Implementing inclusive education policy within higher education : an ecological case study on support networks for students with disability in Chinese local college

    No full text
This study investigates the support networks for disability groups that have developed within higher education (HE) with the implementation of inclusive education (IE) policies. While international society advocates inclusivity in HE through policies such as the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and China has continuously strengthened legal protections around the right to education of individuals with disabilities, significant gaps persist in IE practices at the HE level. Past IE research has primarily focused on early and basic education, with relatively scant in-depth exploration, especially empirical exploration, of the HE phase, particularly in the Chinese context. Employing a case study approach combined with bibliometrics and in-depth interviews, this research analyzes the academic support networks for IE in the global and Chinese HE fields, as well as the internal support networks for IE policy implementation within a local Chinese university. In particular, it emphasizes the roles and interactions within the actor network in IE practices, alongside reevaluating the understanding and implementation of the concept of disability. Utilizing Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory as a conceptual framework, the study zeroes in on the IE support networks within HE, focusing on the support for students with disabilities and examining IE practices from a social justice perspective. The findings indicate that despite some advancements in global and Chinese academic networks’ support of HE for people with disabilities, regional concentration and disparities exist, marginalizing China. In China, despite policy-level backing, issues such as inequitable resource allocation, the burden and responsibilities placed on teachers, and the communication challenges faced by students, remain major obstacles to IE policy implementation. The study argues that more localized and internationally informed IE practices rooted in the Chinese context are essential within HE support networks. Moreover, the study reveals that the deeper one’s understanding of disability, the more proactive one is in engaging with support networks and the more adept one becomes at identifying shortcomings in current policies. This study not only furnishes policymakers with valuable insights but also directs educators and researchers toward more diversified research, contributing to the promotion of educational equity and social integration for persons with disabilities

    Get PDF

Stock liquidity and value relevance of earnings : evidence from a natural experiment

    Get PDF
This thesis explores the effect of stock liquidity on the value relevance of earnings, employing the Securities and Exchange Commission\u27s 2016 Tick Size Pilot Program (TSP) as a natural experiment to investigate this relationship. This study leverages the exogenous shock to stock liquidity induced by the program to address endogeneity issues that have historically complicated the analysis of stock market dynamics. By examining the causal effects of increased liquidity on the market\u27s response to earnings announcements, the research provides new insights into how liquidity impacts the usefulness and reliability of accounting information from the shareholders\u27 perspective. The findings indicate that stock liquidity positively and significantly affects the value relevance of earnings, suggesting that more liquid markets may improve the efficiency of capital allocation and investor decision-making. However, while intended to increase liquidity, the TSP inadvertently reduced it in treatment firms, diminishing the value relevance of earnings within these groups. The study further analyses the role of institutional investors, revealing that reduced liquidity discourages both transient and non-transient institutional investor participation, which in turn lowers relevance to earnings value. The study employs several robustness checks to establish causality. These results have important implications for regulators and standard setters, highlighting the potential consequences of liquidity adjustments for financial statement utility in equity valuation. Moreover, this thesis contributes to the academic discourse by filling a gap in the existing literature and providing empirical evidence on the direct relationship between stock liquidity and value relevance. This insight informs future policy decisions and helps market participants better understand the integral role of liquidity in the valuation of firms and the strategic management of accounting information

Deconstructing ageism and quality of life among older informal workers : a mixed-methods study in Ghana

    No full text
Despite growing research on ageism and the aging workforce, few studies have examined the perspectives and experiences of older workers in the informal economy. Also, while research has acknowledged common pathways linking ageism to relevant outcomes across older individuals, the contextual nuances within these intersections, particularly for informal sector workers in less developed countries, have been overlooked. This knowledge gap limits our understanding of the ageism faced by this population and hinders the development of evidence-based policies to address their needs. To address this gap, this study employs an exploratory sequential mixed-methods approach to investigate the nature and effects of ageism experienced by older informal workers in Kumasi, Ghana - a major hub of informal economic activities in West Africa. Importantly, the study also examines how individual, work-related, and structural factors, such as gender, perceptions of ageing and work, and social support, influence the relationship between ageism and quality of life among this population. The qualitative phase employed a novel photovoice methodology where 30 participants were provided cameras and mobile devices to photographically illustrate their encounters with ageism. This generated photos, interviews, and focus groups discussions, which were analysed using thematic and content analysis techniques. Key findings were organized into contextual dimensions of ageism, societal expectations of age and informal work, and sources of age-related biases. The findings also highlighted how multiple aspects of identity – age, socioeconomic status, and cultural norms of work intersect to shape older informal workers’ experiences of ageism. Subsequently, 683 respondents were surveyed using multi-stage cluster sampling. Results augmented the photovoice study, showing that positive ageism results in higher QoL among older informal workers. However, intricate gendered patterns emerged in relationships between ageism and quality of life (QoL). Stereotypes and discrimination significantly associated with QoL, but stereotypes had greater negative impacts for men while discrimination predominantly affected women, when those positive stereotypes and expectations were unmet. The gendered dimension of ageism also underscored the need to challenge societal norms and cultural attitudes that perpetuate these stereotypes, enabling older informal workers to e recognized, valued, and afforded equal opportunities within the workforce. Additionally, positive self-perception of ageing and access to state support buffered against ageism’s negative QoL effects. However, those lacking resilience and assistance faced health and psychological challenges adjusting to ageist work environments. The results also highlighted the intricate intersectionality of ageism, emphasizing that ageism does not solely originate from individual attitudes or actions. Instead, it emerged from a complex interplay of individual beliefs and behaviours (micro), work-related dynamics and practices (meso), and broader societal influences and systemic structures (macro). The findings offer empirical evidence and guidance, for studies and policy measures aimed at combating age discrimination, against workers in the informal sector. This is crucial to improve the quality of life for workers, in this age group in less developed nations facing a significant increase, in their ageing population

