Implementation Character Building of Tolerance through Religious Moderation in Early Childhood Education Institutions
This study aims to describe the implementation of character building of tolerance through religious moderation in Early Childhood Education (PAUD) institutions in Musi Rawas Regency. The research approach used is descriptive qualitative with research subjects consisting of teachers, principals, and parents of students in several PAUD institutions. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results show that the instillation of character building of tolerance through religious moderation is implemented through integrated learning with moderation values such as mutual respect, appreciation of differences, cooperation, and empathy. Teachers act as role models and facilitators in shaping children's behavior through role-playing activities, storytelling, singing, and collaborative activities that foster a moderate attitude and mutual respect. Supporting factors for successful implementation include the commitment of teachers and principals, the support of a harmonious social environment, and the active role of parents. The main obstacles lie in teachers' limited understanding of the concept of religious moderation and the lack of supporting learning media. This study confirms that instilling a character of tolerance through religious moderation in PAUD institutions plays an important role in shaping a generation of children who are noble, peace-loving, and ready to live in diversity from an early age
Moral Value Kisah Nabi Yusuf Perspektif Filsafat Sejarah
This study examines Surah Yusuf, described as the best story in Surah Yusuf verse 3, through a thematic approach based on the interpretative perspective of historical philosophy. In academic studies, the interpretation of Surah Yusuf is often limited to historical narratives or moral lessons, without emphasizing the universal values that can be applied to modern life contexts. This research aims to bridge that gap by exploring the wisdom embedded in the story of Prophet Yusuf and its relevance in shaping contemporary life values. Utilizing a library research method with a thematic interpretation approach and descriptive-synthetic data analysis, this study focuses on uncovering the moral and spiritual values from the narratives of Prophet Yusuf in Surah Yusuf as a source of exemplary guidance. The findings reveal that the story of Prophet Yusuf offers key lessons, such as patience in facing trials, the ability to control desires, a forgiving attitude, and resilience in overcoming despair. These values are not only moralistic but also relevant in fostering individual character to address the challenges of modern life
Religious Moderation Among Generation Z Indonesian Muslims: A Dialectical Analysis of Understanding and Practice
This article examines the narrative patterns of the Islamic Generation Z in Metro, Indonesia, with a focus on the interplay between understanding and the practice of religious moderation. The discussion is motivated by the significant influence of Islamic discourse in both the virtual and real lives of this generation. This influence is evident in the diverse Islamic studies disseminated by individuals from this demographic, as well as by scholars, ustāż, ulema, and kiai, through pengajian ‘religious gatherings’ and various digital Islamic platforms such as www.muhamamdiyah.or.id, NU Online, Islam Digest on Republika Online, www.muslim.or.id, islami.co, YouTube, and others. This Islamic discourse functions as a barometer for Generation Z Muslims, guiding them in the proper and proportional practice of their faith in everyday life. To foster a robust understanding of Islam, Generation Z requires a framework that considers their level of comprehension and the ease of practice. In reality, they often face challenges in sifting through the diverse information available to them, making it difficult to use it as a reliable guideline for their actions, speech, and thoughts. The findings presented in this article stem from field research utilizing a single instrumental case study approach. Data collection methods included non-participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, with analysis conducted at various stages of the research process. The results reveal two distinct types of Islamic narratives among Generation Z. The first is the functional dialectical narrative, which is grounded in logical, empirical, and methodological scientific studies and is effectively applicable in religious and social interactions within a pluralistic society. The second type is relational dogmatism, characterized by a religious narrative rooted in binding and fundamental textual arguments (fiqhiyyah-muqayyadah). This narrative serves as a singular guideline for spiritual and social interactions in a pluralistic context
Cultural and Environmental Dynamics in Social Transformation: The River-to-Land Transition in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia
