Effectiveness Of Curriculum Development In Advanced Plant Science In Invasive Species And Agriculture Biosecurity

    Get PDF
The volume and diversity of material that agriculture teachers must be semiefficient in is astronomical in comparison to other disciplines. Texas there are 29 courses that a certified agriculture sciences teacher can teach based upon the local and regional needs. That is why in our study we are looking at developing curriculum Advanced Plant and Soil Science, a course that 144 out of the 1300 high school programs offered to their high school students. Additionally Advanced Plant and Soil science is offered as a science credit in public schools in Texas. This course also coincides with two topics that are seldom discussed in other curriculum materials available to agriculture teachers in Agricultural Biosecurity and Invasive Species. This study will be creating a unit of instruction and curriculum on Agricultural Biosecurity and Invasive Species that align with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in Advanced Plant and Soil Science. We will first develop the material for the instructors and students with assistance from the Texas Invasives Species Institute. Secondly, we will distribute this material to 10 schools across the state of Texas (n = 10) and gather a pre/post-survey that inquires their knowledge and confidence in teaching agriculture biosecurity and invasive species. We will also receive all the students pre/post-test scores, and all quizzes that are encompassed in the curriculum of 11 lessons. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired t-test in comparing students test and quiz scores to evaluate if the material was absorbed. Then using the same analysis to evaluate the pre/post-survey from the instructors on confidence in teaching and if they absorbed any of the material that they are not used to. This in return will help evaluate material effectiveness for both the student and the instructor in a course and topic that does not have substantial research or guides for teachers

An Executive Approach to Ethical Cultures

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to identify the historical contexts and definitions of organizational culture. By determining the values or beliefs sought by an organization, the leaders can identify the physical elements (artifacts) required to create and foster this desired value or belief into the organizational culture. This research and its findings can be applied to any industry, regardless of purpose. Police departments can benefit from the understanding of Edgar Schein’s research and develop a new focus on the implementation of intentionally desired cultural outcomes. The organization should then focus and emphasize ethical decision-making to usher in a new generation of ethical police departments. In addition to the understanding and implementation of organizational relics, the law enforcement executive should purposefully emulate the behaviors they wish to have replicated throughout their agency. While opponents will focus on the cost and time needed to effectively implement these changes, the research shows that the benefits of building a quality culture will far outweigh the associated costs.LEMI

Risk and Rewards: Artificial Intelligence and Critical Infrastructure

    Get PDF
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly used by both public and private sector partners to advance cybersecurity best practice, however, the threat posed by these, and other contemporary threats cannot be understated. The threats posed by AI can be observed every day in email fraud, phishing attacks, and other types of malicious intrusion, with the potential for significant threats to more victims through larger scale attacks. There is further concern about AI tools being leveraged to directly target industrial critical infrastructures, including transportation, pipelines, energy, and other services whose networks are increasingly interconnected (Rinalidi, Peerenboom, & Kelly, 2001). Additionally, cyber threats from actors both foreign and domestic aimed at undermining public trust in government institutions, social cohesion, and the democratic process (Department of Homeland Security, 2023). Combined, these threats have the potential to wreak havoc on the American way of life

The Need for a High School Law Enforcement Program

    Get PDF
Law enforcement continues to be challenged by a poor public perception, which has enormous societal implications, including inadequate support, lack of trust, and inability to recruit and retain personnel. These issues directly affect the overall effectiveness of law enforcement and can create dangerous situations. The ability to combat poor public perception has been a major focus of law enforcement since the early 2000s and continues to evolve. Law enforcement agencies should create and implement a high school law enforcement program. This will allow agencies to effectively promote positive interactions between youth and police. The ability to create positive youth-police interactions not only allows for the rebuilding of trust between communities and the police but also encourages a passion for service amongst youth. This will directly combat the decrease in effective recruitment and retention of personnel. While the defund the police movement and concern over the criminalization of youth may offer opposition, neither have sufficient evidence to effectively dispute the noticeable benefits of creating a high school law enforcement program.LEMI

