indonesia. The research is motivated by persistent suspicions from certain groups regarding the allegiance of Muslims to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). Using a descriptive-analytical method combined with a thematic approach to Qur’anic interpretation (tafsīr mawḍū‘ī), this study draws upon classical and contemporary tafsir literature to examine key terms such as qawm, ummah, and shuʿūb. Although these terms are not directly equivalent to the modern concept of “nation,” they reflect the Islamic view of collective identity and social solidarity. The findings demonstrate that neither the Qur’an nor the Hadith oppose love for one’s homeland; rather, both affirm it as a natural human disposition consistent with Islamic ethical principles. Moreover, the study contends that love for religion and love for country should not be seen as conflicting values, as they operate within different yet complementary spheres. These findings contribute to a broader understanding of the compatibility between Islamic teachings and national identity, challenging misconceptions regarding Muslim disloyalty to the state
Hakikat Tauhid dalam Al-Ikhlāṣ dan Koreksi Konsep Ketuhanan menurut Al-Simnānī dalam ‘Ayn al-Ḥayāt
Surah Al-Ikhlāṣ serves as a core articulation of monotheistic doctrine in the Qur’an and holds profound spiritual significance within the Sufi tradition. This article explores the Sufi interpretation of Surah Al-Ikhlāṣ in ʿAyn al-Ḥayāt, a seminal work by the 13th-century mystic al-Simnānī. Employing a qualitative approach with textual-hermeneutical analysis, the study investigates the esoteric dimensions of aḥad and Ṣamad as theological concepts that transcend rational monotheism. Instead, they offer a metaphysical foundation for divine transcendence that guides the sālik (spiritual seeker) toward the realization of God. The findings reveal that aḥad is interpreted as the Absolute Divine Essence, beyond comprehension or analogy, while Ṣamad denotes God’s self-sufficiency, reflecting absolute perfection and the ontological dependence of all beings upon Him. These interpretations carry direct implications for spiritual practice, encouraging detachment from worldly ties as a path to pure tawḥīd consciousness. This study contributes to the development of Sufi Qur’anic hermeneutics and opens new perspectives for engaging Qur’anic spirituality in a more transformative and applicable manner within contemporary Islamic thought
Pola Hidup Sehat dalam QS. al-Aʿrāf Ayat 31: Analisis Prinsip Verifikasi Alfred Jules Ayer
This article examines the application of logical positivism, specifically Alfred Jules Ayer’s verification principle, to QS. al-Aʿrāf [7]: 31 in constructing the concept of a healthy lifestyle. Employing a qualitative method with a library research approach, the study is grounded in the philosophy of language, which views linguistic expressions, sentences, symbols, and signs, as bearers of meaning that can be theoretically disclosed through interpretation. As a prominent figure of logical positivism, Ayer formulated the verification principle to assess the meaningfulness and truth of propositions through empirical validation. In this study, the verification principle is not directed at testing the truth of Qur’anic revelation per se, but at analyzing the extent to which the practical implementation of the verse can be empirically correlated with findings in health sciences. According to Ayer, a statement is meaningful insofar as it is verifiable through experience. The findings indicate that many contemporary diseases are closely associated with dietary habits, particularly excessive food consumption. This observation is in line with QS. al-Aʿrāf [7]: 31, which cautions against excess in eating and drinking. Medical research further supports this principle, demonstrating that overeating significantly increases the risk of serious diseases later in life. Accordingly, this study concludes that QS. al-Aʿrāf [7]: 31 is strongly verifiable, as its normative guidance exhibits a clear empirical correspondence with established health expertise
Pendekatan Historis-Kronologis Tafsir Nuzūlī dalam al-Tafsīr wa al-Ḥadīth Karya Muḥammad ‘Izzat Darwazah
