The Betimbang Tradition and the Construction of Religious Moderation in South Sumatra, Indonesia

    No full text
This study examines the Betimbang tradition in South Indralaya District, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra Province, and its role in constructing religious moderation. The Betimbang is a communal tradition of mutual assistance during wedding receptions that has sparked debate between those who consider it excessive and contrary to Islamic teachings and others who maintain it as valuable local wisdom. This ethnographic study employed participant observation, in-depth interviews with community members and local religious leaders, and literature review to analyze the tradition's implementation and its relationship to religious moderation. The findings reveal that the Betimbang tradition functions as a mechanism for applying Islamic values of mutual assistance (ta'āwun) and social solidarity within extended family networks. Religious moderation is constructed through the integration of local cultural practices with Islamic teachings, facilitated by local religious leaders who provide contextual religious guidance during Betimbang ceremonies. This study contributes to the understanding of how local traditions can serve as vehicles for religious moderation by demonstrating the dynamic negotiation between cultural authenticity and religious orthodoxy in contemporary Indonesian Muslim communities

Social Integration in Multiethnic and Multireligious Communities: A Socio-Cultural Analysis of Intergroup Relations in Makassar, Indonesia

    No full text
This study seeks to analyze the socio-cultural dynamics among multiethnic and religious communities within the Bosowa Indah housing area of Makassar city, with an emphasis on promoting social integration. Utilizing qualitative methods through a case study approach, data were gathered via direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research focuses on social integration and socio-cultural relations, drawing upon theories grounded in functional structural paradigms, including Parsons' AGIL theory and Durkheim's concept of social solidarity, as well as symbolic interactionism and additional population theories. The findings indicate that Bosowa Indah is inhabited by a diverse urban population, with social interactions categorized into three types: formal interaction, informal interaction, and limited interaction. These interactions give rise to social and cultural products, reflected in established systems of values and norms, habits, and community practices that encourage social integration. Social integration is assessed through various dimensions: the establishment of trust among residents, the cultivation of shared values, cultural practices that foster a harmonious and peaceful society, and the development of a common identity. The results of this study offer significant theoretical insights for the advancement of sociology, particularly in the realm of urban sociology within a functional structural paradigm. Additionally, these findings can serve as a valuable reference for multiethnic community groups aiming to sustain social integration

Cultural Integration and Political Consciousness in Qur’anic Exegesis: A Study of the Tafsīr Al-Qur’ān Al-Karīm by Binjai’s Ulama Tiga Serangkai

    No full text
This study examines the Tafsīr Al-Qur'an Al-Karīm authored by the Binjai’s Ulama Tiga Serangkai, Abdul Halim Hasan, Zainal Arifin Abbas, and Abdurrahim Haitami, within the framework of belief systems, cultural integration, and socio-political dynamics in Indonesia. Employing a critical hermeneutic approach and historical discourse analysis, the research investigates how this tafsīr not only interprets sacred texts but also functions as a medium for fostering socio-political consciousness among Muslims. The primary data source is the tafsīr text itself, supported by secondary literature on Qur’anic exegesis in Indonesia and historical studies of the period in which the work emerged. Findings reveal that the tafsīr combines tafsīr bi al-ma’thūr and tafsīr bi al-ra’y methodologies, with a strong emphasis on themes such as jihād, Islamic leadership, and the unity of the ummah. The work illustrates the adaptability of Islamic teachings within diverse social contexts and reflects a critical stance against colonialism and Western cultural hegemony. It also advocates for ethical Muslim leadership. This tafsīr remains pertinent to contemporary Islamic discourse in Indonesia, particularly in areas concerning social justice, political reform, and the interface between Islam Nusantara and transnational Islam. By situating text within context, this work exemplifies how tafsīr can serve both as spiritual guidance and as a vehicle for social transformation

Indigenization of Islam and Local Culture in Manuscript of the Wawacan Nabi Medal