Sino-Africa counterterrorism cooperation : assessing the cases of Nigeria, Kenya and Sudan

    No full text
An evolving trend in Africa’s security sphere is that African states no longer exclusively look to the West who have since the late 20th century been the preferred security partner for most African states in the fight against terrorism, but now also look to the East i.e., China for counterterrorism. This raises the question; Why are African states cooperating with China to combat terrorism and how do external and internal factors influence their decision to do so? The study explores this phenomenon from the African Agency. By using neoclassical realism as its theoretical framework and a qualitative research method, the study looks at Nigeria, Kenya and Sudan as case studies. The core argument presented in this study is that a combination of external and domestic factors plays a role in these three African nations decisions to each cooperate with China to address issues of terrorism in their respective countries. To validate this argument stakeholders from these countries were interviewed to gather insights often overlooked in research focusing mainly on China Africa security dynamics. The results shed light on both converging and differing interests/motives driving Nigeria, Kenya and Sudan’s cooperation with China in the fight against terrorism. These interest/motives include economic advantages, military logistical support, mutual security benefits, diplomatic relations, pragmatic assessment (exclusive to Nigeria), and the transnational threat of terrorism (exclusive to Kenya). Regarding the influence of external factors, the findings reveal the rise of China as a global powerhouse with an interest in Africa’s security. However, the influence of anarchy in the international system is not a given, as perspectives vary. Also, the domestic factors influencing their engagement with China include national interests’ objectives, domestic political constraints, partisan politics (exclusive to Nigeria), leaders’ perceptions of China, and contested notions of shared identity. Empirically, this research contributes to Africa-China security relations by providing African perspectives on counterterrorism cooperation with China, which, to the best of my knowledge, are lacking in both academic and policy research. Theoretically, the study extends neoclassical realism’s reach to developing countries’ foreign policy behaviors. Also, the study emphasizes practical implications that suggest opportunities for improved cooperation between China and Africa in countering terrorism. The study further makes recommendations for future research including the undertaking of a comprehensive multi-method evaluation in these three African states to assess the impact of their counterterrorism cooperation with China, such as whether it is helping to tangibly improve their fights against terrorism or conversely creating new challenges that require academic and policy attention. The express aim of this research s to give voice to African perspectives in the analysis of Africa-China counterterrorism relations, which have been neglected in China-focused security research in Africa

The term contrarianism (fusu 負俗) is Liu Xie\u27s description of Song Yu, and it is also a crucial context for his theory of interpretation through the unity of question and answer. Contrarianism means opposing worldly norms and often facing criticism as a result. Contrarians are often talented scholars who neither pander to popular tastes nor conform to the majority and often achieve exceptional success. Song Yu\u27s contrarianism is not only evident in his personal discordance with societal norms but also manifests in his literary works, which are characterized by innovative dialogic structures, a focus on secular themes, an orientation toward humor and harmony, as well as narrative fictionalization and dramatization. Moreover, the distinct traits of holding talents and defying convention can be seen in the seven forms and linked pearls listed by Liu Xie, and in the writers themselves. According to Liu Xie\u27s thought, contrarianism is a commendable personal and literary quality. The genre of miscellaneous essays represents a comprehensive expression of the literati\u27s talent and defiance of norms, reflecting a playful writing spirit, showcasing emotional and intellectual depth, and demonstrating literary skill. Liu Xie\u27s contrarianism is undoubtedly a foundational concept in understanding the characteristics of miscellaneous essays

    Get PDF
During the Ming dynasty, the study of The Rites of Zhou flourished with numerous scholars and an abundance of works; however, later scholars, including those involved with the compilation of the Complete Library in the Four Branches of Literature, did not place significant emphasis on these studies. For instance, among the works categorized under Rites of Zhou, only three from the Ming authors were included: Ke Shangqian\u27s Complete Explanations of the Rites of Zhou, Wang Yingdian\u27s Commentary on the Rites of Zhou, and Wang Zhichang\u27s Annotated and Abridged Rites of Zhou. The Concise Catalogue of the Complete Library further diminished the Ming dynasty\u27s scholarship on The Rites of Zhou, stating that the three rites had nearly become extinet studies during the Ming dynasty ; thus, they were preserved only for the sake of completeness. This dismissive attitude extended to discussions on the unperished theories of the Winter Officials from the Song to the Ming dynasties. Such perspectives have influenced modern scholarship, with many continuing to adopt the stance of The Concise Catalogue, critiquing Ming dynasty scholarship on these rites and leaving few to explore these works in depth. In response, this paper aims to thoroughly investigate the phenomenon of unperished theories within the Winter Officials section of The Rites of Zhou, tracing the development of these theories from the Song and Yuan through to the mid-Ming dynasty, with a specific focus on He Qiaoxin\u27s contributions in The Collected Annotations on the Rites of Zhou. As it systematically organized and succinctly interpreted the views on restoration from the Song and Yuan dynasties and often used the original texts to elaborate on the greater meanings within The Rites of Zhou, The Collected Annotations garnered significant attention from Ming-dynasty scholars of The Rites of Zhou. Therefore, this paper also discusses the impact of The Collected Annotations on the scholarship of The Rites of Zhou during the Ming dynasty, thus partially addressing gaps in previous research
