    Get PDF
The term “yun” originally referred to the harmony of sounds. During the Wei and Jin periods, it evolved into an inclusive term for evaluating people, paintings, and literary works. It combined with other qualifiers to form composite concepts and gradually became an important category in Chinese literary criticism. Song Dynasty scholars systematically explained “yun” and elevated it to the highest realm of literary art. Fan Wen, in particular, built a relatively complete system of the category of “yun” in his “Qianxi Poetry Eyes” with “yun as the lingering/extra meaning” and “yun as the ultimate beauty” as his core concepts. From the Yuan Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, Wang Shizhen absorbed the poetic resources of his predecessors like Sikong Tu, Yan Yu, Lu Shiyong and others, and held high the banner of “shenyun theory”, which became the most important and influential form of the development of the “yun” category in modern times. The aesthetic ideal pursued by “yun” involves deriving meaning from beyond the explicit words, and it is not only evident in ancient China but is also widely present in other cultural contexts. It can be regarded as a common aesthetic orientation of humanity more generally

    Get PDF

Given the trend of increasing use of information and communication technologies among Chinese elder population, more attention should be drawn on the relationship between social media use and wellbeing of older adults. This research explores the social media use situation among older adults in mainland China as well as its influences on their wellbeing, and employs a mixed approach including quantitative questionnaire distributed via WeChat social media platform and qualitative interview among Chinese older adults who are over 60 years of age in Jingzhou, Hubei Province. Generally speaking, social media use can improve the wellbeing of Chinese older adults, more specifically, WeChat use and Douyin use are associated with better physical situation, lower levels of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and enhanced self-esteem. The findings would contribute to the knowledge of social media use situation among elder Chinese through perspectives like benefits and obstacles, impacts on perceptions of physical health and the psychological health in speaking of aspects like stress, anxiety, depression and self-esteem, and the situation of social media use by Chinese older adults under the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the impacts on them. The results of this research could provide insights for healthcare workers and policy makers in China to build a healthier online social media environment and support the wellbeing of older adults

Understanding the role of central-local government relations in the development of residential land in China : a new institutionalism perspective

    No full text
Background: In China, central-local government relations have attracted considerable attention in political science and public management. However, the current research findings underscore a presidential gap in understanding how these relations affect social policies. With social and economic development, a country\u27s ability to improve land governance depends heavily on how it manages the central-local relationship in land development. This is particularly urgent in transforming land governance in China’s new era. The central government plays a pivotal role in guiding local governments towards achieving land development goals that align with balanced economic development and farmland preservation through incentives and controls, and local governments seek to maximise their self-interest while operating under the oversight of the central government. Despite the valuable insights of previous studies, the understanding of central-local relations given by this perspective is usually fragmented. Therefore, opening this black box is pivotal for presenting a full picture of the residential land development in China. Aims and objectives: Drawing upon theoretical insights from the new institutionalism perspective, this thesis constructs a framework that integrates and synthesises different perspectives into a unified theoretical framework. This thesis aims to understand how these central-local interactions shape residential land development in China from both a government perspective (i.e., local government\u27s land supply behaviour) and a micro-firm perspective (i.e., micro firms\u27 land auction outcomes). Methods: Based on panel data covering 284 prefectural-level cities from 2007 to 2023, this thesis uses a two-way fixed effects model to empirically identify and compare different dimensions of central-local relations (fiscal, administrative and personnel) on local government’s land supply and subsequent impact on land auction outcomes by micro firms. Findings: Empirical results reveal that the central-local fiscal relations (measured by fiscal decentralisation) have positive and significant effects on local governments’ land supply but negative effects on land areas acquired by real estate firms. In addition, we provide empirical evidence that the central-local administrative relations (measured by the textual similarity between central government reports and local government reports) play a significant and negative role in the local government’s land supply and the magnitude of real estate firms’ land auction outcomes. Ultimately, central-local personnel relations, as reflected in official rotation at the city level, are found to negatively impact both local government land supply decisions and real estate firms\u27 land auction outcomes. Implication: The study confirms the hypothesis that central-local relations play a critical role in developing residential land in China. This study is not only a unique exploration of a conceptual framework that captures the role of central-local relations on residential land development but also derives practical implications for the future reform of China’s urban land system and institutions. The study also reflects on implications for theory, future research, and policy

    Get PDF
Dai Zhen’s studies on Shangshu (Book of Documents) lasted throughout his scholarship. His earlier works (before 1757, the 22nd year of Qianlong’s reign) include Shangshu jinwen guwen kao (On the Old Text and the New Text of the Book of Documents) and Jing kao (Examinations of the Classics). Shangshu yikao (Explanation of the Meanings of the Book of Documents) is the representative work of his later scholarship (after 1757, the 22nd year of Qianlong’s reign). He appeared to have written Shangshu yikao no earlier than the winter of 1762 (the 27th year of Qianlong’s reign). Shangshu jinwen guwen kao concisely outlines old and new sources of Han-dynasty Shangshu. Although Shangshu yikao had not been compiled into a volume during his lifetime, his citations therein are rigorous and well-respected. Dai Zhen’s scholarship followed this path: to understand characters through the sound; to pursue exegesis through characters; to grasp the system of codes and rules of governance through exegesis; to arrive at principles of things by examining codes and rules of governance) and observes the principle of yi ci tong dao (to pursue the way through words)

    Get PDF
This article proposes a new typology of the sanqu corpus. The discussion analyzes a cross section of sanqu songs in terms of how they engaged with language registers, on the one hand, and how they recontextualized existing motifs and media, on the other. Specifically, the article focuses on three subsets of songs: songs that foreground everyday vignettes, songs that celebrate festive occasions at court, and songs that revisit the exemplars of Chinese literature, history, and religion. The article suggests that everyday songs and court-oriented songs prized the aesthetic of immediacy, while certain mixed-register songs more explicitly exhibited differently oriented signs of hypermediacy

Challenges and responses : the impact of classification methods of policies on first-generation college students in China and the US

    Get PDF
In China and the United States, with the expansion of higher education, more and more people have become the first-generation of college students in their families. However, while gaining opportunities for social upward mobility, they also face many challenges, and the formation of these challenges is related to their multiple identities. In China, these challenges are more related to regional development differences, while in the United States, they are more impacted by identities such as immigrants and ethnic minorities. At the same time, the governments, universities, and society of both countries have introduced various policies to support first-generation college students, typical formats of which include admission preference, financial support, and intervention program. These policies have different audiences’ classification methods. In China, most of them are classified based on income levels, regional conditions, and ethnic identities. However, in the United States, many policies are specifically conducted for the first-generation college students. Combining primary and secondary data, this study will conduct a thematic analysis on the challenges of first-generation college students in China and the United States as well as the response effects of relevant policies. Through the comparison between the two cases, implications for policy classification methods will also be proposed
