    No full text
Digital, written interaction has become an extensive practice in modern society, also between citizens and public service providers. In NAV (the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration), interaction between counsellors and service users is increasingly taking place in written form on a digital platform. In this article, we study sequences of written interaction in which service users present complaints towards the counsellor or NAV. With a discourse analytical approach, we study how counsellors meet such complaints and the rhetorical resources they employ in their written responses. The analyses show that the responses are selective and that they acknowledge, avoid, or reject the complaints in an indirect manner, often without explicitly addressing the grievances presented in the complaint. Through rhetorical strategies such as conversationalisation, character work and shifts between personal, professional and institutional voices, the counsellors set boundaries for their involvement and place responsibility for future action on the service user. This can be seen as an expression of the conflicting perspectives of the participants, but also the challenges inherent in the digital format of counselling. There is a risk in such selective responses that topics that are important to the service users might escape attention and be backgrounded in a dialogue that also functions as documentation.

At Trapholt, Museum of Modern Art and Design in Kolding, Denmark, research focus and museum activities – as at many other museums – are largely aimed at the audience and the public. This has led to a collecting practice predominantly driven by Trapholt’s exhibitions. The focus of this article is to study the gains and consequences of an exhibition-driven collecting practice, and discuss the potential opportunities for a strategy going forward. Through three exhibition cases, it is pointed out how this practice has secured a unique selection of historical design objects, as well as examples of contemporary design, but also caused overrepresentation, duplicates and accumulations of certain period pieces, without sufficient or significant documentation. At the same time, this practice is at the expense of research in the remaining collection. This article argues for a greater degree of systematization, broader documentation as well as a structural change to the collection practice involving participation. At Trapholt, Museum of Modern Art and Design in Kolding, Denmark, research focus and museum activities – as at many other museums – are largely aimed at the audience and the public. ‘Sted’ som utgangspunkt for kritisk tenkning i geografi

Geography was previously one of three subfields in the Norwegian primary and lower secondary school’s social studies curriculum. In the new curriculum from 2020, Geography as a subject has become less clear. At the same time, the new curriculum may provide new opportunities to develop students’ geoliteracy. Geoliteracy means being able to read and understand geographical texts and have knowledge of location, places, and interconnections. Furthermore, it means the ability to use geographical thinking to assess different alternatives for actions and make decisions. There are few empirical studies on geography teaching at primary school level, and international research has been particularly concerned with multimodal texts and graphic representations. The critical aspect of geoliteracy in a broad sense, and the role of places in this regard, has received less attention. This article discusses the following research question: How can different approaches to place develop students’ geoliteracy and critical thinking? This article is based on a qualitative classroom study in fifth grade during lessons about Norwegian counties. The analysis shows that the teaching assignments facilitated students’ geoliteracy while reading and constructing maps and finding information about places on the web. Most of the assignments had a descriptive approach to place, but the analysis also reveals potential for critical thinking in some assignments and in spontaneous situations that occurred in the classroom. The article argues that a multidimensional approach to place can provide a geographical perspective to teaching and learning under the new curriculum, as well as contribute to students’ critical thinking.

Intensifiers are described in several recent articles as unstable vocabulary elements. This article presents an investigation of intensifiers of adjectives in four Norwegian corpora of speech language and two of written language, which shows that some intensifiers are rapidly increasing in use and others declining. An adjectival intensifier does strengthen or underline the meaning of the adjective, but is also an important mean to show the speaker’s opinions or attitude to what is described. The investigation shows to which degree the use of such intensifiers is changed in modern Norwegian spoken language according to some social variables, and gives a brief discussion of whether changes in use results in grammaticalization of the most frequent intensifiers or just show changes in lexical popularity.

In this article we show how the search interface Glossa has been developed in step with the various corpora that have been built at the Text Laboratory. Furthermore, we present statistics on what kind of searches people do – single words or longer phrases, with or without specifications for phonetic form or grammatical features etc. – focusing on the Nordic Dialect Corpus and the Corpus of American Nordic Speech. Finally, we demonstrate how researchers have searched for data in these corpora and used them in published articles – both simple and extended search, in smaller or larger language areas – within several different branches of linguistics.

Resilient grammars: On VO/OV in Germanic linguistic islands in Northern Italy

    No full text
In this work we consider some residual cases of OV order in Cimbrian and show that this is due to the interaction between verb movement, a language specific property, and the syntax of bare quantifiers. This has consequences on a general theory on the change of the basic word order, since it shows that the passage from OV to VO can involve different structures in different languages depending on other properties, hence it is not possible to trace a common path in the diachronic change for all languages that have undergone this mutation

Work pressure and job dissatisfaction: Challenges in Danish general practice

    No full text
A main objective of the Nordic healthcare systems is to deliver timely and equal access to high-quality healthcare to the entire population. Health care providers, such as general practitioners (GPs), may therefore experience pressure to deliver care from both the health authorities and patients. However, if GPs’ gains do not outweigh their costs of providing the demanded care, it may lead to job dissatisfaction and thereby potentially to poorer quality of care. This study contributes to the literature by estimating the association between different sources of experienced work pressure and job dissatisfaction among GPs. We use data from a nation-wide survey of Danish GPs distributed in 2019. The study includes six items covering GPs’ experienced work pressure, which we categorise based on the degree to which they are related to demands from either patients or health authorities. Using a series of ordered logit models with a rich set of explanatory variables, we estimate the association between the pressure measures and GP job dissatisfaction. We find that GPs reporting high or considerable work pressure have an increased likelihood of also reporting job dissatisfaction. However, we find considerable heterogeneity in this relationship across different sources of work pressure as well as across GP, practice, and area characteristics. For example, the relationship between pressure from patients’ demands for consultations and job dissatisfaction is stronger among GPs practicing in areas with an undersupply of GPs. Solo practitioners, who cannot share their administrative burdens with colleagues, experience a stronger association between pressure from the health authorities and job dissatisfaction. Policymakers should consider this heterogeneity when implementing new schemes and organisational structures affecting GPs’ work pressure. Published: Online January 2022
