    No full text
This study examines the role of power and religion in disciplining State Civil Servants (ASN) in the Palembang City Government, South Sumatra Indonesia, by taking the case of the Fajr Congregational Prayer Movement. The study is relevant due to the widespread indiscipline practices among Indonesian State Civil Servants and the use of religious approach to ASN’s disciplinary. Using qualitative research approach, data in this study obtained through in-depth interviews with government officials, ASN, and religious leaders; and content analysis of online news, Facebook, and Instagram posts. Foucault’s theory of disciplinary mechanisms was applied as analytical framework. Results of this study showed that the Government integrated religious doctrine and piety control as disciplinary instruments. This approach introduces a new dynamic in monitoring civil servant behaviour, differing from conventional bureaucratic practices. The research offers a new perspective on the relationship between power, religion, and bureaucracy while enriching discussions on variations in disciplinary mechanisms within the context of a majority Muslim country. The findings also suggest avenues for further research on the effectiveness of religious approaches in bureaucratic reform

Revitalizing Islamic Education: The Role of Management and Curriculum Design in Addressing Social Change in Pesantren

    No full text
This study aims to examine how Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) manage and redesign their curricula to respond to the challenges of modernization and social change. The present study employs a qualitative research method of a phenomenological nature. This study was conducted at two educational institutions: the Pondok Pesantren Nurul Ummah Kotagede and the Pondok Pesantren Kotagede Hidayatul Mubtadi'ien (PPKHM). The informants in this study consist of the head of the Madrasah Diniyah, the deputy head of the curriculum department of the Madrasah Diniyah, and teachers at the Madrasah Diniyah. The data collection techniques employed in this study encompass in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and document analysis. The data analysis techniques employed the phenomenological data analysis model of Moustakas through researcher reflexivity, textual description, structural description, and extracting the 'essence' of informants' experiences, which reveal "what" and "how" they experience a phenomenon or concept under study. The research findings indicate that the modernization of management and curriculum design in Islamic education at Islamic boarding schools involves: Firstly, the integration of an educational system that combines the salafiyah (traditional) boarding school typology, which focuses on bandongan, sorogan, memorization, and learning methods based on the Kitab Kuning ‘Classical Islamic Texts’ as the primary reference in learning activities at the boarding school, with the Madrasah Diniyah Takmiliyah educational system, which has classical-based learning and includes levels and stages in the learning process, namely I'dad, Ula or Awwaliyah, Wustho, and Ulya, is of particular interest. Secondly, the institution has initiated a practice-based learning program for final-year students. This program is facilitated through community service, specifically via the PKR (Ramadan Activity Program). Additionally, the institution holds religious study sessions with the objective of developing knowledge and religious education for the community

Hegemony, Resistance, and Destabilization of Meaning: Study of the Horeg Sound Fatwa through Ernesto Laclau's Post-Sructuralist Analysis

    No full text
This article examines the contestation of horeg sound meaning through Ernesto Laclau's post-structuralist discourse analysis approach. This study places the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Fatwa of East Java Number 1 of 2025 concerning the use of horeg sound as a nodal point in discourse analysis. This research is conceptually-empirically based with qualitative methods that combine document studies and digital observations of the fatwa text, media coverage, and social media. Data analysis is conducted through three dimensions of post-structuralist discourse analysis, namely; articulation, hegemony, and repositioning of meaning by exploring the relations of equivalence and differentiation between symbols. This analysis positions the fatwa prohibiting horeg sound not to be interpreted simply as a matter of religious law, but this phenomenon reflects the discursive struggle between religious authorities and popular culture. The fatwa functions as an instrument of hegemony of meaning, in which religious authorities attempt to assert moral dominance by categorizing horeg sound as a negative practice articulated with disturbance and haram. This hegemonic effort sparked social resistance, particularly from young people who resorted to symbolic repositioning through the term "carnival sound" as a form of symbolic resistance to religious authority. The research results show that the fatwa actually destabilized meaning and opened up new spaces for contestation within the field of discursivity. This confirms that religious discourse is contingent, fragile, and always open to negotiation of meaning and social resistance

The Spaces of Sekaten: Contesting Islamic Values and Market Logic in the Ritual Landscape of Surakarta, Indonesia: -

