La teatralità del campus universitario. Lezioni americane
No full textDirect experience gained in one of the most prestigious scenarios of American academia helps create a typological profile of the campus, a place that produces culture and that, originally, was set against the city according to a principle of anti-urban life. According to the American ideal, nowadays the campus represents a completed city part that wishes to impress the spectator – whether student, city inhabitant or visitor – by heightening emotional effects through its capacity to introject the complex functional programme of the entire urban settlement, and to communicate by means of thespian figures.Un’esperienza diretta svolta su una delle scene più prestigiose dell’accademia americana contribuisce alla restituzione di un profilo tipologico del campus, luogo che produce cultura e che, originariamente, si pone rispetto alla città secondo un principio di anti urbanità. No full textn the 1960s-70s, unrest in universities leads to the spilling out of the academic institution into the city - as is manifested in the student protests. The encounter between university and city is rapidly appropriated by architecture that turns it into one of the most used and abused metaphors to legitimate a sought-after epistemic break from the functionalist dogma. By considering the design and intellectual work done by Shadrach Woods and Giancarlo De Carlo on the changing condition of higher education, this article discusses two approaches to the metaphor university=city. While similar in their intentions – to the point of being grouped under the same label of “mat-building” – they diverge widely in the ways they propose how the architectural project could address such a metaphor. Tra gli anni ’60 e ’70 l’università è attraversata da un clima d’irrequietudine che sfocia nel suo riversamento sulla città attraverso le proteste studentesche. L’incontro tra città e università è fatto propria dalla cultura architettonica e trasformato in una delle più usate e abusate metafore per legittimare un’ipotetica svolta epistemologica dal dogma funzionalista. Considerando il lavoro progettuale e intellettuale di Shadrach Woods e Giancarlo De Carlo sul tema del ripensamento dell’università, questo scritto discute due approcci apparentemente simili nelle intenzioni – al punto di essere raggruppati sotto la stessa etichetta del “mat-building” - ma profondamente differenti nel modo di definire i modi in cui il progetto di architettura possa rispondere alla metafora università=città.

And he does so with the real gusto, stature and lightness of a “true maestro”. The founding of a place and the training of the student become metaphors for one another. “Here is [where] the teaching becomes common work. (...) recognition of the language and a common landscape in the space, but especially over time. Landscapes that understand us and that we must understand.”L’autore indaga tutto il fascino e l'ambiguità del rapporto fragile e complesso tra Maestro e allievo. E lo fa con il gusto, la statura e la leggerezza di un “vero maestro”. Fondazione di un luogo e formazione del discepolo diventano metafore l'una dell'altra. “Ecco che l’insegnamento diventa lavoro comune. (...) riconoscimento di un linguaggio e di un paesaggio comune, nello spazio, ma soprattutto nel tempo. Paesaggi che ci comprendono e che dobbiamo comprendere.

The impossible with all its load of temptations and hopes has been assumed in this article as energy, revitalizing the meanings that promote a good birth for an architectural project. This is the impossible making of images that are capable of reflecting the logical and symbolic dimension of the forms of architecture, mutually boosting them. Impossible research to be reduced to a mere discursive reason for the production of meanings generated by the IT/media world, but necessary to reawaken the constitutive interweaving of an imaginative conception of the architectural project, and constitutive of the soul of reality.La ricerca impossibile in architettura, ovvero l’impossibile come ricerca, l’impossibile con tutto il suo carico di tentazioni e speranze è assunto in questo articolo come energia rivitalizzante i significati che favoriscono una buona nascita del progetto di architettura. Si tratta dell’impossibile fare immagini capaci di riflettere, potenziandoli reciprocamente, dimensione logica e dimensione simbolica delle forme dell’architettura. Ricerca impossibile da ridurre alla sola ragione discorsiva della produzione di significati generati dal mondo dell’informazione informatico/mediatica ma necessaria per risvegliare l’intreccio costitutivo di una concezione immaginativa del progetto di architettura e costitutiva dell’anima della realtà.

