Rethinking museum shops in the context of the climate crisis
No full textThis paper critically evaluates the role of the museum shop in the context of the climate crisis. Specifically, it considers how museum shops might be reconceptualized as an important facet of visitor communication within the emerging category of climate museums. Theoretically, the paper references the conceptual linkages of material and commodity culture in relation to climate issues, while practically, it frames the shop as a space that can both support exhibition messaging and prompt behavioral changes among visitors that might help reduce their planetary impact. These claims are explored with reference to the concepts of “gestalt” and “nudge” theory. The paper presents three approaches for effecting such changes: 1. Extended exhibition messaging through shop products; 2. Consistency of tone between exhibition and shop spaces; 3. Imposing limits on the shop space to convey environmental messages. Youth Suicide Research: Some Current Challenges and Opportunities

Det eksisterer rammeverk for selvmordsforebyggende tiltak, som omfatter universelle,selektive og indikerte intervensjoner, men hvordan treffer tiltakene unge mennesker? For å besvare dette spørsmålet, gjennomførte vi 1) en systematisk gjennomgang og metaanalyse av nesten 100 studier som undersøkte hele spekteret av selvmordsforebyggende intervensjoner rettet mot unge,og 2) dialog med unge mennesker fra hele Australia. Dette resulterte i et program som ble utviklet spesielt av og for ungemennesker, som aktive samarbeidspartnere i forskningen. I denne artikkelen beskriver vi noen av hullene i dagensforsknings- og forebyggingstiltak som er rettet mot unge, og diskuterer noen av utfordringene og mulighetene somligger i å inkludere unge mennesker som aktive partnere i selvmordsforskning.Rates of youth suicide are increasing. Frameworks for suicide prevention activities exist and span universal,selective and indicated interventions, but how do they apply to young people? In order to answer this question,we conducted i) a systematic review and meta-analysis of almost 100 studies that examined the full spectrum ofyouth suicide interventions, and ii) a consultation with young people from across Australia. These activities ledto a program of work that was specifically developed by and for young people and that has young people as activepartners in the research. In this paper we describe some of the gaps in current youth suicide prevention researchefforts and discuss some of the challenges and opportunities that including young people as active partnersin suicide research presents
Sobre literatura ectópica y traducción: concepto y aplicaciones
No full textLa literatura ectópica ha demostrado ser un concepto flexible y preciso que permite dar cuenta de las particularidades de los textos literarios producidos fuera del entorno de origen de un autor o autora, así como abordar sus traducciones. En este artículo se intenta situar, partiendo de una visión traductológica, el concepto en relación con otros cercanos y complementarios, como la literatura intercultural, la literatura desterritorializada y la literatura del exilio, así como aportar precisiones sobre las posibilidades de análisis retórico de esta noción y sus conexiones con una teoría de inmediata relación con los esquemas presentados por la literatura ectópica, como es la Teoría de los Polisistemas en su análisis de la literatura traducida.Ectopic literature has been proved to be an enormously useful tool when it comes to analyse literature written by authors which write out of their place of origin and also to translate these texts. In this essay we will deal with ectopic literature from the point of view of Translation and in close relation to other notions like intercultural literature, deterritorialized literature and literature of exile. The possibilities of analysing ectopic literature in translation from the point of view of Rhetorics are also dealt with. Furthermore, ectopic literature relates to translated literature within the frame of the Polysystems Theory, since both of them take into account texts in movement between two or more systems
Curating soya. Trying, testing and tasting (for) a sustainable museum
No full textThe Volkskundemuseum Vienna has been subject to large conceptual changes and now focuses on its social role and contribution to an inclusive and democratic society. The soya project came to the museum coincidentally when a hidden historical conjuncture was revealed and offered an intriguing way to include the topic of climate change into the museum’s agenda. The analogue and digital interactive formats in the soya project deal with the global contexts of climate change by analysing the social, economic and cultural role of the soya bean in our everyday lives. “Is there any sugar in bread?” A qualitative video analysis of student activating learning tasks in Home Economics
No full textThe Norwegian Food and Health (FH) school subject aims to develop students' ability to understand the association between diet and health. Research on FH in Norway indicates that the main focus today is on cooking and the development of practical cooking skills, leaving little emphasis on activities related to the more theoretical aspects of the curriculum. To increase students’ knowledge and skills regarding nutrition and health, we aimed to evaluate three newly developed student-activating learning tasks. Three 6th grade FH classes in Southern Norway participated. Audio and video recording of the learning tasks were used to evaluate the activities. Also, data from focus group discussions with FH teachers and students, which were conducted afterwards, was included in the analysis. By emphasising sociocultural learning and using the skills highlighted as essential in social learning and development as basis for the activities, we found the activities valuable in working with FH. The students’ learning process was stimulated while they engaged with the learning tasks by working in groups, by being active in interaction, dialogue, communication and collaboration, and by being given the opportunity to listen and argue. Language was used as a pedagogical tool and was central in the students’ learning process. Both the students and their teachers valued the active and practical outline of the learning tasks. We propose a stronger emphasis on practical learning tasks in FH, to strengthen the students’ social learning and thus the learning in the subject, by using this as a pedagogical approach in FH classrooms.

«Er det sukker i brød?»: En kvalitativ videoanalyse av elevaktive læringsaktiviteter i Mat og Helse
Sammendrag
Mat og Helse (MH) i skolen har som mål å utvikle elevenes evne til å forstå sammenhengen mellom kosthold og helse. Forskning på MH i Norge indikerer at hovedfokuset i dag er på matlaging og utvikling av praktiske matlagingsferdigheter, med mindre fokus på aktiviteter som retter seg mot det mer teoretiske innholdet i læreplanen. For å øke elevenes kunnskaper og ferdigheter relatert til ernæring og helse, ønsket vi å evaluere tre nyutviklede elevaktive læringsaktiviteter utviklet spesielt til MH-faget. Tre 6. klasser i Sør-Norge var med på utprøvingen av aktivitetene, og lyd- og videoopptak ble brukt til å evaluere aktivitetene. I tillegg ble data fra fokusgruppeintervjuer med MH-lærere og elever, som ble gjennomført i etterkant, inkludert i analysen. Aktivitetene viste seg å være nyttige i arbeidet med MH, ved å legge vekt på sosiokulturell læring og bruke ferdighetene som er trukket fram som essensielle i sosial læring og utvikling, som grunnlag for aktivitetene. Ved å tilrettelegge for at elevene kan jobbe i grupper og ved å oppfordre til interaksjon og dialog, kommunikasjon og samarbeid, og til å lytte og argumentere, ble deres læringsprosess stimulert i arbeidet med oppgavene. I et sosiokulturelt perspektiv er det nærliggende å anta at dette virker positivt på elevenes læringsprosess, siden språket er et sentralt pedagogisk verktøy. Under fokusgruppeintervjuene kom det fram at både elevene og lærerne verdsatte at aktivitetene var elevaktive og praktiske. Basert på dette foreslår vi et større fokus på praktiske læringsaktiviteter i MH for å styrke elevenes sosiale læring, og dermed læring i faget, ved bruke dette som en pedagogisk tilnærming.
