Analyzing the Relationship between Perceived Attachment to God and Motivations for Prayer
Get PDFEmerging adulthood is a dynamic point in a person’s life where they spend time focusing and developing into the identity that will follow them for their life. An area that this is very prevalent is in regard to their religious activity. The current study aims to assess the relationship between their perceived attachment to God and their motivations for religious activity, primarily regarding their motivations for prayer and the types of prayer the individual endorses using. The goal of this study is to understand whether an individual who endorses a secure perceived attachment to God is more likely to pray for the sake of growing in their relationship to their deity or use prayer as simply a means to some alternative end. Additionally, the study aims to understand what relationship if any exists between attachment to God styles and the types of prayer (petitionary, colloquial, meditative, and ritualistic) one endorses. According to previous literature the more securely attached the individual perceives their relationship to God and the more God focused the prayer the individual has the more psychologically sound the individual generally is. The first article covers background information related to the Maricopa Community College District (MCCCD) sponsored initiative from Fall 2011 through implementation at CGCC in Fall 2017. The article also contains lessons learned from experiences by the researcher. The second article is a thorough literature review of developmental mathematics redesigns and implications for administrators and faculty members. The third article is a descriptive quantitative study that examined the efficacy of the mathematics redesign. Mounted Patrol-Beyond the Parade, Patrol, and Crowd Control
No full textMounted units must move past starting a unit and now look at how to work around and face the many demands being placed on it daily. These demands must take into consideration the continued strain and waning interest of those entering the law enforcement profession. After the increasing numbers of recruits entering law enforcement in the early 1990s, policing has seen a steady decline in citizens wanting to join the law enforcement profession. With the decrease in applicants, state, county, and city government officials have looked at multiple ways to fill needed spots in patrol, jails, and investigations. Many of these options have forced leaders to disband their mounted units. With the growing threat of being disbanded and having to justify a unit�s purpose, mounted commanders should look beyond just parades, patrol, and crowd control. Some opportunities for mounted unit commanders are creating a mounted corps of volunteers to assist with patrolling commercial and rural areas and assisting with barn and community presentations. Mounted units also need to look at cost savings to purchase horses which can be completed through the rehabilitation of estrays as well as inmate horse programs. Mounted commanders also have an opportunity to assist with officer wellness by being a means by which an officer after being involved in a traumatic situation can recover with the aid of equine therapy. This study intends to offer some opportunities for the mounted unit commander to find opportunities to expand their role within the community and the agency.LEMI
When Death Came to Boston: How Religious Cosmology Shaped the Boston Inoculation Controversy
No full textThis study explores the religious beliefs underpinning the Boston inoculation controversy from 1721 to 1722. The research traces the religious cosmologies that framed how Boston ministers advanced a novel cure for smallpox and how two groups opposed them, the Boston laity and Enlightenment deists. Some religious perspectives in the controversy have been fully explored while others have not. No scholar has thoroughly examined the three primary cosmologies at play in the debate. The controversy primarily concerned the legitimacy of the minister’s secular authority. This thesis shows how religious belief, particularly in the supernatural, shaped the minister’s use and the people’s rejection of that authority.
The primary sources surrounding the inoculation controversy have been well-established. The debate raged in pamphlets and Boston’s three newspapers: the Boston News-Letter, Boston Gazette, and the New-England Courant. Cotton Mather’s diary is an exhaustive source for his religious perspective on the debate over ministerial authority and inoculation. Government documents and newspapers reveal how the Massachusetts government and the selectmen of Boston reacted to the epidemic and the introduction of inoculation. Further, these sources contextualize inoculation within New England’s cosmological understanding of foreign affairs: the concurrent plague in Southern France and native hostility in Acadia. This thesis uses pamphlets, newspaper articles, Cotton Mather’s diary, and government documents to better understand how the religious ideas of ministers, laity, and deists wrought conflict over theocratic power. This study uncovered three forces acting on Boston: congregational ministers who had traditionally influenced New England, the devout laity who had supernatural beliefs, and Enlightenment beliefs from Europe. The defeat of the theocracy during the inoculation controversy revealed the threads of religious belief that would come to characterize eighteenth-century British North America. New England was ripe for the supernaturalism and individualism of the First Great Awakening
Beneath the Surface: SCUBA diving for Officer Wellness
No full textLaw enforcement officers face daunting tasks every day. Due to the sheer volume of traumatic incidents officers have encountered and will encounter in their careers, it should not come as a surprise that more and more officers are dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In a profession that deals with split-second, life-or-death decisions, and a macho culture of �suck it up� and move on, it is no wonder officers are killing themselves at rates higher than the public they have sworn to protect. Treatments for stress, anxiety, depression, and PTSD are astronomical. However, there is an unconventional way to combat stress, anxiety, depression, and PTSD, and it is not a pill, does not come in a bottle nor with a prescription. The unconventional method is SCUBA diving. There are costs associated with diving, but, in comparison, it is minimal. There are risks with diving, but, as long as safe diving practices and rules are adhered to, those risks become minimal. Diving has physical and psychological benefits to cope with the stress, anxiety, depression, and PTSD officers are suffering from. SCUBA diving is a social, outdoor activity that improves strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness due to water being 600 times more resistant than air. While diving, there is a sense of peace and tranquility. The breathing techniques used while diving also send the mind and body into a meditative state or trance that lowers stress levels. Also, being underwater, in an almost silent environment, where the only sounds heard are breathing, induces a rhythmic background sound, furthering a mindfulness setting and reducing chronic stress. With the benefits of meditation already known, it is widely suggested that SCUBA diving and its meditative-like experience could improve a person�s mental health.LEMI
Law Enforcement Should Adopt Problem-Oriented Policing
No full textProblem-oriented policing (POP) should be adopted by law enforcement because it is a proactive approach to law enforcement that seeks to identify and address the root causes of crime and disorder in a community (Scott, 2000). POP is based on the premise that by using data and evidence-based techniques, law enforcement agencies can develop tailored solutions to specific problems that are more effective than traditional policing strategies (Eck, 2006). The key objective of POP is to prevent crime from happening in the first place, rather than just responding to it after it has occurred (Hess & Orthmann, 2018). Despite its growing popularity, POP has faced some criticism. However, these criticisms can be countered in several ways. Firstly, advocates of POP argue that it can be implemented in a way that avoids over-policing and promotes community involvement. By involving all stakeholders, including community members and social service providers, POP can be more responsive to the needs of the community (Eck & Spelman, 1987). Secondly, supporters of POP argue that it is not intended to replace broader social and economic policies, but rather to supplement them. POP can be used to address specific problems while broader policies can be put in place to address the underlying social and economic factors that contribute to crime (Weisburd & McEwen, 2018). Finally, while it is true that POP relies on data and technology, it is important to note that these tools are just that, tools.
Ultimately, the success of POP depends on the ability of law enforcement agencies to work collaboratively with the community to develop effective solutions to the problems they face (Hess & Orthmann, 2018).LEMI
Legislating a Police Presence in Texas Public School Districts
No full textThe immense concern for safe and secure schools continues to fuel an intense national debate. Unfortunately, Texas has become the epicenter for this discussion after two tragic events at both Santa Fe High School and Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas. The immediate response to the most recent attacks has been an overwhelming effort to employ and place more licensed peace officers in the state�s public K-12 school districts. As such, when examining the positive effects of the school-based law enforcement officer, one must first consider the immeasurable impact a visible police presence provides in a school environment. Well-trained, carefully selected school-based law enforcement officers not only create a positive influence inside the hallways of Texas public schools but also serve as a visible deterrent to would-be perpetrators looking to instigate fear and harm. Moreover, the undeniable reality is that rapid human engagement must be the response to all active attacks. Recognizing the significant impact a full-time law enforcement officer has in schools, has led to a notable rise in legislative mandates relating to mandatory training requirements for all school-based law enforcement officers. This emphasis on training specifically extends to those peace officers entrusted with safeguarding our most valuable asset, our children. To meet both the expectations of the community and K-12 educational leaders all Texas K-12 public school districts should be legislatively required to employ licensed peace officers or contract with their local law enforcement authority for law enforcement services.LEMI

