Communities of disagreement in the museums

    No full text
The efforts for diversity and inclusion in museums during the last decades have revealed a need for knowledge and competence on how to handle disagreement and opposition. This paper shows how Lars Laird Iversen’s term communities of disagreement can be applied in museums, and examines his claim that disagreement, under given circumstances, can have a unifying effect. The study is based on discussions from a project where a network of eleven Norwegian museums participated, and on the author’s own attempts to implement communities of disagreement at his own workplace. Iversen’s model has proved useful but requires conscious adaptions that correspond to the complexity of the interface between the museum and the audience. The efforts for diversity and inclusion in museums during the last decades have revealed a need for knowledge and competence on how to handle disagreement and opposition. Memory and nation in Episodios de una guerra interminable by Almudena Grandes

    No full text
Taking into account that Almudena Grandes is a well-known and recognized author with plenty of authority, it is obvious that her series Episodios de una guerra interminable occupies a central position in the struggle about the memory of the 20th century in Spain nowadays. The choice of the 19th century realistic novel as a genre —halfway between history and literature— as well as the narrative mechanisms constitute strategies of the author to legitimize the (re)vision of the past inherent to these novels. A transnational reconstruction if we take into account that the Episodios emphasize the continuity between the violence generated by the fascist regimes in Europe and the dictatorships in South America in the 70s. These novels articulate a specific view of the past which includes a particular concept of Spain, progress, politics and historical change. Grandes reinforces her personal interpretation of the past events thanks to intense activity in the public sphere, especially as a publicist, from a visible political position that also impregnates her literary work. &nbsp

    No full text
The essay that is presented is part of the research on the creative process of Parrao1 based on the works The kitsch(en) and the X (egg's), presented in 2001 and The Pizarnik extraction of madness (fragments to dominate silence) 2004. In the approach it is intended to explore the rhetoric and the symbols that are re-created from an urban imaginary, because in the process of creativity, coexistence and shared spaces and times are chosen as ways of living and seeing the world in which it lives. It is involved as an experiential entity, as a walking subject, imbued in and of its environment. What is shown here are some notions that are being worked on. The lack of space prevents me from expanding, however, the panorama that is offered here allows us to observe the ways in which the approach to this fascinating and enigmatic cultural phenomenon is taking place

Reflecting on Boundary Crossings between Knowledge and Values:: A Place for Multimodal Objects in Biology Didactics?

    No full text
Through a series of practice-based narratives, drawn from specific experiences in a higher-education context in Sweden, the affordances of multimodal objects are reflected upon. In this work, multimodal objects are considered as boundary objects that can facilitate learning conversations, both cognitive and affective. Current work in science education research has highlighted the role that boundary-crossings between knowledge and values offer teaching and learning. The author believes such boundary-crossings to be essential in the current context of prolific species extinction, on a planet in which human-made materials now outweigh the living biomass; a planet in which life, death, self and other are ‘braided vulnerabilities’ across a complex socio-biological landscape. Thus, in these iterative, practice-based reflections on specific teaching moments, this paper offers small steps towards reimagining biology didactics in the ‘post-normal’ conditions of the 21st century. In so doing, possibilities for multimodal objects in contemporary biology didactics are reflected upon and suggested

CLARA Review: Camilla Asplund Ingemark & Dominic Ingemark, 2020: Representations of Fear. Verbalising Emotion in Ancient Roman Folk Narrative (Folklore Fellows’ Communications, 320). Helsinki: Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. 362 pages.

    No full text
Good stories were part of the ancient world just as they are today. We find them occasionally transmitted in the extant sources from Classical Greece and Rome, but too seldom are they the subject of scholarly study. The book by Asplund Ingemark and Ingemark is an in-depth study of a limited number of key texts chosen on the basis of their oral origin, as well as their focus on fear. It analyses the function of these stories using an interdisciplinary approach

    No full text
The aim of Norway’s reformed teacher education programme is to educate research-literate teachers who are able to integrate research-based knowledge into classroom experiences. Based on this, the aim of the present study was to gain deeper insight into student teachers’ experiences of working on their research and development (R&D) assignments in order to obtain a better understanding of the process from their perspective. More specifically, their experiences of working on the R&D assignments before, during and after the writing process were investigated through essays. Data were collected from 59 informants from two teacher education institutions, and 137 essays were analysed in line with a thematic analytical approach. The student teachers’ experiences of working on the R&D assignments were related to two themes: a positive and challenging process, and research and teacher relevance. In line with these themes, the R&D assignments should be organised so as to provide enough support for student teachers alongside the appropriate tools for managing the research task. Furthermore, R&D assignments within teacher education can be seen as a route towards connecting research and practice and further developing research-literate teachers.

Revisiting the status of labialised consonants in contemporary Amharic

    No full text
Though a lot of studies have been conducted on Amharic, studies on its phonology are very few and even those studies do not agree on the number and inventory of Amharic consonant phonemes. This study argues that there are 19 labialised Amharic phonemes. The study argues that overgeneralization of labialisation and loss of /w/ cannot account for all the occurrences of labialised consonants in Amharic. Minimal pair test and derivation of agentive and adjutative forms are presented as evidences to show the phonemic status of labialised consonants in Amharic

Embedded imperatives in Semitic, Germanic, and other languages

    No full text
Several Semitic and Germanic languages, just as languages belonging to other language families (Slovenian, Korean), embed imperatives and thus use direct speech in syntactical context, where most other languages would use subordinate clauses. This kind of embedding can entail “shifting indexicals” and “imposters”, i.e. the reference to one and the same person with different persons in the verbal and pronominal system, even within one and the same phrase. In this paper, departing from the Germanic and other data presented so far in this context, I attempt a descriptive analysis of this phenomenon focusing on Semitic, with only hints to elements of a formal analysis

“One, Two, Many = One too many?” Conceptualizations of mother tongue

    No full text
In this article, we analyze the use of the term ‘morsmål’ (‘mother tongue’) in official Norwegian documents and in media texts to identify if and how its conceptualization has changed in the era of increasing globalization. Our point of view is explorative. When examining our data, we highlight the importance of reflecting openly about the instability of powerful concepts. We highlight two partly conflicting conceptualizations that we name the ‘traditional use’ and the ‘novel use’, respectively. Building on critical discourse analysis and conceptual metaphor theory we explore how the conceptualizations reveal certain aspects of ideologies and the potential management of multilingualism in society. A broader understanding of how conceptualizations of mother tongue(s) are played out in the Norwegian context may contribute to the dialogue about multilingualism as it is understood and recognized across diverse contexts

Stable and vulnerable domains in Germanic heritage languages

    No full text
This paper provides an overview of Germanic languages as heritage languages, i.e. languages acquired naturalistically by children in parts of the world where these languages are not the majority language. Summarizing research on different types of heritage speakers of Danish, German, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish, we identify certain stable and vulnerable domains. We focus on the so far best studied areas, word order and grammatical gender, adding evidence from other lesser studied domains, such as definiteness and phonology. We propose that in addition to the linguistic make-up of the phenomena in question, the size of the heritage community and, relatedly, opportunities to use the language need to be taken into account. The latter may explain, for example, why moribund varieties of German and the Scandinavian languages in North America appear to be less stable than the language of second-generation heritage speakers in Europe