This study examines the Qur’anic interpretive method based on tartīb al-nuzūl developed by Muḥammad ‘Izzat Darwazah in his work al-Tafsīr al-Ḥadīth. Departing from classical exegetical traditions that adhere to the canonical arrangement of the muṣḥaf, Darwazah structures his interpretation chronologically according to the order of revelation in order to trace the historical development of Qur’anic themes, legal principles, and the prophetic strategies of the Prophet Muḥammad. This research employs a qualitative library-based method with a descriptive-analytical approach, drawing on Darwazah’s tafsir, works on Qur’anic hermeneutics and tafsir methodology, and relevant contemporary studies. The findings demonstrate that the nuzūlī method offers a significant contribution to Qur’anic understanding, particularly in elucidating the gradual nature of Islamic legislation, situating verses within their sociohistorical context, and applying a critical stance toward weak narrations and Isrā’īliyyāt. Moreover, Darwazah rejects the doctrines of abrogation (naskh) and scientific exegesis, while emphasizing the universality of Qur’anic wording in conveying its message. Academically, this study positions Darwazah’s nuzūlī approach as an alternative paradigm within modern tafsir methodology debates, bridging historical consciousness and thematic coherence in Qur’anic interpretation. The study concludes that Darwazah’s approach provides a historical, thematic, and relatively objective framework that remains relevant for the development of contemporary Qur’anic studies
Insights Beyond the Revolution of Iran: A Review of Moral and Philosophical Values in the Political Realm of Imam Ayatollah Khomeini
The Islamic Revolution in Iran serves as a notable example of the erosion of moral values and political ethics. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of Imam Khomeini's concept of Wilāyah al-Faqīh in relation to the moral philosophy that underpins a nation. The research primarily employs library sources and utilizes a descriptive analysis method. The primary data consists of Imam Khomeini's thoughts on Wilāyah al-Faqīh, as articulated in his work Hukumat-e Islami: Velayat-e Faqih. Secondary data is drawn from his other writings, such as Islam and Revolution: Islamic Government along with additional relevant literature. The data collection process involves several steps: identifying literature that discusses Imam Khomeini's thought, reading and concentrating on his ideas, noting key points, and seeking other pertinent references. The data analysis employs content analysis and hermeneutic models, which are conducted in three main stages: data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings of this research uncover a profound relationship between Islamic political ethics and Imam Khomeini's concept of Wilāyah al-Faqīh. In a government based on Wilāyah al-Faqīh, there is no separation between religion and politics, as both realms share the common objective of establishing a just society rooted in God's law. For Imam Khomeini, politics is an extension of ethics, whereby ethics encompasses both individual conduct and social responsibilities
The Purposes of Marriage and its Hierarchy according to Al-Ghazālī on the Iḥyā’ Ulūm al-Dīn based on Mubādalah Perspective
Al-Ghazālī is recognized as a distinguished scholar who adeptly integrates the principles of fiqh ‘Islamic jurisprudence’ with tasawwuf ‘Islamic mysticism’, achieving a balance between naqlī ‘transmitted knowledge’ and 'aqlī ‘rational knowledge’, as articulated in his seminal work, Iḥyā' 'Ulūm al-Dīn. However, his perspectives on women's issues, particularly regarding the purpose of marriage, have been characterized as non-moderate, prompting some scholars to label him a misogynist. This study aims to elucidate and analyze Al-Ghazālī's views on the purpose of marriage and its hierarchical structure through the lens of Mubādalah ‘reciprocity’. This research employs qualitative literature review methodologies supported by a philosophical framework. Primary data are sourced from Al-Ghazālī's works, namely Iḥyā' 'Ulūm al-Dīn and Kasr al-Shahwatain. Secondary data encompass a range of academic books, journal articles, and additional references that substantiate the research findings. The collected data are subjected to descriptive-analytical techniques for thorough review and analysis. The research outcomes indicate the following: First, Al-Ghazālī highlights the hierarchy of marriage purposes grounded in the levels of maqāṣid al-syarī’ah, which consist of ḍarūriyāt ‘necessities’, ḥājiyāt ‘needs’, and taḥsīniyāt ‘desirables’. Second, from the perspective of Mubādalah, Al-Ghazālī's views on the purpose of marriage, as presented in Iḥyā' 'Ulūm al-Dīn, do not align with the principles of Mubādalah and exhibit gender bias. This misalignment is evident in several aspects: (1) At the pre-marriage stage, Al-Ghazālī positions men as the decision-makers in the selection of a spouse, while women are relegated to the status of the chosen objects. (2) There exists an incongruity between the hierarchy of marriage goals from Al-Ghazālī's perspective and the principles of Mubādalah. (3) Al-Ghazālī delineates the husband-wife relationship within a superior-inferior framework. (4) He emphasizes the roles of women primarily within domestic spheres. Al-Ghazālī's views are undoubtedly shaped by the socio-historical context of his era, as well as his identity as a şūfi. This research aspires to contribute to the discourse surrounding the evolution of Islamic family law legislation, advocating for the recognition and safeguarding of women’s rights and roles in a more equitable manner
