Development and Evaluation of a Music-Based Math Readiness Intervention Set (MRIS) for Students with Disabilities

    Get PDF
Research in math readiness skill development has increased due to low student performance in math as well as the vital role that math skills play in early language development and reading skills. Music therapists work with clients in many practice areas including special education. Standards of clinical practice state that interventions used with clients to accomplish individual goals should be evidence-based. Evidence can take many diverse forms; there may be obstacles to finding the best evidence. The researcher developed a tool entitled the Math Readiness Intervention Set (MRIS) for use with clients with disabilities to help them learn early math skills. The purpose of this study was to examine the MRIS to identify evidence that it can support achievement of math goals through music therapy. The research questions were (1) What is the evidence that the MRIS can be used as a tool to effectively teach early math concepts? and (2) To what extent does the MRIS adhere to evidence-based practice (EBP) in music therapy intervention development? A body of evidence was compiled and analyzed to answer the research questions. Evidence included examination of the MRIS development process and summaries of research findings in math education and music therapy. Additionally, one MRIS intervention was recorded; a music analysis of the intervention was created by the researcher and feedback on the intervention from two math education experts and two music therapy experts was examined. Analysis of compiled evidence indicated that while the MRIS can be used as a tool to teach early math concepts, modifications are recommended to align with best practices in math education. The answer to research question two revealed mixed adherence to EBP. Limitations of the study included researcher bias and missing evidence. A series of recommendations were made including ways to gather the best evidence for music therapy interventions and considerations for music therapist education. In the area of math education through interdisciplinary collaboration, tools like the MRIS can provide a research-based starting point to help facilitate appropriate teaching and learning of early math concepts

    Ethics In Policing

Ethics is a topic that is vital to law enforcement and should be studied, taught, and practiced by all police departments and police officers. In today’s times, it seems that officers are finding it hard to make the ethical decisions that should be made. Without ethics, police officers will have no trust or support from the public. Within this paper, the topic of ethics will be discussed and explored as to why it is important to be ethical. Topics such as gratuities, lying, intervening, and policies will inform the reader as to the importance of ethics and how one should react in an ethical manner. This study will use books, internet sites, magazine articles, Greenville Police Department policies, and journals to convey the information used. The purpose of this study is to show the need for policies and the need for officers to always be truthful even if it is the unpopular thing to do.LEMI

This phenomenon is framed as institutional compliance, highlighting the complex interplay of bureaucratic rationality and regimes of truth within educational systems. The study offers insights into the nuanced dynamics of tracking practices and their implications for fostering more equitable educational environments

An Evaluation of the Current Infrastructure for Treating Mental Illness In Texas Correctional Facilities

    Get PDF
The state of Texas spent over $750 million on prisoner health care during the fiscal year of 2019. While this ranks among one of the highest in the country, correctional health care continues to experience several organizational problems, including overcrowding and inadequate staffing of medical professionals. One area that has been particularly understaffed with limited resources is psychiatry. While the right to health care assures that prisoners receive attention from a licensed physician (usually with a specialty in internal medicine), staffing of psychiatrists has been a struggle due to set market salaries in a generally undesirable working environment and rural settings where supply of licensed professionals is low. The increase in health care costs and mental health needs each year has led to the use of telemedicine, which allows physicians and/or health care professionals to treat prisoners remotely. However, the use of telepsychiatry as an effective mode of patient care delivery has not been evaluated extensively. This is particularly true of correctional facilities in Texas. As such, much is currently unknown about whether telemedicine can be used to strengthen the infrastructure and delivery of prisoner mental health care while saving Texas taxpayer dollars

Soft Skills in Higher Education and Graduate Employability: A Delphi Study

    No full text
Student employability after college graduation is much debated, as new hires are having trouble not only obtaining a job but maintaining one. Research indicates (e.g., Baird & Parayitam, 2019; Bear & Skorton, 2019) that employers across industries want and need access to a workforce comprised of candidates with a shared knowledge of hard skills and soft skills, as many employers are frustrated with the skills gap in new hires (Jackson, 2008; Robles, 2012). Students in higher education need to be properly prepared for a workforce that demands both technical skills and soft skills. Soft skills are of special interest because researchers (e.g., Majid et al., 2019, Tulgan, 2015) have determined that many new hires are lacking in critical skills like communication, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and dependability. If human capital encompasses the accumulation of skills in the workforce, then new graduates should be imbued with these skills throughout their time in university so that they are a worthwhile investment as part of a skilled labor force. The purpose of this Delphi study was to describe the current state of business graduates’ soft skills in Texas universities as identified by students, employers, and faculty. Three rounds of questionnaires were answered by 33 expert respondents to narrow down those soft skills considered most vital in the workplace and to ascertain to what degree new hires/ new graduates in the business professions had soft skill competencies. Most respondents agreed that soft skills were essential in the workplace. However, while faculty and employers expressed frustration and dissatisfaction with the v soft skill competency in new hires/ new graduates, students voiced confidence in their skill acquisition and believed themselves to be ready for the expectations of industry. The findings of this study demonstrate that soft skills are fundamental components of a competent, trained, and effective workforce. Further, there is effort required to develop collaboration between universities and industry so business college graduates are prepared with the requisite skills for success

Emotional Intelligence in Law Enforcement Professionals

    No full text
The duties of public servants are more complex than what can be handled by using only operational or tactical skills. A key tool in the arsenal of a public servant is the skill of emotional intelligence (EI). Emotions are impossible to escape since they are a part of daily life, so public servants must learn to acknowledge and develop skills in how to handle these emotions. EI includes the critical components of self-awareness – the knowledge of the individual and their feelings in each situation; self-management – the ability to control emotions and know how to properly react; social awareness – the ability to express empathy for others; and relationship management - the ability to make others feel understood and supported. The inclusion of EI in the training and development of these professionals will encourage the self-reflection of their own emotions and emotional responses as well as the emotions and emotional responses of those they encounter in the field. This training can help the public servant understand how emotions can alter an encounter and the development of a strong EI skillset can enhance their communication ability, more effectively problem solve and engage more professionally and effectively with the public. As societal expectations have changed, there is a shift from the once widely accepted and encouraged stoic and tough personas of public servants to a more balanced and emotionally responsive professional. With the increase in scrutiny of public servants, departments should encourage professional growth and development in the skill of EI. Departments should encourage an environment that supports EI development for its personnel.LEMI

Agencies Use of Red Dot Sights

    No full text
In 2023, law enforcement technological advancements seem to occur daily with equipment, vehicles, programs, and training. Departments strive to obtain the best equipment on the market for their officers, whether it be vehicles, the latest and greatest less-than-lethal options, load-bearing vests, breaching tools, body armor, or whatever the case may be. However, there are times that it appears that departments seem to lack when it comes to the area of firearms. Officers rely on each one of the tools that they have at their disposal. One of the most important tools that officers must utilize is the pistol. Even with advancements, law enforcement tends to not mess with or change something that has seemed reliable for so long. When speaking of officer-involved shooting incidents, officers should have every available tool or resource at their disposal. The implementation of red dot sights has been a tool utilized on patrol rifles for quite some time. Yet it has not been utilized on pistols. The traditional iron sights used on pistols could potentially increase adverse outcomes. The utilization of red dot sights can mitigate some of the negative outcomes when it comes to officer-involved shootings. Red dot sights allow an officer to be better aware of his or her surroundings and deliver more accurate shots to a threat minimizing the potential of shooting an unintended target. That is why law enforcement agencies should utilize pistol-mounted red dot sights (RDSs).LEMI