Throughout their career, officers encounter some of the most dangerous people and situations that the average civilian will never see in their lifetime. Although police officers are perceived by society as tough and resilient, when it comes to developing the adverse side effects from the job, unfortunately, this is not always the case. Sadly, the results of being exposed to years of highly critical incidents involving violence and death lead to significant health-related illnesses. One of the worst health-related illnesses that police officers develop is mental health issues. When annual mental health assessments on police officers go ignored, it has a damaging effect on that officer and their department. Police agencies should mandate annual mental health checkups, which keep the officers' performance high and lower the risk of other medical health illnesses that often lead to police suicides.LEMI

Police departments typically have no policy, or have policies that do not reflect actual practice, setting arbitrary amounts or criteria. Or the agency strictly prohibits the acceptance of all gifts or gratuities and asserts a zero-tolerance position on the practice. Regardless of the policy, policing, and enforcement of infractions is generally varied and inconsistent from agency to agency and often within an organization. In some cases, used to target individuals for disciplinary sanctions. Law enforcement organizations should have policies defining and addressing accepting small gifts and gratuities. The Use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems by Law Enforcement

Those who adapt to rapidly changing technology have an edge over those who are resistant or slow to change. Every successful company knows that change is inevitable in society and that the race is to see who can best utilize current technology, improve it, and develop new opportunities. Law enforcement is no different and must take advantage of new technology. One such development is unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) or drones. The continued advancements and reduction in cost have made drones more affordable for law enforcement. The increased use of drones by law enforcement has proven highly beneficial. According to the City of Chula Vista (2024), drones have reduced response times and eliminated the need to dispatch officers to specific calls. Drones have also been used for search and rescue operations, during search warrant or barricaded suspect calls, and have increased officer and community safety. However, when new technology is implemented by law enforcement, there are always concerns regarding the overreach of constitutional rights and privacy. Due to these concerns, states have implemented requirements that must be followed by law enforcement before implementing a drone program. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also has provisions regarding drone use. Drones have proven to be a valuable tool for law enforcement and other first responders. Drones are used during natural disasters, agriculture surveys, search and rescue, package delivery, and traffic monitoring. The versatility of drones allows deployment into areas where traditional manned aircraft cannot go at a fraction of the price; therefore, law enforcement agencies should utilize unmanned aircraft systems.LEMI