No full textSicily and its territory, destination of the Arab travelers and later the Grand Tour travelers between 700 and 800 and the architects of the '20s, always interested in the knowledge of its landscape, has been crossed, in recent years, by the students and teachers who have participated in the numerous workshops and symposia on the knowledge of the places of the town and of the landscape, where were able to present a project of transformation. The workshops, in fact, as we will see through the various experiences in the places, as well as those performed in Sicily as those in the places of Villard, are a different way of teaching through "the travel between the places" and comparing the different Italian and European experiences.La Sicilia e il suo territorio, meta dei viaggiatori arabi e successivamente dei viaggiatori del Grand Tour tra il ‘700 e ‘800 e architetti degli anni ‘20, interessati sempre alla conoscenza del suo paesaggio, è stata attraversata negli ultimi anni, da studenti e docenti, che hanno partecipato ai numerosi workshop e simposi interessati alla conoscenza dei luoghi della città e del paesaggio, dove potere presentare un progetto di trasformazione. No full textThis research start from the hypothesis that the design method, based on the study of urban morphology, can be a guide for urban interventions within the so-called 'informal' fabric. The studies demonstrate that the 'informal' city, the development of which is independent from urban design or legal rules, is closely related to social and economic dynamics. From this point of view the development of the contemporary informal city can be compared with the dynamics of formation and transformation of pre-modern urban fabric, emphasizing the analogy that links the urban transformation to the social needs, own of the surroundings cultural context in which these urban organisms are identified. The recognition of a logical development of these fabrics, becomes the tool that can guide the urban regeneration, respecting the living culture.La ricerca proposta parte dal presupposto che il metodo di progettazione basato sullo studio della morfologia urbana possa costituire una guida per interventi urbani all’interno dei cosiddetti tessuti “informali”. Gli studi condotti dimostrano infatti che il tessuto urbano informale, il cui sviluppo prescinde da pianificazioni o da logiche normative, risulta però strettamente legato a dinamiche sociali ed economiche. Sotto questo punto di vista lo sviluppo della città informale contemporanea può essere messa a confronto con le dinamiche di formazione e trasformazione dei centri urbani pre-moderni, sottolineando la netta analogia che lega le trasformazioni urbane alle necessità e alle dinamiche sociali, proprie dell’intorno culturale in cui tali organismi urbani si identificano.Il riconoscimento di una logica di sviluppo di tali tessuti, diventa lo strumento in grado di guidarne la rigenerazione urbana, rispettandone la cultura abitativa

No full textStanga square and Venice road, in Padova, are the layout of the project that redefines a crossroads star, featuring a place that doesn’t show any architectural quality. The project tries to give shape to this space through architecture, building the theme of the city gate. The project presents a series of autonomous buildings that give life to an urban set articulated in an archipelago of singular points, held together by relations of mutual tension established between the different elements in space.Piazzale Stanga e via Venezia a Padova costituiscono lo scenario del progetto che ridefinisce un crocevia viabilistico a stella, caratterizzante un luogo che non presenta qualità architettoniche di rilievo. Il progetto ha cercato di dare forma a questo spazio attraverso l’architettura, cercando di costruire per frammenti il tema della porta urbana. Il progetto si presenta con una serie di edifici autonomi che danno vita ad un insieme urbano articolato in un arcipelago di punti singolari, tenuti assieme dai rapporti di tensione reciproca che si stabiliscono tra i diversi elementi nello spazio

No full textThe Twentieth century in architecture has experienced many episodes of intense debate. It is the century in which the 'discursive tools" increased through manifestos, essays, journals, schools, exhibitions. Thus, even more than in the previous centuries, the talk around architecture improved, overlapping at the same time the architecture itself with its forms and its construction. The word takes over and it can hide the architectural form to the scholar, unless this one does not use the design as a tool of analysis, true scientific and useful medium to reveal the architectural composition and its syntax, using the «compositive lectures».Il Novecento dell’architettura ha conosciuto numerosi episodi di dibattito intenso. È il secolo nel quale si sono moltiplicati in maniera esponenziale gli «strumenti discorsivi»: i manifesti, i saggi critici, le riviste, le scuole, le mostre. Così, più ancora che nei secoli precedenti, ha preso piede il discorso intorno all’architettura, sovrapponendosi a tratti all’architettura medesima, alle sue forme e alla sua costruzione. La parola, prendendo il sopravvento, può nascondere allo studioso la forma architettonica, a meno che lo studioso medesimo non ricorra al disegno come strumento di analisi, vero apparecchio scientifico utile a disvelare grammatiche e sintassi di composizioni architettoniche attraverso la tecnica della «lettura compositiva»