    No full text
As one of the regions with a long history of cultural and religious interaction, the Sundanese people have developed a distinctive literacy tradition in accommodating the influence of Islam. Local texts produced during the Islamization period reflect the creative ways in which communities contextualized new teachings within their cultural worldview. This study examines the Wawacan Nabi Medal (WNM) manuscript as a significant expression of the indigenization of Islam in the Sundanese region. Written in Sundanese and structured in pupuh, the text narrates the life cycle of the Prophet Muhammad while integrating local cultural elements such as language, social values, religious practices, and artistic forms familiar to Sundanese audiences. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using philological and sociocultural methods to understand how Islamic teachings were adapted through the wawacan tradition. The primary source is the WNM manuscript from the collection of Muhammad Supyandi in Jampang Kulon, written in Pegon and containing several pupuh. Data were collected through manuscript inventory, transliteration, and content analysis to identify cultural expressions and Islamic values within the text. The philological work applies the standard manuscript method, using the Supyandi copy as the base manuscript due to its completeness and textual stability, supported by diplomatic transcription, limited normalization, and documentation of significant variants in a critical apparatus. The findings show that WNM represents a harmonious synthesis between Islamic teachings and Sundanese cultural identity. The prophetic narrative is reshaped into poetic form and endowed with ritual meaning, allowing Islam to be internalized not as an external force but as a tradition deeply rooted in local sensibilities. Through this process, WNM stands as a clear example of the successful indigenization of Islam in the cultural landscape of the archipelago

Colonial Appropriation of Economic Authority: Dutch Control over Trade and Shipping in the Riau-Lingga Kingdom

    No full text
This study examines the process of economic authority appropriation by the Dutch colonialists in the Riau-Lingga Kingdom between 1830 and 1909, by analyzing a number of contracts. Instead of using physical conflict, the Dutch colonial government chose contractual agreements as an instrument to seize economic power. This research was conducted using historical research methods. The primary sources used were contracts between the Riau Lingga kingdom and the Dutch government, as well as the Perhimpunan Plakat and other sources collected from the Indonesian National Archives, digital libraries and the Balai Maklumat Pulau Penyengat. Furthermore, the historical facts findings were analyzed using a colonialism approach. This study found that the appropriation of economic power took place gradually through legal mechanisms such as customs and excise regulations, shipping permits, and symbolic regulations on the use of the royal flag. This process transformed the Sultan's position from that of an independent economic authority to a symbolic ruler under the control of the Resident of Riau. The main findings show that Dutch colonialism in Riau-Lingga was not merely political domination, but also a process of institutionalizing economic power through fiscal and shipping regulations. This research fills a gap in the historiography of political economy in the Malay maritime region and can be considered when examining colonialization in Indonesian history from a different perspective

Cultural Constructions of the Life Cycle: An Ethnographic Study of Life Stages in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

    No full text
Understanding the life cycle is an important aspect of cultural studies, as it contains the values, norms, and collective identity of the community that are passed down from generation to generation. This research examines the human life cycle in the cultural perspective of the people of Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta through an ethnographic approach. The life cycle starts from birth, childhood and adolescence, adulthood and marriage, to old age and death. This cycle is understood as a series of rites that are full of symbolic, spiritual and social meanings. Various traditions such as mitoni, puputan, nyanggar, circumcision, and death slametan reflect the way people celebrate and interpret life culturally. The approach used in this research is qualitative with ethnographic methods. The data collection technique in this research is triangulated through three main methods that complement each other, namely participatory observation, semi-structured in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. This research found that tradition not only functions as a celebration of biological transition, but also as a mechanism for value inheritance, identity formation, and strengthening social solidarity. Despite the pressures of globalisation and modernisation, the people of Gunungkidul show efforts to preserve traditions through cultural adaptation and revitalisation, including in local education. By placing nature and community as cultural learning spaces, the cycle of life becomes a mirror of the dynamic interaction between humans, traditions and local values. This study confirms that ethnography shows that culture in the human life cycle in the Gunung Kidul region is the main instrument in shaping human character and maintaining the continuity of the community's collective identity

    No full text
Education dualism cannot be separated from the historical aspects of the colonial era. This policy continues to be debated among academics, particularly with regard to budget policies and the quality of education. This study aims to describe the political implications of education dualism on budget and welfare policies. This research uses a systematic literature review approach comprising four stages: identification, screening, eligibility and conclusions. A total of 626 data items were collected, with 226 items collected from the Scopus database and 226 items from the Google Scholar database. All stages of data collection, screening and reporting were guided by PRISMA. The results showed that the political implications of dualism triggered inequality in the budget and welfare: the budget allocation for religious education was smaller than for general education, which also affected the welfare of educators. Although the government made efforts to equalise, policies between ministries often did not support each other. This research contributes by providing a concrete overview of how the political implications of dualism affect education budget policies and educators' well-being, encouraging the government and stakeholders to implement education system reforms that are more harmonious, efficient and socially just
