Examining the Potential Effects of Prostitution Legalization on Human Trafficking
Get PDFHuman trafficking is a multi-billion-dollar global industry, with the United States ranking among the largest consumers. Among its various forms, sex trafficking accounts for approximately 4.8 million cases within the broader spectrum of human trafficking (Busch-Armendariz, Nale, Kammer-Kerwick, Kellison, Torres, Cook-Heffron, & Nehme, 2016). There is an ongoing debate regarding the legalization of prostitution, with proponents asserting that such a move would lead to a reduction in human sex trafficking. However, this perspective lacks substantial empirical support. Government officials, whether operating at the local, state, or federal level must exercise meticulous scrutiny when considering the creation and implementation of policies and laws. The cautionary principle applies as changes in legislation may not consistently yield the intended outcomes. By examining the complex relationship between prostitution legalization and human trafficking reduction, this paper emphasizes the necessity of evidence-based decision-making in combating the pervasive issue of human trafficking.LEMI

Additionally, veterans have demonstrated a strong sense of duty and commitment to serving their country and communities, which translates well to a career in law enforcement. Furthermore, veterans often possess a strong work ethic, making them well-suited for the demands of the job. Overall, hiring military veterans in law enforcement provides agencies with a pool of talented and dedicated individuals who can enhance their effectiveness in serving and protecting their communities. Exploring the Link Between AMPD Criteria and Racial Discrimination and Microaggressions
No full textAs overt discrimination is becoming less tolerated in the United States, covert
discrimination still persists and has been associated with decreased quality of life due to its impact on mental health (Douds and Hout, 2020). More common forms of covert discrimination have been termed ‘microaggressions’ which represent subtle, automatic statements or behaviors which, consciously or unconsciously, communicate a rudeness, slight, or invalidation of minoritized individuals (Pierce, 1970; Sue et al., 2007). Previous research has identified associations between microaggressions and discrimination to the presence of internalizing symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and trauma symptoms (Lui & Quezada, 2019). Some research has identified mediating factors in the relationship between microaggression, discrimination, and mental health symptoms. For instance, Latino/a adults with higher self-efficacy and ethnic-identity stability had lower rates of association between experiences of ethnic microaggressions and traumatic stress symptoms (Torres & Taknint, 2015). While this study highlighted how identity is connected to discrimination, limited research is available on the associations between microaggressions, discrimination and other personality pathology components. The
proposed study seeks to identify associations between frequency of experienced
microaggressions and discrimination and personality pathology aligning with the
Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD). Self-report survey data from 255 minoritized undergraduate students was used to identify bivariate associations. I hypothesize greater frequency of microaggression and discrimination experiences as well as increased trauma symptoms from discrimination would be associated with higher personality impairment (Criterion A of the AMPD) and elevated severity in maladaptive personality traits (Criterion B of the AMPD)

Red flag laws provide additional protective measures that can be another tool for law enforcement and family members during episodes of mental illness or stress-related concerns. This becomes more critical whenever weapons are introduced during these mental or stress related meltdowns. Family members want to remove the accessibility of weapons from these individuals during these situations to avoid further violence and to allow for enough time to seek out professional help (City of Houston Mayor’s Commission Against Gun Violence, March 2018). Texas law enforcement should work toward the enactment of a comprehensive red flag law for the safety of police officers and the communities they serve. Mental illness and access to firearms is a dangerous combination that can have tragic consequences. Access to weapons can make the situation more volatile and can contribute to potential suicide. Studies indicate that approximately 90% of fatal suicides are the direct result of access to firearms (City of Houston Mayor’s Commission Against Gun Violence, March 2018). Red flag legislation allows law enforcement and family members to file a court order temporarily removing the firearms of an individual or close family member who poses a threat to themselves or others during a mental crisis. The removal of firearms is essential to the safety and well-being of the individual and others during these periods of mental illness or stress-related events. The access or presence of firearms can only make the situation worse and increase opportunities for more severe or deadlier consequences.LEMI
Differences in Algebra I End-Of-Course exam grade level performance of African American students by gender and economic status: A multiyear statewide investigation

