    No full text
Within the expansion of higher education in China, education quality should be considered into the process of reform and establishment, which is highly related to the resources of faculty and performances of management. It is crucial that universities sustainably conduct diverse academic research and meet the needs of community. Faced with the policy reform and opening up, China has more opportunities on cooperating with oversea education institutions and taking in overseas management system. This research explores the general quality assessment on higher education and the solution to balance the needs of domestic society and the growth of international education competitiveness, in order to provide supportive instruments to government on placing educational policy and managers in higher education on leading the development with competitive quality. Existing scholarship reveals that the expansion of higher education cannot effectively hedge the rapid growth of student number and solve the inequalities of educational opportunities. Moreover, the quality of higher education still has many puzzles in the following development which should cover domestic regulations on the process from quantitative improvement to qualitative improvement, while discussion on quality eager to concentrate on the relationship between government and society with co-existence of different approaches of promotion. This thesis is conducted by qualitative analysis, adhering with the finding information from semi-structured interviews. Interviewees are selected from Shenzhen University and Shenzhen Education Bureau by snowball collection, which is designed to comprehensively reflect the thinking on higher education expansion from the front line of teaching and management. Based on the suggestions from interview participants, government should keep a main perspective in the development of higher education in China and maintain a close cooperation with overseas institutions to help graduates develop individual competencies within the international competitiveness

The post-COVID-19 pandemic study abroad intentions of Chinese undergraduate students : a case study of Shenzhen

China has the largest potential outward international student population of any country in the world. However, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic impeded the international mobility of Chinese students. In 2023, China’s government lifted the restrictions that had been put in place to control the pandemic. Consequently, it is imperative to understand the aspirations of students regarding studying abroad in the post-pandemic era. This study explored changes in the motivations and intentions of Shenzhen undergraduates regarding studying abroad. A qualitative research methodology was adopted for this study. This research lies in its use of in-depth interviews with Shenzhen undergraduates with different academic backgrounds. Specifically, the push–pull framework was used to conduct an in-depth exploration of the willingness of third-year undergraduates at Shenzhen universities to study abroad at postgraduate level in the post-pandemic period and the push–pull factors influencing their intentions. The universities were categorised into three academic levels: Project 985 institutions, Tier 1 institutions, and other (“ordinary”) institutions. The 52 student participants were recruited from five academic disciplines: chemistry, materials, economics, social science, and clinical medicine. The study revealed that in all disciplines, the willingness of the Project 985 university undergraduates to study abroad exceeded that of those studying at the Tier 1 and ordinary universities. At all three levels of universities, the undergraduates majoring in economics and chemistry had the highest willingness to study abroad and those majoring in materials had the lowest willingness to study abroad. The study found that, the Chinese government’s policies on “anti-corruption in medicine” and “anti-corruption in finance” have increased the willingness of economics, chemistry and clinical medicine students from Project 985 and the Tier 1 university to study abroad. Employment prospects, academic quality of China’s postgraduate schools, and parental support were common factors determining willingness to study abroad for undergraduates across the three levels of universities. It was also revealed that the United States was the country to which the Project 985 and Tier 1 undergraduates were most interested in going abroad to study. Academic quality, employment opportunities, campus environment in the United States were cited as pull factors. The United Kingdom was the study abroad country of choice for the undergraduates at the ordinary university. Academic quality, postgraduate course reputation and recognition, duration of programmes and cultural experiences in the United Kingdom were cited as pull factors. This study suggests that the Chinese government\u27s anti-corruption policies in finance and medicine have fuelled the intentions of China\u27s key universities clinical medicine, chemistry, and finance students to study abroad and work in foreign countries. Therefore, there is a need for the Chinese government to consider the impact on graduate students in this field when implementing policies that have a significant impact on the industry

Qualification mismatch and labour market outcomes : evidence from empirical study in mainland China

    No full text
The development of education and the enhancement of employment quality are crucial to national economic growth and social stability. While the expansion of education in China has raised the educational level of workers, the problem of overeducation has also become more and more prominent. It has become an essential factor that hinders workers\u27 high-quality employment. This study defines the connotation of overeducation from the micro level. It measures the employment quality of workers from four dimensions: objective wage income, occupational mobility, and subjective job satisfaction and turnover intention, based on the principle of combining subjectivity and objectivity in the construction of indicators. A theoretical analysis framework of overeducation\u27s impact on workers\u27 employment quality is constructed from a multidisciplinary perspective. Finally, a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods is used, taking into account the current situation of overeducation and the characteristics of labour market development in mainland China. Using micro-data from the China Family Panel Survey (CFPS) and the China General Social Survey (CGSS), as well as in-depth interviews with employees and employers, the impact of overeducation on employment quality and its mechanism of action were empirically examined and explored. The main research findings are as follows: Both theoretical analyses and quantitative empirical tests show that overeducation reduces workers\u27 wage income and job satisfaction, increases their propensity to leave, and does not contribute to upward occupational mobility. These are contrary to the connotations of high employment quality, implying that overeducation generally reduces the employment quality at the same level of education. Employee and employer choices about the job-education mismatch have important implications for employment quality, with graduates who are passively resigned to their current jobs and wish to change their disadvantaged position through overeducation likely to be discouraged. Moreover, employers responding to the trend of educational expansion by recruiting overeducated employees do not fully use excess human capital. China\u27s traditional utilitarian values of learning and entrenched views of employment make it impossible to meet key career expectations, and the employment quality for overeducated workers will decline. Education-job matches, key career expectations and employment quality constantly change at different career development and life course stages. Employers are well aware of the overeducation problem they now face. However, they still believe that the mechanics of internal labour markets kicked in based on merit-based performance rather than qualification and that managing the career aspirations of graduates is a big challenge. The present research makes up for the weak research on overeducation in China and opens the black box of the relationship between overeducation and employment quality. In reality, it can also provide a policy basis for the Chinese government to guide schools to deepen their reforms, enterprises to optimise human capital allocation, and individuals to invest rationally in education and choose employment