Evolving Dynamics of Moderate Islamic Discourse on Indonesian Social Media
Social media not only creates a new public sphere for the expression of religious activities but also serves as a contested arena for religious discourse. In Indonesia, one of the key discourses under contention is moderate Islamic discourse. This article addresses two primary questions: First, what forms does contested moderate Islamic discourse take on social media, and what strategies are employed in these contests?. Second, what factors contribute to the emergence of these contestations surrounding moderate Islamic discourse on social media?. Using Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis as a theoretical framework, this research explores qualitative data gathered through the observation of YouTube videos. The findings indicate that the contestation of moderate Islamic discourse on YouTube occurs not only between traditional and new religious authorities, as is often assumed, but also among traditional religious authorities themselves. These groups compete to articulate the true and ideal meaning of moderate Islam. The contestation is driven by a combination of ideological, economic, political, and socio-cultural factors that influence the digital sphere in Indonesia
Social Innovation in Faith-Based Organizations: The Role of Nahdlatul Ulama in Preventing Early Adultery and Sexual Violence Among Indonesian Youth
Family issues are at the heart of challenges like early marriage and sexual violence. Historically, these problems have been regarded as private matters, making them difficult to address. As the smallest unit of society, the family plays a vital role in tackling these issues. Nahdlatul Ulama, the largest mass organization in Indonesia, has pioneered an important approach by emphasizing the family as a key solution to these challenges. This article explains social innovation in preventing early marriage and sexual violence among young people with a study of the Gerakan Keluarga Maslahah Nahdlatul Ulama (GKMNU) movement. This research uses an qualitative approach with participatory observation and in-depth interviews taking locations in three regions, including Pekalongan Regency, Pekalongan City and Batang Regency. This research analyzes social movement theory and incorporates social innovation concepts. The results of this research show that the GKMNU has implemented several empowerment programs for the community including (1) Maṣlaḥah and Ma’rūf Relations, Good Parenting; (2) Healthy Family (3) Prosperous Family which contains messages of increased income, assets, resilience and (4) Educated Family. The GKMNU program runs using a cultural and structural approach in building a movement that has been proven to have a significant impact on society. The results of this research recommend that GKMNU become a movement that continues to be carried out by continuing to involve all elements and stakeholders of society and continuing to innovate
Wali al-Nikāḥ Hierarchies in Theory and Practice: Disputes, Authority, and Social Reality in Indonesian Muslim Communities
This article examines the problematic social practices related to the appointment of Wali al-Nikāḥ (marriage guardians) in Kotagajah Subdistrict, Central Lampung Regency, Indonesia. The focus lies on conflicts surrounding the rejection of Wali al-Nasab (lineal guardians) by the bride's family, disputes among multiple guardians within the hierarchical structure, and unauthorized delegation of wali. This study explores the tension between the normative framework of Islamic law regarding Wali al-Nikāḥ and the lived realities of marriage practice at the community level. To address this issue, a qualitative fieldwork approach was employed using a socio-legal lens. Data were collected through interviews with penghulu (marriage registrars), religious leaders, and families who have experienced guardianship disputes, supported by administrative documents from the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA) and references from classical fiqh texts and Indonesian marriage law. The findings reveal various forms of conflict in marriage proceedings, including the moral disqualification of biological fathers, internal family disputes over rightful guardianship, and administrative manipulations such as "declaring the guardian deceased" to secure the appointment of a Wali al-Ḥākim (judicial guardian). These phenomena indicate a disjunction between fiqh-based legal norms and social dynamics, often leading to compromise. This study highlights the need to critically reassess the wali hierarchy's structure in Islamic law and develop more responsive legal mechanisms that better reflect social realities