The purpose of this journal-ready dissertation was to determine the extent to
which African American boys and girls might differ in their performance on the Texas
state-mandated Algebra I End-of-Course exam. Specifically, the degree to which
differences might exist between African American boys and girls on the Approaches
Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, and Masters Grade Level standards. Performance on
the Algebra I End-of-Course exam was analyzed for the 2016-2017, 2017-2018, and
2018-2019 school years. African American student performance on the Algebra End-ofCourse exam by gender was investigated in the first study, performance on the Algebra
End-of-Course exam of African American girls as a function of their economic status was
investigated in the second study, and performance on the Algebra End-of-Course exam of
African American boys as a function of their economic status was investigated in the
third study.
Method
A causal-comparative research design was present for all three studies. Archival
data were collected through a Public Information Request form submitted to and fulfilled
by the Texas Education Agency Public Education Information Management System for
the 2016-2017, 2017-2018, and 2018-2019 school years.

Findings
Concerning the STAAR Algebra I End-of-Course exam, higher percentages of
African American girls met the three grade level standards (i.e., Approaches Grade Level
standard, Meets Grade Level standard, and Masters Grade Level standard) in all three
school years than African American boys. Statistically significantly higher percentages of
African American girls who were not in poverty met the three Grade Level standards in
all three school years than African American girls who were economically disadvantaged.
Similar results were present for African American boys in that higher percentages of
African American boys who were not in poverty met the three Grade Level standards in
all three school years than African American boys who were economically
disadvantaged. Of concern were the high percentages of African American girls and
African American boys who did not meet any Grade Level standard in the studies for all
three school years. Results of these empirical investigations were commensurate with the
existing literature regarding gender and economic status and their relationship to
mathematics proficiency

The Use of Collaborative Dialogic Practices with Clients who have Experienced Trauma
Get PDFTrauma-informed care has been an important movement in the field of psychotherapy, to which researchers often note the importance of understanding trauma as a necessary component to being a competent clinician. Marriage and family therapy models have been identified to be effective when working with clients who have experienced trauma. Several models of psychotherapy have been identified to successfully treat clients who have experienced trauma. Additionally, there has been common factors identified in models that work specifically with trauma. Although Marriage and family therapy models have been identified to be successful with trauma work, there are no studies exploring collaborative dialogic practices as a possible model to work with clients who have experienced trauma. A phenomenological approach was used to explore the experiences of collaborative dialogic practitioners who work with clients who have experienced trauma. Twelve participants completed semi-structured interviews, resulting in the
development of four themes: 1) language of trauma, 2) relationship building, 3) trust our clients, and 4) it’s in the “how.” These themes were used to provide implications for marriage and family therapists and counselor educators. Limitations and recommendations for future research were also discussed based on the findings of the study

This negative disposition can have a negative influence on an officer’s work performance. Law enforcement agencies should consider the integration of a disciplinary matrix in their organization. Officers deal with enough negativity day in and day out that they should not have to deal with any negativity from within their organization. Officers should be able to trust their superiors and the policies and procedures implemented. Officers should also be able to have an idea of what their punishment may be when they violate a departmental policy or procedure. The integration of a disciplinary matrix in a law enforcement agency will provide these. Researchers have found that the implementation of a disciplinary matrix ensures law enforcement agencies are consistent and fair when administering discipline. Researchers have also found that when agencies use a disciplinary matrix, it provides officers with a predetermined consequence for any violations they have committed.LEMI

The violence sparked by the actions of the police caused billions of taxpayer dollars from the destruction of businesses across the nation. This criticism was projected out by social media platforms, news coverage from the mainstream media, and the communities involved. This affected just about everyone who watches television, and the news, no matter whether they are in the U. S. This unprecedented change derived from actions taken by police officers without proper oversight, with no accountability, and no adequate training. For many years there has been an outcry for change in the governing agencies that have the power to take away freedom from the people in the name of justice. Since those recent tragic events, communities have loudly voiced their demands for police reform. The state legislatures heard their cries, and the U.S. House of Representatives enacted a bill directing the Department of Justice (DOJ) to create uniform accreditation standards for law enforcement agencies that require their officers to complete training on racial profiling, implicit bias, and duty to intervene when another officer uses excessive force (Bass, 2021). There should be laws passed on a federal, state, and local level, mandating law enforcement agencies to implement accreditation programs from a nationally recognized accrediting organization.LEMI