This study investigates the socio-cultural transformation of the Bakumpai community in Tumbang Samba, Central Kalimantan, driven by a major shift from river-based to land-based life. Traditionally reliant on riverine systems for livelihood, mobility, and identity, the community has undergone fundamental changes due to infrastructure development and the prohibition of illegal logging and mining. The objective of this research is to explore the dynamics of social change in this context, particularly how internal resilience and external pressures intersect to shape new social patterns. Employing a qualitative research design, the study used interviews, observations, and applied grounded theory through open coding procedures to generate conceptual categories. The findings reveal five key domains of transformation: spatial reconfiguration, occupational transition, technological integration, reorganization of social relations, and cultural reinterpretation. These shifts mark a profound redefinition of identity, economy, and interaction—from water-bound collectivism to land-based functional differentiation. The adoption of mobile technology, the relocation of settlements and trade centers, and the diversification of economic activities signify a move toward a digitally connected land society. In conclusion, the study offers a substantive theory of transition from river dependency to networked land adaptation, demonstrating how communities co-produce change by blending traditional values with modern modalities in response to policy, infrastructure, and ecological restructuring

Javanese Philosophy-Based Islamic Religious Education: Synergy of Tepa Selira and Cablaka Values in Developing Students’ Mental Health
This article explores the synergy between Islamic religious education and Javanese philosophy, specifically the values of tepa selira (empathy and tolerance) and cablaka (honesty and openness), as a strategy to foster the mental health of Generation Z students. Amid the rapid wave of digitalization and social pressures affecting today’s youth, mental health has become a critical issue that can no longer be overlooked. Generation Z, living in an instant and highly competitive environment, is vulnerable to stress, anxiety, and identity crises. Therefore, an educational approach is needed one that not only emphasizes cognitive religious aspects but also considers emotional and social balance. This study uses a qualitative approach through a literature review and critical analysis of sources related to Islamic education, educational psychology, and Javanese culture. The findings show that tepa selira cultivates students’ empathy, social awareness, and emotional regulation skills. Meanwhile, cablaka encourages the courage to express oneself honestly and supports psychological well-being. These two values align with Islamic teachings on noble character and inner balance, making them highly relevant for integration into the Islamic Religious Education curriculum. This integration allows students to develop mental health not only through spiritual rituals but also through cultural values. Javanese-philosophy-based Islamic religious education has the potential to become a contextual, humanistic educational model that addresses the essential aspects of youth development in the digital era
Symbolic Power and the Discursive Construction of Obedience: Media Representations of Kiai–Santri Relations in the Context of Bida’ah Series
This study examines the dynamics of power and obedience in the kiai-santri relationship as represented in the Malaysian series Bida'ah, by emphasizing the pesantren institution as a space for the production of symbolic power. The focus of this study is in the realm of sociology of power, media, and religious culture. This research is important because media representations play a role in shaping public perceptions of traditional authority structures in Malay Islam. The research method used is qualitative-ethnographic with a sociological-cultural approach, through narrative observation of the Bida’ah series and in-depth interviews with seven alumni of pesantren salaf in Jember, East Java. The results show that the kiai figure is represented as a symbolic power center with inviolable spiritual-charismatic authority, while santri show structural and emotional obedience within a patron-client framework. Non-verbal communication symbols and a culture of “pekewuh” reinforce this structure of domination. The findings also show symbolic resistance and reinterpretation of values by santri as a form of negotiation against the kiai's authority. This research contributes to broadening the understanding of power relations in traditional Islamic education and how popular media reproduce or criticize these structures. The findings suggest the importance of revisiting the dominant narrative in pesantren culture to be more inclusive of social change and critical thinking
The Commodification of Piety: Negotiating Zuhud and Consumerist Subjectivities among Students in Modern Islamic Boarding Schools