    No full text
Sekaten is a Javanese Islamic ritual that was originally designed as a medium of da‘wah, integrating Islamic teachings with local cultural expressions through music, symbols, and ceremonial spaces. While Sekaten is also celebrated in other Javanese courts such as Yogyakarta, the Surakarta version displays a distinctive spatial configuration in which the royal square is dominated by a large-scale commercial night market and its ritual sites are more sharply separated between sacred and profane functions. This study aims to explore the segmentation of space within the contemporary Sekaten ritual in Surakarta and to analyze the shift from its religious orientation toward a celebratory, commodified form. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through field observation, in-depth interviews, and literature study. The findings reveal a spatial triad in the current ritual configuration: the courtyard of the Great Mosque functions as a site for symbolic Islamic da‘wah, the mosque interior serves as a contemplative spiritual space, and the royal square (alun-alun) has evolved into a festive marketplace. This spatial segmentation reflects a broader shift in public perception—where once the ritual emphasized spiritual reflection, it is now increasingly viewed as entertainment and economic spectacle. The study concludes that reinvigorating the ritual’s spiritual dimensions is essential to preserving Sekaten’s identity as a cultural heritage of Javanese Islam amidst the forces of secularization and market commodification

Psychology as a Basis for Islamic Education Curriculum Development

    No full text
The aim of this study is to explore how psychological principles can serve as a basis for creating a more effective and relevant Islamic education curriculum that meets students’ needs at various developmental stages. The study employed a qualitative approach, utilizing library research as its methodological framework. Data were sourced from reputable scholarly literature, and content analysis techniques were applied to ensure the validity and reliability of the findings. The study reveals that Islamic education curriculum development is a complex process requiring a comprehensive understanding of various educational theories and principles. This research identifies a five-step model for curriculum development: (1) performing a goal-and-objective analysis, (2) selecting appropriate approaches, (3) organizing and prioritizing the material, (4) implementing the curriculum, and (5) evaluating the curriculum. A solid foundational basis is essential to guide educators and stakeholders in applying the curriculum effectively. Psychology, particularly developmental and educational psychology, offers valuable insights for designing instructional strategies aligned with students’ cognitive, emotional, and social development. The curriculum should ensure holistic student growth, include both core and elective subjects, and foster meaningful teacher-student interactions. This research contributes to the academic discourse by addressing a gap in existing literature, which often neglects the psychological perspective in Islamic education curriculum design. By proposing a theoretical framework grounded in psychological principles, the study offers a foundation for future empirical research and practical applications. It supports the development of curriculum that are not only academically rigorous but also responsive to the individual development of learners in Islamic educational contexts

Holistic Analysis of Differentiated Learning in Pancasila Education at Sekolah Penggerak in Padang City

    No full text
This study aims to describe the implementation of differentiated learning in the Pancasila education subject at “Sekolah Penggerak” (driving schools), analyze the challenges, and identify the efforts made to optimize its implementation using the indicators of content, process, product, and learning environment differentiation, focusing on students’ learning styles. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The Informants in this study consisted of 30 individuals selected through purposive sampling. Data collection techniques included interviews, observations, and document analysis. The results show that the implementation of learning differentiation based on learning styles at SMAN 9 Padang and SMAN 10 Padang has been carried out, although not yet fully optimal due to shortcomings in planning and execution. In planning through teaching modules, teachers only created general guidelines. For content differentiation, teachers have provided audio-visual materials such as illustrated narrative texts, videos, and PowerPoint presentations. Teachers have applied various teaching methods, but the student worksheets (LKPD) remain uniform. Regarding product differentiation, teachers have not created varied outputs. In terms of learning environment, the arrangement of desks and chairs is sometimes inconsistent with learning activities, affecting student focus.  Pancasila Education teachers at the two “Sekolah Penggerak” have made various efforts to address these challenges. In content, teachers apply classroom differentiation strategies, use movement-themed ice breakers, and attend digital training

Development of a Conflict Resolution Model Design based on Critical Reasoning in Elementary School Learning

    No full text
The conflict that occurred in Cirebon Regency is an example of the division between ethnic groups that have been taking place in Indonesia for more than a decade. The emotional toll of living in a conflict-ridden environment has led elementary school children to imitate conflict behavior in their school settings and in dealing with peers. To prevent the internalization and reproduction of conflict behavior, the role of educators is crucial thus the need for effective conflict resolution models- one of which is through the development of a critical reasoning-based conflict resolution learning model. This article aims to examine two main questions: (1) What educational theories underlie the development of a critical reasoning-based model? and (2) What is the preliminary design of a conflict resolution model in elementary school learning? This research adopts the Sukmadinata development model which simplifies the stages of Borg & Gall's educational R&D approach. The findings of this study reveal that: (1) three main educational theories form the foundation for developing conflict resolution models in Civics education—namely humanistic theory, progressivism, and reconstructionism; and (2) the initial design of the conflict resolution model encompasses five key elements: instructional syntax, social system, classroom management, support systems, and both instructional and nurturant effects. The contribution of this study lies in providing a theoretically grounded and practically applicable model of conflict resolution learning for elementary schools, which is oriented toward the cultivation of critical reasoning. This model not only serves as a pedagogical tool for teachers in areas vulnerable to social conflict, but also enriches Civics learning by integrating peace education and democratic values from an early age
