Sandurot festival as \u3ci\u3emugna\u3c/i\u3e : exploring modernity and belonging through the civic festival

    Get PDF
Focusing on the Sandurot Festival organized by the City of Dumaguete in the Philippines, my study explores the process of embodying local identity as site to actualize modernity. To highlight this collaborative, creative, and often contentious process, I put forward the concept of mugna (a Cebuano word which means to create) to examine how social actors (such as festival organizers, cultural workers, and artists) configure nodes of belonging to the time and space of the city by engaging with notions of tradition, authenticity, progress, and development. As Cultural Studies stresses the significance of radical contextuality, I examine in this project the problem-spaces of modernity and belonging to investigate how they constitute the conjuncture wherein the performance practice of the civic festival emerges as mugna. In this light, I adapt Diana Taylor’s performance paradigm to approach the festival as a scenario in interrogating how and why local identity is performed. With this approach, I historicize the festival by examining its situatedness within nation-building and city-making policies and institutional directions (discussed mainly in Chapters One and Two). I further probe its embodied practice by analyzing the repeated but reconfigured corporeal forms and exploring the involvement of social actors in the corporeal practices of festivity (examined closely in Chapters Three, Four, and Five). Borrowing from the insights of performance studies and critical ethnography, I aim to show that through this process of mugna, the festival unfolds in a scenario of rediscovery where social actors playfully embody and reinvent the ‘folk’ and the past through networks of creative collaboration to transmit knowledge about Dumaguete. Thus, the festival as mugna, is produced by and produces attachment to the locality through various social actors’ embodiment of their ‘modern desire’ for the city life, in the process that invokes their local identity and associated civic claims to urban space. I conclude that the festival as mugna enhances our understanding on the configurations of modernity, with how social actors fulfill their individual and collective aspirations for the city and their practices of belonging in it, by determining how the city is remembered, lived, and aspired through the Sandurot Festival

Sankofa : a deeper personal understanding of Sino-African relations

    No full text
The present relationship between China and Africa is embedded in a past, and especially in the period of decolonisation since the First World War. This presentation seeks to explain that this relationship has occurred in multiple layers and spaces that have led to the present China-Africa political and/or economic space. This historically dialogue has been largely forgotten or ignored by major global powers and publics, but not by Africans. In the spirit of looking back to understand the present (i.e., Sankofa), before addressing the possibilities for the future. This presentation is based on a MRes on the African presence in Southeast Asia 1900-1960 that highlights Asian influences in African decolonisation and nationalist movements with a focus on Mozambique and Angola

Erya is not only one of the Thirteen Classics, but also the originator of exegesis and the prototype of a cultural encyclopedia. There are many ways of research, and the discussion of cultural studies is a relatively new topic in modern and contemporary times. This thesis upholds the cultural awareness and uses the method of cultural integration to analyze the cultural connotation and cultural significance of Shitian . The first section introduces Erya·Shutian, and cultural studies and reviews the research results. The second section is divided into five items: astronomy, calendar, climate, disaster and auspiciousness, and etiquette. The third section is divided into four aspects: the cosmology view of the integration of astronomy and calendar, the climate view of good weather, the social view of coexistence of reality and the virtual, and the political and religious view of the unity of man and nature. The last section is the conclusion. It is hoped that this research can give a new look to the classics and open a new chapter for the discussion of “Shitian”

    「強強互攻」設定下中國網絡耽美小説中的性別形象與關係想像——以巫哲《三伏》為例

    Get PDF

Personal life security, nonmonetary benefits and executive compensation : evidence from stand your ground laws

    Get PDF
People prefer an amenable location and companies have to pay a higher level of salary to their executives in a less livable place. Focusing on a particular aspect of livability, i.e. life security, we investigate whether life security condition in a region has an impact on CEOs’ compensation using the enactment of Stand Your Ground (SYG) laws in U.S. 26 states from 2003 to 2020 as an exogenous shock. SYG laws, which grant individuals the legal right to use lethal force in self-defense without the duty to retreat, have the potential to affect executives\u27 perception of personal security and consequently, their compensation preferences. Building on a difference-in-difference approach, we find that the overall executive compensation package tends to increase following the enactment of SYG laws. On average, the passage of the SYG Laws increases total CEO compensation in firms headquartered in states adopting the laws by 3.2% relative to the increase of compensation in firms headquartered in states without adopting the laws. The results are more pronounced when firms face tougher competitiveness for talents and CEOs who have shorter tenure extract higher total pay and equity-based pay after the passage of the SYG Laws. In addition, we find that the results concentrate on regions with high crime rate, poor protective services, and high firearm ownership. This suggests that the adoption of such laws leads to a heightened concern for personal security among executives, prompting them to negotiate for additional benefits. This finding highlights the importance of personal life security in shaping executive compensation preferences

Uncover the underground : distribution and population status of blind snakes and Bogadek’s burrowing lizards

Globally, 28% of the reptiles are fossorial. Fossorial reptiles, which perform important ecological functions, such as being ecosystem engineers, top predators and bioindicators, are indispensable members of the soil ecosystem. However, the ecology of fossorial reptiles is relatively little known because of their cryptic behavior and rarity. In Hong Kong, there are four species of fossorial reptile, three of which are rare and of potential conservation concern. Among the four fossorial reptile species that occur in Hong Kong, Indotyphlops lazelli and Dibamus bogadeki, are endemic to Hong Kong and are globally threatened species. On the other hand, the distribution of Indotyphlops albiceps is disjunct with no record between Myanmar and Hong Kong, necessitating a study to clarify the taxonomy status of different populations. Besides anecdotal sighting records, no systematic ecological studies have been conducted on fossorial reptiles—basic information, including distribution, population status and basic ecology, is largely lacking. In view of the conservation concern of fossorial reptiles, existence of knowledge gap and potential threats, a study on the distribution and population status of local fossorial reptiles is essential. In this study, firstly, systematic field surveys using three sampling techniques (quadrat search, artificial refuges and opportunistic search) were conducted in four sites (Pok Fu Lam, Lung Fu Shan, Lady Clementi’s Ride and Sunshine Island) to evaluate the effectiveness of sampling methods for detecting fossorial reptiles. Only Indotyphlops braminus and I. albiceps were detected in the field surveys. I found that artificial refuge is suitable for longer-term study with sufficient manpower, while active search is cost-effective method for detection of fossorial reptiles and suitable for both long-term and short-term studies. The encounter correlates significantly with a set of environmental factors, including ambient humidity, gradient and canopy cover. Secondly, phylogenetic analysis was carried out to clarify the taxonomic status and phylogenetic relationship among the three target blind snake species. My results consolidated that I. lazelli is a genetically valid species, and suggested that I. albiceps is a potential new species. This study provides insights into optimising surveys on fossorial reptiles in ecological impact assessment and ecological studies, advices to inform conservation actions for the threatened species (including D. bogadeki and I. lazelli), and suggestions on further studies to fill the vast knowledge gaps of the ecology of fossorial reptiles