Modern Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Indonesia have traditionally instilled the value of zuhud—simplicity and detachment from worldly materialism—as a core principle of Islamic spirituality. However, modern pesantren increasingly enroll students from upper-middle-class families, who bring exposure to consumer culture, creating a fundamental tension between religious teachings that emphasize zuhud and the pervasive influence of consumerism, which celebrates material acquisition and social status. This study examines how female students (santri) at modern pesantren navigate the tension between Islamic values of zuhud and the pressures of contemporary consumer culture. This research addresses a critical gap in understanding how young religious women actively negotiate these competing influences, rather than passively accepting either religious doctrine or consumer messages. It reveals how female students (santri) reconstruct their religious identity to create contemporary forms of religiosity relevant to modernity. Using Baudrillard's theory of consumer society and Bourdieu's theory of field, habitus, and social capital, a case study was conducted at Assalaam Modern Islamic Boarding School in Sukoharjo through in-depth interviews with 15 female students who had lived there for 3-6 years and came from upper-middle-class economic backgrounds. The findings identified three negotiation types: Minimalist-Pragmatic Students, who maintain simplicity through structured consumption; Selective Negotiator Students, who develop religious justifications to legitimize consumption; and Adaptive Consumer Students, who are highly influenced by peer groups and social media. All respondents acknowledged the influence of social media, with the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) being the primary driver for purchasing expensive items. Brand dominance (Rabbani hijabs, Adidas, Nike, Corkcicle) creates conformity pressure. The research reveals that female students (santri) actively reconstruct religious identity to accommodate modern realities, creating contemporary zuhud—a reinterpretation of simplicity as religiously responsible consumption rather than complete material rejection. Female students (santri) are active agents constructing a blend of religious-consumer identities, creating a new form of religiosity relevant to modernity
Repositioning Ibn ‘Aṭiyyah in the Genealogy of ‘Ilm al-Munāsabah: An Analysis of Muqaddimah al-Muḥarrar al-Wajīz
The dominance of Mashriq-centric discourse in the historiography of al-munāsabah has obscured the epistemological contributions of the Andalusian tradition of exegesis. This study aims to reposition the role of Ibn ‘Aṭiyyah (d. 541 AH) as a conceptual pioneer of this discipline, long before the systematic formulations of al-Rāzī and al-Biqā’ī. Through a genealogical–historical approach combined with close textual analysis of the Muqaddimah of al-Muḥarrar al-Wajīz. This study shows that Ibn ‘Aṭiyyah had already articulated core principles of Qur’anic coherence—tartīb al-ma‘ānī (ordering of meaning), ittiṣāl al-kalām (continuity of discourse), and the rejection of fragmented interpretation—even though he did not yet use the later formal terminology of al-munāsabah. The application of these principles is demonstrated through his careful analysis of the narrative coherence in Surah Āl ‘Imrān verses 52-54, the structural-metaphorical relationship in Surah al-Nūr verses 35-37, and the global thematic continuity between the closing of Surah al-Mā’idah and the opening of Surah al-An’ām. These findings revise the dominant Mashriq-centric narrative by highlighting an Andalusian framework grounded in linguistic, structural, and practical integration as the basis for a more coherent and context-sensitive Qur’anic hermeneutics
Building Students’ Social Awareness through Multicultural Education
Social awareness is a vital character trait shaped by educational patterns and internalized values. One of the most effective ways to cultivate this trait is through multicultural education, particularly when implemented in school settings. This educational approach fosters key attitudes among students—such as respect, acceptance of differences, and the ability to collaborate across ethnic and cultural boundaries. Through these attitudes, students develop a deeper national consciousness grounded in an appreciation for diversity. This study aims to explore effective pedagogical strategies for internalizing cultural diversity values and to identify the challenges educators face in this process. The goal is to move beyond merely recognizing differences as social realities and toward embracing them as strengths that support a harmonious and inclusive society. The outcome of this research is the development of a contextual multicultural education model tailored for school environments. This model seeks to equip students not only with knowledge about cultural diversity but also with the social competencies to act inclusively, fairly, and tolerantly. Multicultural education, therefore, serves as a foundational element in shaping a generation that is aware of human dignity and capable of coexisting peacefully within a pluralistic society. The study adopts a descriptive qualitative method, relying on conceptual analysis of previous research, relevant theories, and credible academic sources to gain a comprehensive understanding of how multicultural education can effectively nurture students’ social awareness.