    Language Teacher's Language Learning Experience

    Get PDF
This autoethnographic diary study encapsulated my attempt at learning Spanish through a commercial, virtual language learning application. Rather than an intended goal of bilingualism or scholarly critique of the selected program, this study was concerned with the phenomenological aspect of consciously attempting to learn a second language to familiarize myself with the experiential element of language learning. Pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), the basis of effective teaching, can be defined as the amalgamation of knowing how to teach (pedagogy) and a thorough insight of the subject matter to be taught (content). The monolingual, English language instructor is perhaps unique in that, simply acquiring English in youth, they lack the experiential element of having learned the content of their discipline—a critical aspect afforded to instructors of seemingly all other fields by default. To address this shortcoming and with the learning of English obviously not an option, I commenced a Spanish-oriented language learning experience (LLE) that ran from July 13 through November 29, 2022. A daily diary was kept and analyzed at the completion of the study. Results yielded a decidedly negative fixation on the program, predicated largely on disdain for the general design and various technical issues that came about. However, my experience provided useful pedagogical takeaways and, though I did not learn Spanish, at least some modicum of the experiential element I sought

    Drug-Impaired Driving: Looking Beyond Alcohol

    Get PDF
The reduction of alcohol-impaired driving has been a priority for many years. While fatalities caused by alcohol-impaired driving have declined since the introduction of Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST), drug-impaired driving has become more prevalent. When it comes to fatal crashes in the United States, drug-impaired driving plays a significant role. A study of 57% of fatally injured drivers revealed that 41% had detectable drugs in their system at the time of their fatal accident (Hedlund, 2017). This is a cause for concern, as drug-impaired driving can be just as dangerous as alcohol impaired driving. Law enforcement officials must recognize this issue and expand their training to drug-impaired driving. Drug-impaired driving is a growing issue as more and more drivers are using drugs while operating a vehicle. This increases the risk of accidents and other dangerous driving behaviors, and law enforcement officers need to be able to identify and respond to those situations. Drug-impaired driving is a crime and drivers who are found to be driving under the influence need to understand the serious consequences that can arise from driving under the influence. Law enforcement agencies with a dedicated patrol division should mandate drug-impaired driving training.LEMI

Artificial Intelligence and Social Network Analysis for Critical Infrastructure Response Networks and Dark Network Threat Analysis

    Get PDF
This project has served as a proof of concept for the use of artificial intelligence such as the large language model (LLM) ChatGPT 4o to create datasets based on large quantities of qualitative data. LLMs have thus demonstrated the capacity to synthesize large quantities of qualitative data and turn them into quantifiable structured data sets that we can then use traditional software packages for social network analysis (SNA). We have demonstrated this using a case study related to the North Houston area and critical infrastructure response networks. We began by gathering a large number of qualitative documents related to congressional testimony, government reports, newspaper articles, among many other sources related to critical infrastructure protection response networks in the North Houston area. We then engaged in a process of prompt engineering to teach LLMs such as ChatGPT how to code this into structured data for SNA. We also took subsets of the data and had humans code them. We were then able to use the human coded data as a comparison point for the quality of the artificial intelligence generated data sets

Change Management Growth Mindset / Fixed Mindset

    Get PDF
The law enforcement community must recognize the tidal wave of change headed in its direction, begin adapting, and ready the profession for transformation. The critical element in strengthening the organization or department for change is preparing for resistance from fixed-mindset employees and adapting and helping those with a growth mindset to continue developing and trying new concepts that will keep them stimulated and excited about the tidal wave of change. Creating a growth mindset within the organization will help drive and improve performance measures and help improve and sustain measurable change. With a fixed mindset, individuals who can change in dire situations could fail. Limiting beliefs about themselves, preventing their full potential from being achieved. Developing a growth mindset is crucial for organizational success in the 21st Century.LEMI
